But honestly, I DO take inflation into account when assessing stock\fund\etc performance. I've always considered stocks as a check against inflation because short term inflation can drive up stock price, but that doesn't necessarily mean the stock is out performing its historical average during that same period.

I'm with you. If we're going to seriously talk about the market then I'm really not concerned too much about the volatility. We're due for a downturn anyway.
