They think we all drive trucks, wear jeans, put ketchup on everything, and chew tobacco. They're kinda half-right though, to be fair.

I've travelled to several countries and worked for a global company and worked regularly with people from Europe and India in meetings and in-person week long sessions and got to know a lot of what they know about the US. People criticize Americans for not knowing about Europe and other parts of the world except what we see on TV yet that's exactly how they are. Unless you've really travelled, most people only know what the stereotypes they see on TV. I had a colleague who was going to the US for vacation. She said she would be here for 1 week and was going to fly into New York City and explore, then rent a car and drive to Los Angeles and San Francisco. See all that in 1 week by car. What I've found is most Europeans are clueless about the United States just as many of us don't know their geography and culture. I saw a video where a British guy was complaining that when an American finds out he lives in England they'll ask "are you near London?" because it's the major city that everyone knows. He went on a rant that he lives 1 hour from London and no, that's not "near." Much smaller geography. People in the comments were explaining that yes, 1 hour away is near to us because people will commute that for work here. So many people really have no clue how big the US is and they could just look at a map. They don't realize that many of our states are bigger than their country. They don't realize there are different accents, culture, food, climate, etc. across the different regions. I tell them imagine the differences between England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Croatia...then they start to realize.

Had a lady tell me the same thing about driving across the US when I was on a local bus in Poland sheetfaced. My wife told her it’s not possible or at least not enjoyable. I had to explain to her that driving from Philly to Pittsburg can be 5 hours and that’s just one state. Pretty sure she didn’t believe us, but that could have been the alcohol.
