Flyers depth is impressive. Hextall filled the cupboard

Hextall got fired.

Chuck Fletcher and his scouts filled the cupboard.

This is 80% the team that Hextall built. Hextall needed to leave; he refused to bring up Carter Hart, Phil Myers and NAK and kept an awful coach in Dave Hakstol. Fletcher made some great moves; signing Hayes, hiring Alain Vigneault and trading for Matt Nisnaken.

Hextall drafted all of these young guys.  Give him his due on that.  Fletch has obviously made great trades and FA signigs since he got here.  But Hexy drafted very well.  Sanheim, Konecny, NAK, Provy, Hart, Lindblom, Patrick, Frost, found Meyers.

True.

But as RLC said, Hextall had to go.  His plan was not working and we would still be in the doldrums.

Completely agree.  He drsfted great but hired the worst coach and refused to fix that mistake

The Flyers could be the team to watch in Philly.  They have a great mix of youth and veteran players.  They do have some decisions to make moving forward with some of their aging guys but with Carter Hart, their blue line. TK and other young forwards this team could be exciting for years.

The Eagles need to really pack in the young talent to keep pace.

I hope this doesn't come as a surprise to anyone.

If this is his last year then at least we can say he had the most important fumble recovery in franchise history.

Didn't they already give him the 5th year option?

Putting your neck out for Dave Hakstol would be like doing that for Rich Kotite or Chip Kelly. It never made any sense. Hextall was great at the draft though.

How long til the haters remind us that he ran backwards after recovering the ball?

Yes but they can pull it. With their cap situation, and him being $10M or so, they might

Really?  I thought once it was exercised it became guaranteed.

Starting with the new CBA its that way. This year is the last of the old one, so its guaranteed for injury only. I believe they have up to the 5th day of the new league year (2021) to pull it, then it becomes fully guaranteed.

Well, if he has another year like his first 3, I could see them pulling it..

Pull it!!!

They should have done it with Agholor. We’ll see if they learned their lesson

Personally, I hope he has a really good season with 8-10 sacks.  Better he plays,  better Eagles will be.  If he remains what he has been, his 10 million will be needed for a replacement.

I was backpacking around Europe, was in a small town in Germany called Murnau having a weiss  beer and weiss brat for breakfast when I read the story about Pelle in the Herald Tribune.  I didn't believe it so I went to a pay phone and made an international call to my friend to confirm.  Sad sad day.  I rented a bike and went to a lake.  Picked a couple ears of corn from a field that I passed and discovered it was feed corn when I tried to eat them that n isn't in the youth hostel.   Fall of 1985.  The things we remember.....

I don't know.  Let's look at how the Eagles value DE.  Jevon Kearse was the last real huge splash they made at DE and that was 16 years ago under a different staff.  He didn't come close to living up to the contract.  Since Kearse the Eagles have had the following:

Trent Cole- 5th round gem/ signed 2 extensions with the Eagles biggest being 4 yr $48 mililon

Darren Howard- FA signed 6 yr $30 million, never played up to his NO level of play.  I liked Howard but far from a FA splash, dominant end

ND Kalu- JAG

Juqua Paker-JAG

Jason Babin- 5 yr/$28 million.  One monster year for the biggest Jacka$$ to ever wear green.  We know how that ended

Connor Barwin- Signed as an OLB 6 yr $36 million.  Moved around with the 3-4 switch and back to 4-3.  Great Eagle, put up good numbers but not an investment at DE

Brandon Graham-  traded up on the 1st. 2 extensions 4 yr $26 million/3 yr $40 million- Love BG, great Eagle, SB hero but hardly a GREAT DE.  He's not a threat.  He's solid all-around.

Chris Long- 2 yr $4.5 millon.  Brought in at 32 years old.  Another great Eagle.  Rotational end, Super Bowl winner

Michael Bennett- traded 5th round pick for 33 year old DE.  Bennett was a good all around end, aging with OK sack numbers.

Vinny Curry- 2nd round draft pick- 5 yr $47 million 2 different 1 yr contracts since.  Vinny is a SB winner, decent run defender.

Derek Barnett- 1st round pick still on rookie deal.  1 big fumble recovery.  Hasn't eclipsed 7 sacks yet.

Those are your starters and UFA investments since Jevon Kearse.  Didn't include all of the back-ups

On the current roster, Sweat, Miller and Avery are all 4th round investments.  Ostman is a UDFA.  Sadly they just don't put value there anymore.  If Barnett gets 10 sacks, the Eagles aren't going to pay the market gives those numbers.  There is also no way I see them trading a 1st rounder and paying for Yannick.

DE is now a complimentary position.  They place their value on dominant DT play and let the average DE control the edge.

Good points.  Are you saying even if Barnett is cut next year they won't use that money on a DE?

My guess, just basing off their trends in building the roster, is they will try to extend Barnett during the season with hopes he does break out.    If he has a big season he walks as a free agent next year and they replace him in the draft.
