December 13, 20231 yr Here’s a harsh truth. It would be a mistake to fire Johnson for another coordinator, because Jalen has only had consecutive seasons with the same coordinator once in his college and professional career. Year one Johnson and Hurts reminds me a lot of year one Steichen and Hurts. The main issues to me right now with this offense is turnovers, red zone efficiency, failure to stay consistent with the run game, and a lack of scheming plays underneath to get the quarterback in rhythm. This defense on the other hand seems to have a lot of problems despite having a ton of players in the secondary they lack depth. No real stud at linebacker. The safeties aren’t good enough. The corners are too old. The DC doesn’t blitz and when he does it lacks any type of imagination. I wonder how much of this stuff is on these coaches and how much of it is just the philosophy of the Eagles. Seems like linebacker has been an issue for the Eagles for year. The last time the Eagles drafted a great safety or linebacker was back in the Rhodes era. Seems like we have been talking about corners and cushions since Schwartz. Still this 3rd and long defense has been brutal. This defense against the two minute offense has been abysmal all season and how in the world do they keep giving up deep passes in the middle of the field inside of two minutes when they always rush 4? Desai is a bigger issue than Johnson.

The Colts have wrs at 2) and 3). The Eagles have the most snaps, total, for the top 2 wrs, the Colts are 2nd. Siri came from the Colts. Maybe playing the wrs more than any other team is a Colts/Siri thing and not a Johnson thing? newsflash ... they made mistakes last year too. They made mistakes earlier this season and sometimes early in games. It has nothing to do with snap counts. The Eagles just happen to keep their guys in on goal line runs while most teams bring in extra TEs/linemen and we haven't had any big blowout wins where we could take starters out and our WRs (Brown and Smith) haven't missed time with injuries. They just aren't perfect every play. I doubt we'll ever see another game where Hurts, Brown, and Smith all lose a fumble.

Desai is a bigger issue than Johnson. Johnson was the QB coach since Jalen was a starter so they've been together 3 years now. Not being familiar with each other isn't correct but even so, that's not the problem. The problem is that Brian Johnson was fast tracked to OC years before he was ready. He is under developed as an OC and while he is working on his own development (a slow, multi-year process) he cannot develop Hurts at the same time. The great Bill Walsh had 11 years from first assistant coaching job in the NFL until becoming a HC and that was with a bowl winning Stanford HC gig in the middle there after he left the Bengals. We all know what he accomplished regarding player and coaching development at the 49'ers. I say it's because he was ready for the job. He had the necessary experience. He was fully developed to take over as HC and install his offense. The point is that even an all time great coach needed more than a couple years in the NFL as an assistant to grow into a coach that can develop players properly. A lesser coach takes longer. Nothing Johnson has shown indicates he's on par with Walsh during Walsh's developmental years, like when he created the WCO. I'd say Hurts has stagnated and looks like he's regressing because the Eagles forgot that there is NO substitute for experience and Johnson is an OC 5-10 years too early. Then again, he's a family friend of Hurts, so...whatever. The whole thing looks like someone trying to do the finish work before the house is fully framed. It's Herky-Jerky with no plays setting up other plays. Throw in the lack of concentration and discipline and it's what we should expect, a inconsistent s*** show that looks good statistically but when needed consistently, it falls flat.

Philosophy seems to be get the ball down field to the play makers when they are onesies with a DB. When it's missing the offense looks bad. I'm guessing that Siri influences this philosophy and approach more than BJ. Last week things looked much better. I'd prefer more RB runs but they dialed up some good stuff. Fumbles and drops were an issue from guys that usually make those plays. I think a lot of it was due to mental and physical fatigue. They guys fumbling get a lot of snaps... practically all of them. I feel encouraged from some of the all-22 footage and I'm wondering if Siri is starting to back off a bit to let BJ do his thing.

It's pretty much been like that for the past 2 years, cover Brown and Smith and you have a good chance in beating the Eagles. If they do that in Seattle they lose the game, count on it, they have a pretty good secondary. BTW, in the Dallas game, Dak targeted 8 players.
December 15, 20231 yr I dunno why every pass Jalen makes seems so hard. While somehow Brock Purdys passes look so easy and the guy is always wide open.

Because pass plays are called others besides Deebo, Aiyuk, and Kittle, the keyword being "called". When a pass is thrown to anyone except the Eagles main 3 it's usually a last ditch effort when Hurts is scramble for his life because the main 3 didn't come open because they're being keyed on, defenses know not to look at any other receiver, pass plays are rarely if ever called for them to be the #1 option. Once again, the Eagles offense is bigtime elementary.
December 15, 20231 yr 33 minutes ago, opa-opa said: I dunno why every pass Jalen makes seems so hard. While somehow Brock Purdys passes look so easy and the guy is always wide open. Because the majority of their routes are short and designed for the QB to get the ball out quickly. They also use a lot of motion which gives the receivers an easier opportunity to set up their routes and get open quickly. Meanwhile the majority of the routes the Eagles run are 10+ yards down the field and we probably use the last amount of motion of anyone in the league. It's amazing that when they actually do utilize slants they are highly successful at it and yet every time it's an obvious blitzing down there doesn't seem to be any hot routes for Hurts to go to.
December 15, 20231 yr Yeah last two games everytime AJ caught a slant he got like 20+ yards. Why didnt we just keep doing that? And people complain about that AJ and Quez drop. Yeah sure the pass was there but those were not easy passes to catch, the defender was draped all over him. Why not just make things easier for our receivers?
December 15, 20231 yr The majority of the offensives woes are because of Johnson. Although, when players are missing blocks, fumbling, taking foolish penalties and generally playing with no urgency, no offensive coordinator or head coach can overcome that. As johnson needs to be held accountable, so do the players.

I think it's mainly the play design and play calling. When you don't establish a run game, your offense is one dimensional and then to make it worse most of the routes are intermediate to long distance that take too long to develop. Brock Purdy has an easier job because his offensive coaches aren't buffoons, if he's playing against a soft bend but don't break defense he's just throwing wide open slants, ins/outs, comebacks, drags.

You could argue Steichen was fast tracked. What did he really do prior to being here? On top of that AR was a QB coach before being the Eagles HC. Johnson being the QB coach isn’t the same as him being the OC. It takes time and brining in a new face isn’t going to fix anything at especially right now. This one needs to play out, but where is Sirianni in all this? He’s the HC and an offensive mind in his own right. He used to call the offensive plays. He needs to step up.

Either go deep or throw away or maybe a dump off. They try play action when they don’t even try to establish the run game. The offense doesn’t offer easier short passes to free up players to get them in space except for occasional screens. They need to run the ball way more than they do.
December 19, 20231 yr Lol don't know why I thought I'd see some last minute coaching change on offense
December 19, 20231 yr He sucks. And there’s no reason think he’ll turn it around. None. This dude is gonna call that stupid bubble screen until he gets Smitty killed. Either by blocking or by catching that predictable junk and getting annihilated as he catches the ball. oh! Leonard Williams saw the screen to Deandre Swift coming? Gee. I wonder why? Maybe because BJ has called that play from the same formation, in the same quarter, on the same down for the past 5 weeks!! the inside zone gets the eagles 3 yards at most. But it’s as much because of the situational and formational predictability as it is because the o-line isn’t getting a push. I just want the season to end so Johnson can get the F OUTTA HERE
December 19, 20231 yr BJ needs to go! After that atrocity last night he needs to go. Hurts was pretty bad again but he did nothing to help his QB who had been really unwell. He can’t survive that not after they removed Desai from duties.
December 19, 20231 yr You mean you don't love those creative WR Screens that not only don't work for anything positive, each time they look like they have a chance to either be picked off or they look like the Eagles version of the Keystone Cops with people running into each other?
December 19, 20231 yr This isn't all on Johnson, Sirianni is right there, he can reach down and situational calls will be his, hell, it's his playbook and right now there doesn't look to be that many plays in there (what are they saving them for at this point?), which is what makes the sloppy execution so baffling. The whole thing just screams a lack of invention, there's nothing tricksy, the only look they occasionally pull a surprise out on is the Brotherly shove. Either we're playing the best coverage teams in the league all year or we're running all the same routes we've run hundreds of times before and defenses know where to sit, meantime I watch below average offenses routinely get guys open against our secondary. Our screen game especially to Swift and Smith is a bad joke, Leonard Williams diagnosed most of them last night, which is no surprise because I could do it sat on my couch, because we've been failing at it all season apart from one play a couple of games back where Johnson pulled it out his ass on 3rd and 19, which is pretty much the dumbest time to pull it out and probably fooled the defense into thinking it couldn't possibly be that.
