I got my vaccine and my booster and will continue to see to it that my kids do as well. Really only a few weeks until my youngest can get it. Good luck to everyone, including Kz and lynched. Go Birds! This is where I’ve been for 6 months. The vaccine is available to anyone who has enough sense to get it. I’ve talked everyone I can into protecting themselves. Lift all mask mandates and let the chips fall where they lay.

Putting aside the Civil War, the only real comps are Vietnam and the end of the George W Bush presidency with Iraq and the financial crash. I wasn't alive for Vietnam, but back then there was only network news. So the country was divided, but that division wasn't actively stoked by either side (at least through media outlets). Plus, the war went from a Democratic administration to a Republican one. You also had civil rights at the same time...but again, there wasn't a sense of people hating other Americans just because of voter registration. It was more those who trusted the institutions versus those who wanted to radically change them. 2008/2009 with the financial crisis was bad, but not this bad IMO. Yeah, you have the OWS clowns in the park in NYC, and people were threatening bank executives. But the anger was directed primarily at bankers, Wall Street and politicians. Now, we have vitriol directed to other Americans based on political party. I don't think we've seen that since the days of abolitionists vs. anti-abolitionists.

What's divided the nation is probably lack of a common enemy that unites us. The last time the nation unified was in the wake of 9/11, but since then we've seen divisions sharpen as news networks pummel us daily with negativity (because unfortunately human nature responds more sharply to negativity than positivity) to driver viewership. As a result we also see political parties that are dominated by culture war issues, and a lot more gatekeeping by these political parties around these social issues. Trump didn't cause this, but he did capitalize on it and was a catalyst for further division. This is why Trump being booted did not turn the temperature down as much as we hoped (it did tone it down quite a bit, though I think Trump being booted from social media probably was a bigger factor than Biden). And yes, outside influences from Russia and China are also manipulating people through social media. They love that we're at war with ourselves.
