It's because they operate as charities, at least for the ones that actually follow the tenets of the faith (love thy neighbor, the man with two coats shall give to the man with none, etc). But as we all know, idealistic notions are easily corrupted by selfishness and greed as soon as those in power begin to have Joel Osteen like ambitions.

Yeah it sucks that they're getting a bad rep because there are so many honest churches that do so much good in their communities. But as is always the case, all it takes is a handful of sheety ones to ruin it for everyone.
