OK educate me. Why if you trade a player would not the "cap hit" be the cap saved by trading them?

OK.... lets learn something today...

The cap hit is a combination of a few things...

Goedert 2025   ...

Salary = $1.255 mil

Signing bonus = $1.904  mil

Option bonus = $3,277 mill

Workout Bonus = $250k

Other Bonus = $5.124 mil

And you add dem all togedderrrrrrrr   $11.8 mil

You follow so far ...

You call the Chiefs a dynasty because they won titles!   Why would you call anyone else a dynasty?

You been visiting planet Ham lately?

I said 4/32 were "good" 1 is a dynasty. That leaves 28 teams that can be beaten on game day. Even the lowly Panthers got a win this week. There are no teams with no wins. If all those teams played vs the same team every week, they would not win every game,so seems to me most teams have a chance to win on game day which sounds like parity to me which is what the league wants. They want every team to have a chance to win or the fans go away and the team goes BK

what is "other bonus"?

Now step 2 ....

If we trade Goedert prior to next season... then the 2025,2026 and 2027 prorated bonuses all get counted in 2025.

That total = $11,092 mil     .... of Ham's favorite.... DEAD MONEY.

So if he was traded wouldn't all that transfer to the buyer?

If 2025 is his last contract year why would 26 and 27 be there at all? Why is there pro rated bonuses for a player not under contract?

Step 3....   We would save the $11.8 mil of cap hit that it would cost to keep him  ..

But...

We would then have to absorb the $11.092 mil of cap hit ... DEAD MONEY ... that it would cost to trade him.

So..

For those who passed math in 2nd grade .... 11.8 mil  - 11.092 mil = $708k

That is you cap savings for trading Goedert ...

Except, then you have to add another player, and count that guy's money... so in reality, you don't save anything from trading Goedert prior to 2025.

The year where it would save you money would be 2026.

Really.... you don't know this yet after all these years?

I have difficulty with extended deals after the contract ends. IDK how you can extend things past the time they are contracted for. It's like imaginary friends LOL

Again... 2024 journalism...  clueless.

So GM's can extend costs even AFTER the contact is up on "the assumption" we would re-sign them

OK... try to follow...

I sign you to a 5 year $100 mil contract ...

$10 mil per year salary (5 years)  ... but I give you a $50 mil signing bonus up front.

So you make $60 mil year one.... $10 mil per year salary years 2 to 5.   .. total of $100 mil..

Your cap hit each year would be $20 mil.... the $10 mil salary + the " PRORATED" signing bonus... $10 mil

BUT...

I cut or trade you after 3 years ...    So you have only had $30 mil of your signing bonus count toward the salary cap..  ( $10 mil for 3 years)

So..

I already paid you the $50 mil ... year 1.    Up until now only $30 mil has counted toward the cap.     So what happens to that other $20 mil when I trade or cut you?   It counts immediately towards the current year cap.     So in this case... $20 mil would count toward the cap, but I would save your $10 mil salary (the $10 mil is what the new team inherits, not the signing bonus that I paid you)

With Goedert, and with most Eagles.... he was paid early, because players like that.   The cap hit gets spread out... so at this point there really in no net gain in trading Goedert.   That would come in 2026.

The GM isn't extending anything... the team already paid the money, it just hasn't counted vs the cap yet... the downside of getting rod of a player is that it all has to count right then. All the remainder of the bonus that was not counted vs the cap yet.

But the contract ends in 2025,so why at that point would there be any money involved at all after that? Unless he was re-signed. Obviously if we let his contract run it's course there should be zero money involved after that so why would there be "savings" in 2026? The savings would be because we no longer pay him anything

OK I'm starting to get it a little. The 2026 savings would be because the 2025 cost of the trade is off the books but was still on the books in 2025 even though we traded him in 2024 correct?

So in essence we carry some cost in 2025(contract expiration year) that drops off in 2026 and the new owner would only pay his salary(unless the deal is reworked by the buyer) and we carry the additional costs on our books through the end of 2025

So for 708K I think he's worth keeping LOL(even missing some games)

Anyway, I would still look at that TE prospect in the next draft as a late 2 early 3 to add to the TE stable in the event we lose Goedert that same year( end of 2025). He would be a nice prospect even if we re-signed Goedert to a short term deal. Being from Iowa we could pick DeJean's brain for any inside info as to whether he would be a "go" or "no go" The kids biggest drawback is they don't use him much which offers a smaller sample of his ability. The question then is WHY aren't they using him much? But I will try to watch the Iowa games to see him in action myself. Calc had made nice strides this year, much better than the last ones. Maybe Moore is teaching him the points he needed to learn

The Eagles 1,585 rushing yards is the most for the Birds in 74 years through the first 9 games of a season The Eagles are averaging 194 rushing yards a game during their 5 game winning streak, most in the NFL

Correct   ...and yes still worth looking at a TE prospect ..... and the reason money still counts vs the cap is he has " void" years ... which in essence allow you to count money after the player leaves... its a method of spreading out the cap hit further.

Two advantages.... spreading out the cap hit lowers it each year... and also the time value... the cap goes up each year, so for example.... instead of taking the extra $15 mil of cap hit during 2021 to 2025... you take some of it ($5 mil each year) in 2026-2028... when the cap jumps tremendously.

Ham hates it... he doesn't get the rolling cap to where any extra cap space carries forward, so its a wash.

Example... Eagles have $10 mil of cap space left for 2024.   $32 mil next year ... if we don't use the $10 mil....then next year we start with $42 mil.

bUt wE hAvE to pay void years....   lol       That's already calculated in the cap space.

If we didn't use that method... we could have zero now... and then just have $42 next year... it's a wash.    But better to push that down the road because the cap keeps going up.

Salary cap was $155 mil in 2016     ...8 years later it's $255 mil.      You push $5 mil down the road.... that's 1/31 of the 2016 salary cap but only 1/51 of the 2024 cap.

Time value of money.
