Hmm.  Feels like we've finally cut the cord.  Floating out in the ether. Anger at the faceless dismissal and marginalization of it's own fans by PE.com. But extreme gratitude for guys l

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Absolutely do not let your herbs flower.  As soon as flowers show up, cut them back.   Been fighting the flowers on my Cilantro the last couple of weeks.  Your suggestion on cutting it back is absolutely correct.  At the end of the season, I let them flower because some self seed for the next year. Worked in my planters.  I expect it will work in the herb garden.

Yup.  Cilantro hate hot weather, so they want to flower fast.   I'll be starting some new cilantro soon, hopefully that will come on to take over when the current stuff is beyond hope of stopping it.  That's the best part about herbs though.  You can get TONS of seeds for about half the price of a few sprigs in the grocery store.  Herbs are one of the most cost effective things to grow for yourself, not to mention that truly 'fresh herbs' are about 10x more flavorful and aromatic than the stuff that's sold in the stores.

That's a fairly stark contrast.  Did you add any fresh compost, any fertilizer or anything when you planted?   I'd suggest side dressing with compost, or a little added fertilizer - roughly in a ring about 6 inches from the stem around the base, watered in.   This is best as compost tea, or diluted stuff.  Slow release fertilizer like osmocote is good too.

That looks like it might be due to insect damage.  Squash bugs can lead to yellowing and browning leaves.  They hang out under the leaves, so you need to check the undersides.  Google squash bugs to see the eggs, larvae and adults.  They can be picked off by hand.  There's no real solution besides that.  It doesn't look like a watering issue or cucumber beetles.  They usually put holes in the leaves more than turn them brown.  Squash vine borer is also a potential problem, but that doesn't seem to fit here either.  They bore into the vine right around where it meets the ground and kills the whole plant from there.

We always used a bucket of soapy water when we picked bugs and the larvae and eggs in my mom’s garden.  She also would put a Castile soap and water mixture in a spray bottle and spray the undersides of leaves. IIRC, Castile soap is organic.

Yup, I use a nice mix of Peat, compost tea, and generic pellet fertilizer when planting all my stuff. They all got the same treatment at install, top dressed with mulch, the same watering schedule, 10' away so same sunlight...its a Columbo Mystery ..

edit, also never had any vegetables planted in that specific location before so maybe something in the soil beforehand??

I have enough viable plants as is so willing to let this play out, waiting for it to get up and walk away some night...

Yeah, I use the soapy water for disposal, but I've never used it on my plants.  I do use a herbicidal soap in some areas around the garden.   I'm not a big 'organic' guy, but I do love just growing and picking.   If I forget to rinse, so be it.  🙂   I'm also ok with some 'bad' bugs, as they provide the food for the 'good' bugs to feed on, which I want to encourage.  I love seeing lady bugs, praying mantis, etc. in my garden, and wouldn't want to add anything that would be potentially harmful to them.   But, I'm just a big softie!   So, I try to add as few chemicals as possible to my garden, especially above ground.   Underground, I used to use the commerical fertilizers, specifically 10-10-10... but have moved away from that in recent years.  Something tells me that that stuff, while good for the plants, is likely bad for the worms.

Gardening is a constant learning experience.  It could be something as simple as the shrubs on either side of it.  Some plants work and play well together better than others.   Learning about companion planting is a lot of interesting stuff.

If the cilantro tries to flower again, I am going to let it go to seed.  I have a couple of younger plants from seeds and if need be, I can grab a plant at the grocery store.  I am currently letting my dill flower and seed but I don’t use a lot of dill anyway. With Cilantro I always have some young growing.

Letting my mature catnip go to seed because it’s replacement is now about five inches tall. If you grow catnip do it in planters and when the go to seed get them away from lawns and other planters because, like mint, it spreads like a demon possessed.

Yup.   micro-ecosystems exist in the garden.   That soil right there might be extra  acidic, might have had some pesticides dumped there, herbicides, who knows.  Its impossible to know the full history of the ground we are growing on, which is one reason that raised beds are so favored by some folks... you bury the old (good or bad) and essentially have a fresh slate to build on.

This year I stripped down the garden and put fresh mushroom soil on top.  That's the top 6 inches or so, and the rest got tilled under, so that's where the deeper roots are sitting.

Cilantro is the bane of my existence.  I can get all the other ones before they flower but for some reason the Cilantro is fighting me tooth and nail.

Suggestion for everyone out there growing herbs: Thai Basil.  It grows almost as easily/abundantly as regular basil but with a really nice and very different flavor profile.

Try to grow the cilantro under something.  It hates heat... ironically.   Same as peppers... believe it or not.

I wonder if it's Dimitri Patterson or Jamar Chaney

I hate when people do this, say what it is or say nothing at all, this is just begging for attention. And watch it'll be something stupid like Peters returning

It’s Peters

Baldy was at that o-line summit, which is probably where he heard the whispers from Lane or someone

That wouldn’t be big news. That’d be disappointing.

I bought a full flat of tomato plants, mixed varieties, cheaper than individually, and had no home for that last dude so just put him in a spot in the flower bed. He's actually an orphan then, and this is him pouting...

This is a great observation.

Peters returning to the starting LT spot would be disappointing to say the least. Sink or swim with Dillard.

Put Peters on Staff, if he'd have that.

They told Lane to get ready to do 1v1s with Clowney. It makes sense.
