It's not an issue of what others think.  If I end up with a glass of red from before I was served my Chilean sea bass, @hputenis mocking me would have no impact.  I would ask him to put his dong back in his pants and return to his table.

It's a matter of taste.  A lot of white wines have too much bite to be enjoyable with a steak.  Conversely red's arn't acidic enough to balance out a fish dinner.

Also, I'm not going to pry but I hope everything is ok.  I've mostly cut out alcohol for health reasons too.  (No diagnosis, just trying to lose weight and be healthier overall)

I judge the white wine and steak people from afar.  However, if this is going to be a problem for you, then we may throw hands.

He may have been the highest paid player at his position when he signed the contract, but in one more off-season, he probably will fall out of the top 10 on a per year average basis.  In two seasons, he will probably be right in the middle.  I’m not sure his contract is that big of a deal anymore.

All that said, in the future, I really only give a QB a huge 2nd deal if I truly think he’s going be a consistent top 3-5 guy.  If not, keep reloading the position.

I’m just pointing out that with all the contracts that have been signed recently, his doesn’t look as bad as it once did.  And in another year or two, it won’t even look bad at all.

He's 9th on a per year average. Next up is Purdy but I'd be surprised if he got 52M to bump Hurts out of the top 10

I’d be very surprised if Purdy didn’t get it.   Whether it is with the Niners, or another team… Either way he gets it .  Plus, Josh Allen will be due for a renegotiation in a year or two, also Stroud in a couple.  Hurts is probably 13-14 on the list in 2 years.

My only point is when people bring up the contract, I don’t think they’re making as strong as a case as they think they are.  His QBR ranking is about the same as his salary ranking.. .. it’s all relative

Can the contract experts explain Hurts contract? @paco I'm not a cap/contract guy. The cap number column shows he made $6m last year, and $13.5m this year.

But 2024 at the top also says a $40m cash payment? Is that a signing bonus spread out or something? So add to the $13.5m this year cap number and it's $53m?

Also, people are saying move on in 2026 but the dead money would be $52m? We know with those back loaded years, Howie does restructures once it hits that point, or finds a way out like he did with Wentz. But trying to understand. Help explain for idiots like me that don't get the cap. Thanks. :-)

You even saw it last week.  A couple of plays where the guy is wide open right in front of Hurts and he does not throw him the ball.  Pitch and catch.  A bit of a mystery.

He will get it and he's having a worse year than Jalen thus far, plus he has more turnovers.  If Hurts is a game manager right now, does that make Mahomes one as well? The guy has 6 passing TDs vs 8 INTs on the year.  I'm not saying you're classifying either as one, it's just a question I pose to anyone that reads this.

My only counter point is Hurts and his agent will also want to re-address his contract probably in 2 years which will move him back up the list.

I could point out each week where pretty much every single QB misses a guy.  I'm sure fans of other teams probably whine like ours do too though, thinking its a singular problem, lol. I think the one that sucked the most was the one to Barkley, because it was an easy TD, thankfully the team still scored.

To put it simply, you need to separate cash and cap. His contract is structured to basically have rolling yearly "option" bonuses. Once the option bonuses are paid, they are spread over 5 years. So the option bonus he was paid this year spreads out from 2024 to 2028. Next years option bonus will be spread out 2025 to 2029, etc etc. This is why he has void years up to 2032. So he's getting paid a lot of money while keeping cap hits relatively small, until further down the line when it starts to snowball. There really isn't an option to restructure because the way the contract is already structured is as if he's getting restructured every year.

In terms of getting out, he still has a lot of guarantees, and still has triggers that continue to guarantee these bonuses. You aren't going to simply cut him for awhile but the out would be to trade him for other teams to pick up those option bonuses. If they trade him in 2026, it's only $32M in dead cap which could be split up via Post-June 1st trade. 2027 is only $21M dead in a trade.

Which he'll more than likely get.  Dak is the highest paid QB this season.  If we're talking about actual turnovers, he and Hurts are tied with 7, but if we accounted simply for how many times each player has fumbled/thrown a pick, Dak leads him by 1.  Jalen has accounted for more TD's too.  My point is, even if they revisited the contract today, he'd have a strong argument for why he deserves top money.

On the all 22 view of the 3rd and 2 where Hurts scambles to his left and Devonta is literally dragging across the field WIDE open in front of his face, and he holds the ball and forces it to the sideline OOB, I almost woke up my friend's kids from their naps.

That’s a bridge you cross at that time.  Just because he has a no trade clause, does not mean he is not tradable.  It just means that he has to agree to it. Eagles don’t have to say yes to another extension, and my gut tells me they wouldn’t.

Oh, I agree about the NTC. Especially in the NFL. If a team explores trading their QB the relationship is over and all they get is a say of their next spot. It's really nothing more than that.

I was just saying his contract is not a static number. Just like some will jump him their will be a time he jumps others. Looking at where his contract stands now, even though he's 9th, he is still the 9th highest paid player in the league and isn't that far off from being the 2nd. I think the NFL is more geared to paying for future production, so it's not great that you invested that much money into a player who has regressed. I think most would agree that all were hoping for more than what we have received so far.

He’s not wrong. It reminds me of the second half of 2021 offense when they went more run-centric. It can win you games and get you to the playoffs, but you can only hide your quarterback for so long until you play a powerhouse team. Hurts made one good throw last week and was pretty much stashed the rest of the way since the ground game was dominant. That won’t happen every game and not against elite defenses. They need 2022 Hurts and it seems like he’s been straying further from that for a year now.

Yeah… The smartest thing the restaurant industry did was to rename the Patagonian Toothfish to Chilean Seabass
