Jalen Hurts - shoulder sprain injury; expected for playoffs

That is Charles Barkley's quote, not mine.  No way of telling anything about either player at this point.  Wentz has a body of work in the NFL, Jalen Hurts does not, and was not overly impressive last week.  Multiple people have broken down the problems with the Saints defense in the first half, and Allen corrected and shut him down in the second besides a short field TD.

We know you hate Wentz, hopefully you are just as critical of Hurts when he struggles as more film is acquired.  Cardinals have a LB and Safety both fast enough to spy, and they will not crash inside and set a soft edge like the Saints did in the first half.

If Jalen Hurts was making $35M/yr while being the worst starting QB in the NFL I'd be just as critical of him as I am of Wentz.  That much cap being flushed down the toilet will cripple any team.

Meanwhile if Hurts busts out, it's no big deal because he's getting paid peanuts as a 2nd round pick.

For you to be more critical of a 2nd rounder making virtually nothing vs. a guy getting paid $35M/yr as the worst QB in the league is clear proof of your bias.  You've earned the "Washer" title.

Doesn’t matter who’s the QB if the Oline can’t block, the WR’s can’t get open, the coaches can’t coach and the GM can’t identify talent.

  • So we had to listen to an entire week of "He runs too much".   What will the talking points be this week?  Jalen and this Team can win in multiple ways.  Stop trying to put him in some box where he on

Looking forward to Hurt's second start.

You can't overreact one way or another, you have to see how things go.  Earlier this season people got excited about Fulgham, saying we have a legit #1 WR and don't need to take one in the draft, we have an elite receiver.  Now that he's disappeared or got "figured out" or whatever, people are saying tank to take a top WR in the draft.

So you can't anoint Hurts after 1 game, what if he "gets figured out" or comes back down to earth?  Let's see what happens.  At the same time, you can't downplay his performance in his first start as a rookie facing the top defense, that's a tough situation and he made some really great plays.  His teammates are praising him a lot for his confidence, leadership and preparation.

Balance, not extremes.

Funny how all the excuses for Wentz, bad receivers, bad line, bad coaching, etc suddenly don’t exist now that Hurts came in and did more with that exact same supporting cast.

When it was Wentz, everyone else is to blame. Now Hurts goes in to the same situation, manages to keep mistakes minimized and provides 24 points of offense to beat the best team in the NFC... and suddenly it’s "Hurts wasn’t overly impressive” in his first start.

If it turns out he is merely a solid, healthy game manager that limits the turnovers and sacks, I'd be very happy with that.

Frankly I'm done with "generational" QBs for this team. Mcnabb, Vick, Wentz...We don't know how to handle them, coach them or manage them when things go south. We do much much better when focusing on the trenches and running backs.

If he can hold things down whilst they rebuild this roster and give us decent QB play? And then in a few years or a couple of years once the roster is younger and more talented they go after a stud QB? I mean I think that would be OK.

I'd much rather the eagles had a game manager, a solid running game and a solid defense. A team, not just relying on super star QB to bail out the teams short comings.

I’m still cautiously optimistic that just MAYBE Hurts could be that guy. He seems to have the work ethic and attitude to continue to work on his game.

That's true. Seems to be a key element lacking in Wentz.

Honestly I dont question Wentz's work ethic or attitude, I question how he is working and his mental fragility. Its not a lack of effort... he's just a trainwreck

Who knows. We have such a small sample size at this point. I've definitely been impressed by him and I think he's shown in college that he can handle himself with maturity and deal with set backs. That's encouraging.

Anyway you slice it the NFL is a quarterback driven league. Game managers may win a lot of regular season games but when it comes to the playoffs you need your QB to be the best player on the field.

Agree. Every year just look at the last 4 QBs remaining in the playoffs and that will tell you everything. The eagles type SB win with a great team and decent QB seems to be very rare and even then, Foles happened to play like the greatest QB ever for one game to get it done

It's been 19 years since we won in Arizona. I dont see that trend changing this Sunday.

Its still 2020....

Some players are just suited for certain situations. Our current situation is... poor oline and WRs that need time to get open. Hurts can buy time with his legs for WRs to get open and elude sacks. He didn't have monster passing stats, but he kept the chains moving with his legs. He also made smart throw aways and actually slid feet 1st.

Wentz dives head 1st.  And isnt planning on changing that style of play (his own words not mine) despite getting his knees taking out AND a nasty concussion on separate occasions.  That in itself is concerning.  You gotta be smarter than that.

Forget about raw talent, wins, loses, td’s, ints, and all the other measurables and ask why it is that a rookie is playing smarter than a guy in his 5th season and numerous season ending injuries.

Mobile QBs typically get sacked more then pocket passers. Eventually Hurts will start getting smacked around.

Game managers have won plenty of Super Bowls recently.

2011 - Eli

2012 - Flacco

2015 - Peyton

2017 - Foles

That's four of the last 10.  Brady also was declining and did virtually nothing in the 2018 Super Bowl (put up only 13 pts), so you could say 5 out of 10.

I contend its worse to handcuff yourself to a highly paid QB that's not a franchise QB (like Wentz), as opposed to having a QB on a rookie deal making peanuts, so you can build the team elsewhere.

Who knows.  Russell wilson comes to mind

Hurts is not Russell Wilson.  One is a pass first QB and the other is a legs first, broken play QB.

Yeah by that could and should change in time.  Especially as he gets more familiar with his weapons around him
