Yeah, even if I didn't quite agree on everything with him (but I mostly did), he came across as very bright. At least he's thinking outside the box.
January 26, 20214 yr 1 hour ago, JohnSnowsHair said: right. there are a multitude of reasons that go into these things, and while race can certainly be a factor there are so many other factors that get missed because critical race theory dictates it's ALL about race. this is where the left loses so many. there are a lot of people who aren't racist, and are sympathetic to the idea that racism is still strong enough in this nation to create headwinds for blacks and other minorities that whites don't need to deal with. but you lose them when you start framing everything around this idea that race is the defining trait that dictates success in life, because that not only strips an entire race of people of their own agency (which is, in itself, pretty racist), it also presents an impossible choice where you either accept what they're saying or you're "part of the problem". that's not a way to have a dialog. Exactly. Let's talk about the real reasons that this is hitting African-American and Latino communities so hard. 1. Both groups are more likely to be overweight with complications like diabetes and hypertension. Now, you can build on this and talk about the lack of healthier food options in lower income communities, but there is also a personal responsibility aspect to it. Also, closing gyms was a disaster for these communities -- lower income communities don't have Pelotons and ellipticals in their homes. Most of the exacerbating issues are related more to income than race. Now, the liberals will argue that racism is why lower income groups have more minorities, but being black or Latino doesn't make you poor by default. There is a combination of cultural (poor diets) and systemic reasons for this. 2. Less access to quality healthcare. Now, this one kind of cracks me up, because the real healthcare catastrophe in this country is the rash of bankruptcies among hospitals in more rural locations. It's not about access to health facilities, it's that those remaining facilities are overrun because smaller hospitals keep closing. Those smaller hospitals close because of a bad patient mix with too many Medicaid and Medicare patients that are unprofitable. 3. They are more likely to be essential workers who can't work from home. 4. Multi-generational households. These are the issues to discuss as opposed to just screaming "racism."
January 26, 20214 yr Race should not be a factor in prioritizing vaccine roll outs. Unless there's been a definitive causal risk that's been established that I'm unaware of. Age, occupational risk, and pre-existing health risks should be the criteria. Now defining what exactly constitutes "pre-existing health risks" opens up pandora's box a bit and deciding what's "fair" vs what's the best approach from a public health policy standpoint won't necessarily be aligned. Reason being that an obese 50 year old is more likely to end up in the hospital than a physically fit 70 year old, if they both get infected, with all other factors being equal. So even though it's not "fair" to prioritize tubby over gramps, it's more pragmatic to do so if your goal is to stem the flow of covid patients from occupying hospital beds. That being said, using weight alone isn't as objective as age, since muscle mass is quite dense, so roid popping meatheads may be considered obese even though their fitness level is far better and would have a low likelihood of needing hospitalization. So ideally, I would say some sort of official classification would be required for the pre-existing health category (e.g. a prescription or a doctor's note.)

There is a combination of cultural (poor diets) and systemic reasons for this. This is an interesting one for me because the concept and impact of "food deserts" is very real for urban communities. So sussing out the aspects of diet that are truly cultural vs aspects that have developed in communities out of necessity is really difficult. One of the most Fed up thing I used to see in Philadelphia was kids who would say their favorite food was "Chi Chi", which is basically prison chili made from all the junky crap you can find at a Bodega. That being said you can't ignore the truly cultural aspects of it either. Latino and to a lesser extent Portuguese immigrants I see nowadays are disproportionately OBSESSED with their child's weight. I've seen obese kids with mothers worried about them being too skinny.

You can pull it back and say the cultural aspects, especially in the African-American community, are a result of past discrimination. Soul food is a function of making use of the parts of the animals no one else wanted (e.g., pig's feet). Well, to make that taste good, you had to make it super unhealthy. And that becomes part of the culture. People just can't have nuanced discussions with multiple facets. It just has to be "OMG RACISM!"

I think the people that go immediately to racism, and the people who absolutely refuse to acknowledge that past discrimination has very real effects on current race disparities basically grind any meaningful/productive conversation to a halt.

January 26, 20214 yr Whelp was at an outdoor bday party last Saturday for an 8 year old, the dad host just told us he has covid. He started feeling sick on Sunday and got test results today. I wore a mask the whole time and was outside and did talk to him for like 10 minutes I guess and he handed me a plate at one point. Hoping I’m in the clear but this sucks.

Wife is pregnant and certainly don’t want to deal with this. Certainly the last people we will be seeing until vaccination. I didn’t even want to go to this thing my wife is the one that knows them.

Ugh all this for a kids party they are the worse lol. All kidding aside I hope you dodged a bullet. I actually went to a pub for the first time since last March and I was nervous as hell about it. I needed to get out and do something I couldn't take it anymore. The place seemed clean and safe and there was a ton of space between other people eating. I still was paranoid as hell a few days after wondering if I would get sick. That was my one and only adventure I'm staying the hell in until I can get the vaccine

That Wednesday is when they closed down everything (schools and whatnot) so we had to cancel that party. He’s asking if he can have a party this year, but we told him it’s extremely unlikely. He’s really bummed about it. As much as we’d like to have a party, what’s the point of risking it and making people uncomfortable. I know I wouldn’t want to go to a party and would feel weird being there. Unless you rented like an entire movie theater and really spread people out, or something similar, I can’t imagine doing or going to a party.

Only reason we were somewhat comfortable going is because it was all outside.
