It's a few things:

1. Newsom gave in and lifted restrictions too early. People got a false sense of security from the strong numbers at the beginning. Lifting the restrictions without adequate testing was a debacle.

2. Latinos tend to live in multi-generational households and multi-resident dwellings. This accelerated spread as many of the "essential" jobs in CA (food prep and delivery, construction, etc.) are done predominantly by Latinos.

3. Once the French Laundry thing happened, CA residents were basically done with this.

What French Laundry thing?

Its a michelin star restaurant where the gov was eating with lobbyists while everyone else was banned from going to restaurants in groups

Had a similar incident happen here with the Ontario Finance Minister. He left for a vacation in St. Barts before Christmas and got busted between Christmas and New Years when hw flew home and resigned.

The thing is.... he took pictures of himself at some political event and of him beside his fireplace before he left and then posted them on Twitter while he was away to make it appear that he was still at home.

He left on like Dec 11th

You can't keep up with a virus if you need to adjust the vaccines and then have months of tests.......Damn I was going to try and be more positive -_-

I was just referencing Stephen King's book "The Stand".

One of them will get us eventually.

Maybe a pandemic will wipe us all out, but actively helping it along seems incredibly stupid.

That hypocrisy during a pandemic is ok, but don't post a fake meme or you'll go to jail.

Don't forget Nancy Pelosi going to a private salon with no mask on, caught on camera...then blamed the salon owner that she was set up.

Or the restaurant that wasn't allowed to have outdoor seating but the craft tent next door for Hollywood movie crew was allowed.

A lady the other day when asked if she has a mask to put on said " I have a medical condition for 2 weeks" whatever the hell that means.

Finally managed to get my mom and dad scheduled. Here in FL the system is a mess. Was logged in the second the page refreshed and was allowing registration. Tried 7 or 8 times over the last few weeks but finally managed to get them scheduled by registering in a larger county than the one they live in.

It’s Florida. Plenty of dumb to go around. I’d guess in my town about 75% are wearing masks now which is actually an improvement over how many did months ago. To be fair, where I live people still have trump flags and upside down American flags on their pickup trucks. Now that the election is over seeing the flags makes me smile. This weekend I saw one that had me and my son laughing our asses off. Said "F*** Biden, Not my President”

I've been teaching in a 4-day school week (Weds. are for virtual office hours) hybrid environment since September, except for a two-month shutdown from Nov.-Jan. when the second wave took off. My school has been very conscious of following mitigation guidelines, like performing contact tracing, and isolating staff/students who have tested positive or been exposed, and even doing building-wide shutdowns when cases have spread too much. I'm grateful for their conscientious approach and feel safe here. However, I know that many districts are not being so careful. For us, I feel that we might be able to get through the rest of the year staying hybrid.

I'm fairly certain these studies have been conducted in hybrid learning environments. My takeaway, and what seems to be ignored in reports of low transmission in schools, is that schools can safely reopen in a hybrid environment if they strictly adhere to the guidances. A big reason why transmission has been low in schools is because of hybrid teaching, strict mask wearing, sanitizing, social distancing, etc. occurring more reliably than in the general population. More or less, the contingencies are working, and schools can operate safely if they are strictly adhered to. This does not mean that it is safe yet for schools to fully reopen and become lax on preventive measures.

@toolg, dude, this is insane. I really hope he's ok and that this doesn't permanently damage his voice. Luckily I got to catch them in Philly last November. I was supposed to see them again in May, but then COVID happened.

Maynard James Keenan Recovering from Second Bout with COVID-19

Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan is recovering from his second bout with coronavirus.

Keenan first contracted COVID-19 in February while touring with Tool in Australia and New Zealand. Months later, he was still dealing with the residual effects, including lung damage and daily coughing fits.

Unfortunately, Keenan’s second battle with COVID was even more harrowing. "Ugly, ugly. Couldn’t breathe. I could barely put two words together without going into a coughing fit that, you know? It ended up kind of also progressing into pneumonia,” Keenan told Apple Music’s Strombo in an interview on Wednesday (via Billboard).

By early December, Keenan ended up in the ER. "If stayed in the hospital, they said, ‘Okay, we can keep you here, but you’re fighting 12 other people for a bed and a ventilator we don’t have, so what do you want to do?’” Keenan recalled.

"There’s nothing you can do other than treat the symptom, so for a real cough medicine, not the crap over-the-counter and then like an inhaler, and some antibiotics to fight the pneumonia and strap the f— in,” he added.

Following his initial battle with COVID, Keenan blasted "arrogant” Americans who willfully ignore public health guidelines. "I knew what I went through and I know what I’m still going through, so I would recommend that you take this seriously, but I feel like that’s just going to fall on deaf ears,” he said. "It’s just going to be a polarized, politicized statement, so it’s pointless. In that case, I’m just going to worry about keeping my family safe and keeping my friends safe.”

For the sake of Keenan and everyone else, please mask up. Better yet, considering picking up one of our custom face masks as a portion of proceeds go to supporting independent musicians impacted by the pandemic.

Damn. They already either don't play a few songs in concert that strain his vocals (Most notably Ticks & Leeches) or he alters his vocals on some of the more difficult songs to sing live (pretty much anything off of Opiate or Undertow, the scream in The Grudge, etc). I couldn't believe they were playing Part of Me on their 2019 tour.

Hopefully he's alright, but I wouldn't be shocked if his voice is pooched for a while.

Dagens Nyheter asks: Now 276,000 Swedes have received their first vaccine dose. According to the Medical Products Agency, there are 550 suspected side effects linked to Pfizer's vaccine. 50 people who received the vaccine have died. Are these normal numbers?

- The Medical Products Agency must answer that, says Anders Tegnell, state epidemiologist at the Swedish Public Health Agency.

Damn, 50 deaths and 550 with side effects in Sweden out of 276K vaccine doses. Seems high.

Well, being that it's Sweden, they were probably administering doses like this:

Guess it depends on how old and in what health those 50 were in when getting the shot.

People over 65 with high risk and frontline medical workers are the only people getting vaccines over here so far.

Right, but I mean were the deaths more people in their 80s-90s or people closer to 65. If they were mostly extremely old people in nursing homes the 50 number may not be that unusual.

That’s the group. You had to be in a home or in some sort of care situation in your own home. My 85 year old mother in law can schedule one now for a shot in a few weeks time. She hasn’t been able to get one yet as she doesn’t have a special care situation at this point.

Oh no, there were people at the grocery store not wearing masks in Florida! This story is so big it belongs on the national news! I guess this is what networks have been reduced to now that they can't whine about Trump for hours on end. Pathetic.

Domestic terrorists engaged in attempted mass murder is a major news story.
