Still true. T-Cells have to be exposed to the disease to be effective at fighting it, no?

You still have to get the disease to have the t-cells that remember how to fight it. Feel free to enlighten me. Or are you talking about a vaccine to distribute t-cells?

They can also be from exposure to similar viruses.  There isn't a requirement on actually having COVID.  As most things with this disease the data isn't conclusive on t-cells.  Anyway, the problem with all of these numbers games is that they are based on projections and assumptions. No one really knows what it takes at this point.

There have been studies that show that people who have not been exposed to COVID had similar Tcell activation to those who were exposed to COVID and recovered.  It is thought that this could be from exposure to other coronaviruses.

What role these Tcells in unexposed people may play in fighting off infection from COVID requires further examination.

Two vaccine were tested, rAD26-S and rAD5-S, both monkey adenovirus vector vaccines  (Astrazeneca is also testing a vector vaccine)

After two very small dosing studies the two vaccine were administered to a total of 50 volunteers.

Vaccine rAD26-S was administered on day zero and rAD5-S was administered on day 21

SARS-CoV-2 antibody was measured by ELISA (minimal if any cross reactivity with other coronavirus)  Antibody response was measured on day 0, 14, 21, 28, and 42

T-Cell response was also measured.

Side effect were minor but frequent.  There was a 100% seroconversion rate to the vaccine.  Cell mediated response was also detected in 100% of the recipients by day 28.

Note that this is an immunologic study, not a clinical study, it remains to be seen what percentage of future recipients will actually derive protection or amelioration of Covid-19 infection with this vaccine.

Vladimir Putin is releasing this vaccine for public use based on this study.

 

Astrazeneca has halted clinical testing on their vaccine because a recipient has developed transverse myelitis. (inflammatory condition in the spinal cord)  Detailed investigation of the case is underway to determine if there was a causal relationship between the vaccine and the inflammatory condition.

There have been numerous unsubstantiated reports of reinfection with Covid-19, most are felt to represent prolonged shedding of viral particles. Recently there have been several cases that have been investigated which are felt to be true examples of re-infection with Covid-19.

 

This report involves a case from Nevada

3/25 patient develops symptoms consistent with Covid-19

4/18 patient has a positive RT-PCR test for Covid-19

4/27 the patient is asymptomatic

5/9 and 5/26 RT-PCR tests are negative

5/28 the patient has onset of fever, headache cough, nausea and diarrhea

6/5 the patients symptoms worsen and he becomes hypoxic and is admitted to a hospital

Rt-PCR testing is positive for Covid-19

 

The patient underwent detailed investigation.  The authors report that the virus isolated from the first and second infections show sufficient differences to support reinfection rather than relapse.  This case stimulates more questions than it provides answers to of our immune system and Covid-19.  

 

CLINICAL OUTCOMES IN YOUNG US ADULTS HOSPITALIZED WITH COVID-19

Adults between the ages of 18-34 discharged between 4/1/20 and 6/30/20 were identified in the Premiere Healthcare Database including 1030 US Hospitals and Healthcare Systems.  Pregnant patients were excluded.

Of 780,969  patients aged 18-34 presenting to the system, 63,103 tested positive for Covid-19.  Five percent were admitted. (3222)  Mean age was 28.3, 58% were male, 57% were black or hispanic.  36.8% were obese, 24.5% were morbidly obese (BMI > 35), 18.5% were diabetic and 16.1% were hypertensive.

Twenty one percent required ICU treatment, 10% required mechanical ventilation, 2.7% died.

More than one comorbidity increased risks of Covid-19 to those of middle aged adults without comorbidities.

SAFE, SAFER, CONSEQUENCES

Almost daily we learn something new about the Covid-19 virus, and there is still much to be discovered.   Vaccine development is remarkable, it is just beginning for this virus and will significantly impact treatments in the future. It is humbling to read of the progress. Even with the deployment of an effective vaccine, "safe" will not be achieved for some time. The recognition of aerosol transmission as an important part of viral spread is significant.  For months I have talked of living safely, I should  have said safer.

Living safer will probably be necessary for another year or two.  Reports of multiple infections in one event, thought to be due to "super spreaders", (individuals thought to have very high viral counts in their respiratory secretions) were most likely the result of aerosol transmission. Indoor activities, given the reality of aerosol transmission, even with masks and distancing, can only be safer.  Without masks and distancing, they are plainly unsafe.  The more risk factors one has for severe consequences of Covid  infection, the greater the chance of adverse consequences.

This is not high academic cognitive function.  Mixed messages are excuses that have outlived their reality.  These types of decisions are made daily; speeding, smoking, unprotected sex and robbing banks all have simple to understand, potential, adverse consequences.

Moving forward, people will do as they wish, but need to be prepared for potential consequences of riskier behavior. I think that "opening" by fiat will have less impact on public response than pragmatic behavior.  There are a surprising number who are willing to accept greater risks and will most definitely prolong this pandemic.  I think it is very important for the public to understand that;

1.   it will take time to vaccinate large numbers of people, that the vaccinated will not have a "V" tattooed on their foreheads for easy identification.  

2.  we will not know who will be protected by vaccination

3.  we will not know how long protection that does accrue will last 

These three points, in addition to what is already common knowledge about transmission, should serve as the basis for decision making as it relates to safer behaviors.

I think in the UK a really difficult but necessary decision is needed. 

I think we have to return to normal life, whilst still doing some things like wearing a mask and keeping distance where possible. But I think the elderly and the vulnerable need to be asked to stay inside.

Let the economy start to recover because it can't carry on like we have been and with extra strict measures in place.

It’s a science issue, not a political issue, and it wouldn’t change anything about "blame” for the US response. Oh, and BTW, this is definitely not the only study that points to it being a product of a lab. That’s just false.
