Jalen Hurts - shoulder sprain injury; expected for playoffs

Everyone was excited (rightfully so) about the season Wentz put together in 2017 before getting injured.  Only purpose of posting that article was to point out that Hurts is actually having an even better season.

This all feels like I’m in a dream and you are all just figments of my imagination. None of this feels real. It’s all too wonderful and certainly some horrible person is about to wake me up, right?

Doesn’t matter who’s the QB if the Oline can’t block, the WR’s can’t get open, the coaches can’t coach and the GM can’t identify talent.

  • So we had to listen to an entire week of "He runs too much".   What will the talking points be this week?  Jalen and this Team can win in multiple ways.  Stop trying to put him in some box where he on

"Cornerback Darius Slay

"Oh, man — he’s been a leader ever since he was a rook. He’s always had that leadership mentality coming from Alabama. Being a quarterback there for so long, then going to Oklahoma and leading those guys. That’s something that he’s been doing for a long time. It’s like in the back of his mind. It’s too easy for him. It’s just second nature for him to be a leader. Now, it’s a different story with him playing the way that he’s been playing. It makes him an even better leader. He’s putting the league on notice with how he’s leading our team.

"He just carries himself the right way. He approaches the game the right way. I’ve seen way too many times, a lot of guys come to the league, and they think they know it all. He came in the league, and immediately he was ready to be a sponge around all the veterans. He listened. He paid attention. He watched how other people worked. I guess that has a lot to do with [Alabama coach Nick] Saban, too, because Saban has that type of effect on that. But Jalen came into the league with a great understanding of how to already be a pro. And then he got an even better understanding of how to be a pro. That type of mindset has elevated him so much as a young guy.”

This was Slay on Hurts and his leadership. They polled all of the Eagles captains and to a man said his leadership was always there. Leadership matters perhaps even more than talent. No one cares how big of an arm a quarterback has if they don’t think he’s a team guy or a leader. People wanted to downplay the effect of Jalen’s leadership to this team, but obviously these guys have brought in even before he was a starter.

I think the whole  leadership thing is being way over stated, in general- not just about Hurts. It's not something that is a big deal to yourself, if you are a leader. Why? It's a natural, built-in type of thing that is in you from birth. I have never seen anyone WORK to be a leader. You either ARE a leader, or you are NOT. I have always had leadership qualities, and I never asked for them or worked for them. They just....ARE. Sometimes it can be a pain in the arse, too. You either are born with it inside of you, or you are not. His skill set is WAY more important. Why? Because that can be developed and improved. The leadership qualities are just normal.

I didn't like the hotdog celebrations in the preseason and start of the year like when the OL pushed him in from behind and instead of celebrating with them for their assist he started dancing around acting like it was all him. I'm old school and it rubbed me the wrong way. I also don't have to like the guy to hope he does well and I won't be upset if he proves me wrong in many ways.

He hasn't proven crap yet unless they give out a SB trophy the first week of December. Carson looked all world MVP and went to crap. We will see. Dallas will be a good measuring stick. If he makes a Super Bowl that will be another. One and done where he looks pedestrian won't cut it.

For whatever reason, you have a bias against him as a player. I had the same for Wentz. Hated his arrogance from the beginning. To each his own.

I was a fan of Wentz when he arrived and after watching him in his 2nd year thought we had something special.  Obviously couldn’t have been more wrong.  I’m a huge Hurts fan … probably even more than I was of Wentz at the same point in their careers (12 games into year 2 as starter) mostly because of his work ethic and how well he handles himself (doesn’t ever seem to get too high or too low).  Love what I’ve see so far but completely understand the hesitation - I thought about that comparison too to how Wentz completely fell apart.  Something tells me Hurts is wired differently mentally and that it is less likely he travels the same path (**fingers crossed**).

This felt a little different to me. I wonder who he might be talking about. 😂🤷‍♂️

Pretty much TATE.

Even if Jalen goes one and done in the playoffs, my guess is it will turn out to be caused by bad coaching, turnovers, or some other factor. There hasnt been a single team ive seen yet that can shut him down.

Yeah, it's strange because I am neutral or have liked them the last 20 years. I root for him to do something special every play I'm just not a fan. I think it's because I expect him to let us down in the end,  which could be because of Wentz. He was a top pick,  everyone said how smart he was and how quickly he absorbed things, then the MVP year, and things went to hell.

McNabb was something exciting after a few hard years.

Kobb I didn't expect much from

Vick was exciting for a year

Foles was house money not much to lose

Sanchez didn't expect much

Bradford showed he was nothing special pretty fast

Hurts just seemed like a waste of time from the start because of all the scouting reports and then the Tampa game last year. Glad he is doing well. We will see.

I've been giving him his props this entire season, because he's earned it. Including in this thread, the main thread, GDT, etc.

But sure, if you want to say I'm just now being positive about him and ignore everything beforehand (in regards to this season), go ahead.

@ManchesterEagle @Bwestbrook36 have said as much in this very thread, that I've never outwardly hated him, rooted for him to fail, etc and they have both been more on the Hurts train than I was.

Whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess.

Yeah I never really saw @Bwestbrook36 as on the Hurts train. You were both Hurts sceptics but both open to actual reasoned discussions and both wanted him to succeed.

I have always been on the Hurts train to the extent that I believed he was better last year than a lot said and thought with hard work, another year in the same system and AJ Brown that he could turn into a top 10 QB. I can’t say I was sure or knew he would improve to this extent.

@Mike030270 was a Hurts hater but like some other posters has clearly come round on him and is happy he is playing really well.

There are some others who are so self absorbed that it seems they would rather Hurts fail than admit they were wrong.

I don’t exactly feel the same excitement about Jalen’s better season than Carson”s first. I wasn’t like every game that year was a great one.

His first season was 2016.. started strong with 3-0 then fell flat to 7-9 missing playoffs.. 😉

I don‘t think that‘s true. Yes there for sure are natural traits that help you be a leader yet it is something that can be improved and usually improves with experience in a leading position. Besides experience a good leader will question his decisions in hindsight and is honest in his self evaluation.

I get what you are talking about but there is some more to it - if you want to be the best you can be.

What I can’t stand about the Washers is they didn’t even give Hurts a chance.

When people like me had the common sense take that Wentz isn’t the guy… let’s give Hurts a chance to see if he is, these clowns dismissed him saying he sucked, was just a RB, and attacked those who were open minded enough to say "let’s see what the kid can do.”

Low iq circle jerk of haters that deserve all the shame and embarrassment they get.

To be fair some people still think he's just a RB...

Players don’t follow bad leaders. Kind of reminds me of when I believe Washington took that shot on Foles and JP went off, but when the Seahawks took that shot on Wentz, JP didn’t even bother really. They weren’t building a shrine in the locker room to Wentz now were they? In 2018 it was almost like they couldn’t wait for Foles to get back in there so the magic can happen. Is Nick Foles some special elite talent? Nope. Is Nick Foles more talented than Wentz? Nope. Yet some of the greatest moments in Eagles history have occurred with him under center. Players have to respect the guy that’s leading them.

The Eagles have the best record in football and at worst, a top 3 QB in football this season. I don't think anyone that wasn't sold on Hurts is embarrassed or shameful. People get things right, people get things wrong. That's life. I am glad he has made several of us look bad with our takes.

Taking a message board this seriously and pounding your chest is truly what's embarrassing.

It's either in your heart, soul, mind and spirit, or you will never be a true leader. You cannot teach it- you can only enhance it.... or waste it.
