I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Agreed completely, but I'd also argue that Mexico was not innocent in their interactions with Texas...

Stephen F. Austin would agree with that.

Says d line better. I agree

Says LB is worse- because of loss of Bradham and KGH,I disagree. Also interesting that eagles only have 2% of the cap devoted to LB.

Says Corner is better. I agree.

Says Safety is worse because of loss of Jenkins, i disagree.

What do yall think?

Why do you feel that D line is better?

I can give him a pass based on what he had to work with, including Jenkins, but I really hope they move away from so much Cover 3.  IIRC Manuel ran a lot of Zone at Atlanta.  Cover 2 and Cover 3.  I really hope with Slay they play more Cover 1. We’ll see.

Cover 1 was our second most used coverage last year and we were at our best in man coverage statistically. I suspect the reason you trade for Slay is for that very reason.

Despite naming a major city after him, Sam Houston gets short shrift in Texas history, compared to say the "heroes" of the Alamo, who disregarded his orders, as did the group that got itself slaughtered at Goliad.

Ole Sam was a drunk, an Indian lover, etc., and lacked the macho quality of getting killed to show off his courage, instead he actually fought that war to win. He knew his rag tag army needed time to be trained and organized, and that getting Santa Anna to overextend his reach would eventually provide an opportunity. But there's nothing heroic about a strategic retreat. Santa Anna's incompetence gave Houston his shot, but even after the battle of San Jacinto, there were 4,000 Mexican troops left in Texas - but spread over a wide area, bogged down by spring rains. Texas independence was primarily a product of better rifles and Santa Anna's incompetence.

And to be truthful he kind of pulled a Pearl Harbor on Santa Ana at San Jacinto.  Of course, one could say the same about Washington at Trenton.

I think Safety is close to a wash.  Parks is an underrated addition. K'avon Wallace is promising but Safety isn't usually a role players come in and just excel especially given the role Jenkins had.  I mean Jenkins was altering his role based on the play.  He was a smart player.  I agree on LB.  Bradham is a loss but it's interesting he is still on the market.  I would hope they would consider bringing him back.

Saw an article in the Athletic titled Can Drew Jones Make the Next Leap.  Is it wrong that my immediate thought was, if he can find a short pier.

Our third safety should be better, but unless we’re changing the SS role, I don’t see how we’re better there.

Hargrave is an upgrade over an oft injured jernigan and i dont consider curry to be much of a loss that cant be overcome.

I think Mills will do fine in jenkins role, mills was employed last year in some games all over the secondary.

I think fran duffy had a video of mills against the Pats where mills moved all over.

Mills also played safety in college so its not totally foreign to him and its not like Jenkins was all pro last year, he had an off year for him.

Congrats on the green light from the wife!  That’s 90% of the battle!

I was going to buy a similar grill and debated it for months.   But I realized that I would need to move it out of my covered patio area every time I used it to prevent the ceiling of the patio from getting smoke damage.  Those grills are pretty heavy and it’s just not something that should be moved around every time you grill.

So I decided to go with the classic....

22 inch Classic Weber Kettle grill and I’m really enjoying it.   I never owned one but my dad did when we were growing up.  I never realized how hot they get, especially when using lump hardwood charcoal.  I’ve never owned either a charcoal or gas grill that gets as hot as this.   Seers 1 inch thick steaks a perfect medium in about 7-8 minutes, 4 minutes per side.

I’ve owned gas grills 3x as expensive and this one beats them all....for taste, seering ability, and overall grilling experience.  Not to mention the fact that if I remember correctly, my Dad’s must have lasted a good 10 years without rusting...and that’s a rarity nowadays.  They still make these Webers in the US and back them with a 10 year warranty, which is unheard of nowadays for grills.   If you change your mind and decide to go the simple route, I highly recommend one, you pretty much can’t go wrong.   I do miss the side tables that gas grills have so I ordered myself a nice 6 foot black folding table to set the food up.  I got the table and the grill for less than $200.  Can’t beat it.

Good choice.  I've always grilled with charcoal.  I had this exact Weber kettle for 15 years.  No rust on the shell.  Eventually the shaker rusted and broke (my fault I got lazy and wasn't covering it for a couple years).  My dad had one that was 20 years old before it rusted around the leg welds.  My brother took his and mine and cannibalized them for parts and converted it into a smoker.  Needless to say wife surprised me on Christmas this year with this...

Solak said he was pretty bad in that role in the NE game.

Well what the hell does Solak know his opinion is totally contradicting my opinion which i will express through angry words in an attempt to validate my and invalidate his opinion😉😊

Mine, too.  Probably why she got me one for Christmas and why she married me.  I grilled for her on our second date and she was hooked.  I'm out there grilling in the dead of winter all the time.  Think she's just using me for my grilling abilities.

I am not sure that moving on from Jenkins was not a good move.  He was a beast in the number of tackles he made and that helped the run game. But he had slipped a lot in coverage.  Frankly, I think Mills, Parks and Wallace will all be better in coverage and I am not convinced they lose that much in tackling or savvy.

I think Bradham went seriously downhill after 2017.  I am real encouraged about Edwards play. He has such great instincts.  Learning that Gerry played all year with a torn core muscle is actually encouraging.  I suspect that impacted at least some of his missed tackles.  I really liked the Riley trade.  He is kind of like D. Hall in that he was drafted high (3rd) but was green. (Sound like another Eagle?). Hall seemed to progress last summer.  Well that’s this summer for Riley.  That’s probably the starters.  Depth isn’t bad, best of two draft choices, Singleton and Brown. Singleton did well on STs. But I think he has to show he can be a reliable backup to make the team.  I would love to see him step up to play back up MIKE and maybe some sort of Ike Reese role. Frankly, Brown can’t cover which is bad for a player with his speed.  I thought he was mainly a ST signing.  Now Schwartz likes to keep his LBs clean which should help Singleton, Brown and Taylor.  Taylor does seem to have some natural instincts. He is clay to be molded and Frajole seems to have a knack for that. Good luck with that for Bradley. He is said to have good work ethic and we do need someone to back up Edwards if Singleton can’t. Wild card is Olson.  He doesn’t look as slow as his forty on tape but he isn’t like Edwards who looks like a 4.6 player on tape because he has already taken two steps towards the play before other players have started. Yeah, I loved the Edwards signing.  If we substitute Edwards for Thorson in last year’s draft, it looks pretty good.

This is exactly what it is. Maybe HE was sheltered up in northeastern PA.  I lived in the south for half my long life.  None of the buildings named after rebel leaders and the statues were built when there were very many people alive that fought for the South.  Never in any of my classes did anyone ever point to a statue and say learn and never do these things. Rather they celebrated the oppression and defiantly changed the narrative enough to argue somehow the conflict between the states was not about slavery.  Read each state’s declaration of secession and tell me that. Sure it was about states rights, a states right to have slavery.

Most of these monuments were built between the 1900s and the 1920s. For the most part they were built from the 1890s to the 1950s.  Know what they don’t teach you in history about what was also going on during that same period?  Lynchings.  Over 600 of them in Texas.  Know what else they don’t talk about in school?  Voter suppression as the states came out of Reconstruction by groups like the White League and the Red Shirts, ironically at least to me, against Republicans.  Once the Democrats won the states’ legislatures back they passed new Constitutions. Shortly thereafter, as they are erecting these monuments they are also passing Jim Crow laws.  Those laws required segregation, oppressed voting and even had provisions like sundown laws.  Think those monuments bring to mind that in the South?  Nah.  More like my high school, named after Robert E. Lee and built in the late fifties. Team, the Generals with band and dance team uniforms that look like a Confederate general’s. Colors, grey and gold. Think that had many of my classmates focused on learning from history?

Here is a fact you don’t see in the Alamo movies. Texans are proud of winning their war for independence from Mexico. Know what they don’t focus on as much as they should in school?  Mexico wanted to end the practice of slavery and the Texans wanted no part of it so they revolted.

Excellent. Would add that Jim Bowie was a big-time slave trader.

:offtopic:

So I was out getting some fence parts the other day and was driving behind a pickup from Maryland that had an American flag on a pole stuck in the side bed.  It was disgraceful.  The stripes adjacent to the star field were gone. The rest were in tatters. The star field was frayed.  Is this supposed to be patriotic?  When I pulled behind him at a light I almost put on my mask and got out of my car to offer to buy his flag from him for the cost of a new one so I could properly dispose of it.
