Think about something for a second. As strange as this is to ponder, Smith earned his extension before Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, Ja'Marr Chase, Brandon Aiyuk, Jaylen Waddle, Tee Higgins, and Amon-Ra St. Brown earned theirs. Here's what that means. They have locked DeVonta in before the wide receiver market explodes.

Props to Howie

Has to get you pondering what he’s thinking on the future plans

Does this signal a very likely parting with AJ? Will he draft a WR in the first two days of this draft? Heck even trade up to 16 to grab the last upper tier WR?

Maybe he trades AJ to Allen in Buffalo to counter the costs of moving up and grabbing the replacement WR. Bills are in major need of a WR.

The WR market is on the precipice of completely blowing up. So that fifth year option is actually a very great deal for The Slim Reaper. You(No Mas) can’t see this…because it’s heavy on the cap for 2025 instead of overly backloading things. In a rolling cap situation a good deal…is a good deal. Saves us money and was wise. No matter how hard it was for Rosie to choke down.

I don't think you are understanding the contract yet... let's wait so I don't have to explain it to you.

But think for a second how your are supporting exactly why I said there was no " deadline of having to rush to extend Smith before May 2"...  because as you said...the $15.5 mil isn't a bad deal for the Eagles.

I agree...so why would they need to do it before May 2 if they are getting a good deal with 5th year option?

No Mas....the 5th year option is good

No Mas... but they have to extend him before being forced to give him the 5th year option?

You don't see the contradiction?

They were never under any pressure to get it done before May 2.   The deadline in the fall where new money can No longer be used on the 2024 books is all that ever mattered.

You usually are adamantly against paying the fifth year options….because it involves guaranteed full single season cap hit.

All leverages. Just like how I showed the media quote about beating Jefferson and others to the punch.

Yes....when done....BY ITSELF.   Let's wait to get the details of the extension...so I don't have to keep explaining...and you argue just to argue per usual via the abstract... when the numbers come in and you can see the cap hits being lowered with the signing bonus...then we can talk.

I’m not arguing to argue. Nothing happened different than I previously was stating I expected to happen. Before Jefferson signs? Check. Before May 2nd? Check. 25 mil average annual? Check.

So then you agree…it needed to be done before May 2nd(done by itself).Settled then.

Yes.... yes....leverage by doing the contract early...now you are getting it.  Team always owns the leverage when paying early.

But the Eagles use that leverage without F@#$ing over the players.  They put money in Smiths pocket now....  the small minded person sees 3 years $75 million.   The reality is the deal will be restructures again ...EARLY... which will help the Eagles again... the leverage will be the guaranteed money running out... and the pay scale being raised ..Smith will want to get a new deal with higher $$ and more guarantees.    It's win win now.... and will be win win in 2027 again.

Smith will always get paid early.... and the Eagles will stay ahead of the big cap hits.

Do the deal early.... opposite of Dallas.  Who will exercise 5th year option on Parsons but won't extend him...then get F@$$Ed with cap hits later.   Just like they are about to do with Lamb and probably a second time with Dak.

Why May 2....explain that?

The signing bonus can’t be that big. This year on top of his cap number wouldn’t be as big if a deal. But a huge signing bonus number divided on top of next year’s guaranteed fifth year option? You’re getting into the twenties of millions on the cap then.

No ...it never had to be done before May 2nd.   Only thing happening by May 2nd was the 5th year option would have been in place.   The deadline is the middle of the season date where they can no longer use new money in 2024.

And reality they could have a second date next year where the 5th year option is locked in similar to the franchise tag...the May 2nd was irrelevant.

Again... I'm tired of explaining it to you....when the numbers come in ...we can talk.

You are assuming the entire 5th year option is going to coubt like a full salary amount vs the cap.  Once you have that locked into your brain...I have zero shot of getting through.

Remember...exercising a 5th year option... is different than paying the 5th year option.  That doesn't go on the books yet.

Even if they exercised the option on May 2nd... they could still extend and change/ restructure later.

2 different deadlines....one this fall where they can use 2024...and then another where they can do the change before the final 2025 5th year option salary is locked in.

Think about it... Aiyuk you said wants to be traded...right now he is on the books for the 5th year option... but that can change ...still not the deadline yet...same with Lamb and Jefferson who are going into 5th years.

Dallas,Minnesota and SF can still write new deals that supercede the 5th year option.

I mean...on May 2... all that would have happened was the Eagles guaranteeing Smith was on the books for only $15.5 mil....meaning that's all he was going to get paid in 2025...after a cheap 4th year this year.

The Eagles had leverage with the 5th year.... you made it sound like Smith had the leverage?

Ok.... so let's think about it.   Why would Smith sign... NOW.... if the signing bonus isn't big....and he doesn't get any real money until 2026?   Why do it now ...he won't play until September ...camp until late July....no injury risk.... and why before the market explodes?

There has to be something in it for him... NOW!

Absolutely. He always has something up his sleeve. I have no clue what to expect come Day 1. That's what makes it so exciting to me; full of suspense.

I honestly don't think AJ is a trade piece. Pretty sure he wants to keep the Hurts/AJ chemistry. Next season I can see a WR picked high in the draft.

AJ is here 2 more years....we said when he signed that he was going to be here 4 years....something is going to happen before his 5th year ( 2026 kicks in)

The beauty is Smith won't be paid until 2026... so it's a one year problem or they redo AJ before then....and Smith redo before or after 2027.

People are so uneducated they don't see the details.  The details of the $$$ matter.  Ask Dallas fans.

Dickerson and Mailata will get restructured in a couple years also...  you can do this over and over once you get them in after year 3.

Do you miss on some?   Sure, but still best way to do it when you analyze the numbers.
