I’m thinking he might look good in this offense.  Why not?

Who wants to put $ that @eagle45 comes in here at some point today and is anti Ertz because that’s too much 12 personnel

TE1 is averaging 4.2 catches per game for 45.6 yards per game in 2023

TE2 is averaging 3.9 catches per game for 26.7 yards per game in 2023

Both have missed games due to injury.

TE3, TE4 and TE5 have a combined 4 catches for the year.

The Eagles have no depth at TE. They have bodies but not depth. IMO, it's a no brainer for Ertz to sign here.

Ertz has been on IR with the Cardinals with a hammy.  How healthy is Ertz really?

I'd love to have him here, but realistically he would be buried in the depth chart and would not see the field much.

If he can't stay healthy then why sign him besides nostalgia

I posted a number of times last year about how Stoutland would have Seumalo pull and pass block on the opposite side. This year he's pulling Dickerson to do the same thing. This is a key breaker for the defense because when a guard pulls, he's normally leading you to the hole as a lead blocker. Dickerson does this too but with the pulling action, particularly on RPOs he's giving the LB over him an impossible read because they can't determine whether it's run or pass. Another nice wrinkle I picked up is when the Eagles line up strong left - with a TE on that side - they motion the TE across the formation and pull both the LG and LT behind him, going from strong left to strong right. They did that on a QB draw but, unfortunately, Dickerson whiffed on his block and a really pretty-looking play got blown up. Dickerson makes that block and Hurts gets a chunk gain.

Remember how many complaints there were in the blog about the Eagles not using motion? Well, they ran a ton of motion against the Bills. They motioned TEs, AJ Brown, and both Swift and Gainwell at one time or another. BJ is really opening up the playbook and I think Stoutland has a lot of input there.

All nice to see.

Thursday Morning Predictions Update

31 predictions recorded thus far.  24 for an Eagles win and 7 for a 49ers win.  The Average Predicted Score is an Eagles win by the eerily familiar score of 28-23.

As always, please tag your prediction post with @mattwill that way I will be sure to see/record it.  Score predictions can also have an optional "Bonus Pick" tiebreaker prediction.  So far over the course of the season 122 different EMB posters have made at least one prediction.

Lets see if we can get to 100 predictions submitted this week!

A list of the predictions is presented below, sorted alphabetically by the name of the predictor.  If you don't see your name there, then I haven't yet recorded a prediction for you.

Don't think Cox will play, don't want to make that groin worse.

If the choice is Ertz or Leonard due to cap space, who do you choose?

I'd take Leonard.

32-20 Eagles

Considering the injuries, the Niners’ extra rest and us coming off an emotional and physically taxing game, a win Sunday would be our most impressive of the year.

Except they signed Ben VanSuren to the active roster today, so that LB position is now full. I think the Leonard move has passed us by. I know he wants to wait for the weekend but BVS is now on the roster.

They had to sign him so they could have 3 LBs active. If we want Leonard we will find room.

BVS was going to be elevated either way for the game Sunday. I don’t think that prohibits Leonard from signing.

Hate saying it but it would take like a SBLII type performance by the offense and the defense would have to play like they did vs. Miami. Could happen but they’d need to be the most focus they have all year and play 4 quarters not just portions of games.

To expand upon the TE pulling from one side to the other, normally that is in the form of a split zone, where the entire OL runs inside zone to the side from which the TE is pulling, i.e. the TE lines up on the left side and pulls across to the right side while the OL zone blocks to the left. In the variant I mentioned above, out of this same TE motion, which starts out looking like a split zone, pulling both LT and LG makes it a strong run to the right. IOW, what starts out as an inside zone left becomes a counter-trey to the right with three lead blockers. On the play I mentioned earlier, when Dickerson whiffed, the RB was also a lead blocker, so there were four extra guys blocking to that side. It didn't work because Dickerson whiffed, but man! it was a beautiful concept.

He can be cut.

Pretty sure julio is gonna be cut if it comes to that. They have Watkins back and sims on PS now. Julio doesn’t play ST. Don’t need Watkins and julio on a roster where neither play special teams.

I think, but could be wrong, but don't you have to keep a guy on the roster for at least 3 weeks if he's been signed to the active roster?
