It's no different than a member of the Squad saying something ridiculously liberal, getting backlash from the right, which amplifies her message and scores her points with the only people she wants to reach. The "general consensus" you're talking about is from the mainstream media. But everyone DeSantis cares about impressing hates the mainstream media. So, it's a net positive.
