No Mas you are missing it all it seems.  Get rid of a preseason game to add a real game. That evens out. Just gets rid of a BS pretend game.  As a fan, who wants the fourth preseason game over the 17th regular season game? Playoffs are the same length. Just add two more games on the opening weekend of the playoffs. Seems all positive to me.

Ham.. see to you the season must start with that first preseason game in August right?

To me it starts with regular season game 1 after Labor day.  It's 16 games not 20 like in your mind. You know why? Because a lot of REAL PLAYERS, don't even play a snap in August.  The scores don't count.

So to me, it's not 20 games with a swap of any preseason or regular season.   They are just making my season longer. And also adding another playoff team at the bottom of the list...the 7th best in each conference.

So the NFL absolutely does not agree with me.   But I am curious... you said the top teams would have battled it out week 18 last year?  I'd love explanation of why the 14-2 Ravens would have had to battle it out week 18?

VaBeachEagle archived some old school content. I went back to the summer before we won our SB. Shocker but FL was talking about finally having receivers to take the top off the defense. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Ravens were the only top team not battling. KC and the Pats would have been. Niners, Pack and Saints would have been.

7th best in each conference isn’t necessarily true. The fourth best division winner could be worse than the third wild card.

Not sure how all the exact timing works out for the scheduling. But it could work out pretty much the same. Exit the fourth preseason game and start the first real game a week earlier. Not sure how they actually are implementing everything schedule wise. But it could just bump up the start one week and end the same dates. I’m not that particular. Just love me some football. An extra game is just more football. If it means the Super Bowl is a week later...so be it...doesn’t really matter to me any. But they could end at the same time.

two extra playoff games. Isn’t that all good. Do you really need the two seed to have a bye? You want all those top notch players taking a week off instead of playing playoff football?

I'm good with how it is. We shall see how it goes.  4 playoff games is enough. I mean... should we make it top 8 and forget the bye week?

Because this is where it is leading to. The next step...18 game season with 8 playoff teams in each conference.  That is the next CBA, pretty much guaranteed.  They can cut down the practices again..  and bump the minimal salary again, except notice one thing now..

The trend with the bigger rosters.. more minimum wage players to manipulate for the owners.

Gotta love that battle when the 6-11 teams are still mathematically alive come week 18 if everything falls their way like it did for us the last day of 2008.

This is my issue with the whole thing. I see where it's going. To you,  it's the Rams and the Steelers getting a chance to play in the playoffs...to me I see big picture here.  They are heading towards NBA and NHL style. Watered down regular season.

While I too love football... I don't love "any kind of football " I like when it's played at the highest level.  It's trending in the opposite direction here.

It's a lot to want to change  just because of b@tching about the Patriots getting bye weeks.  That was done last year. No more bye weeks for them.

And like I said..  in your mind NE and KC would have " battled it out"  ... what if one team played a scrub team?  SF, GB and Saints would have battled it out?  What if the team with the tiebreaker played a scrub team?   And you keep skipping Baltimore another week to sit, Eagles, Minnesota, Seattle, Tennessee, Houston and Buffalo not needing to play?

Why, so the Jets and Bears could have had a chance?  We keep watering it down.  Step 1 this year. Step 2 with 17 games..  final steps 18 games and 8 playoff teams ..  and maybe players will have to sit out a game.. that would awesome to see 70 man rosters and 4th string guys I there (Without injuries) in a game that counts in December.  Great stuff!

That is what preseason is for.. for the fans obsessed with seeing borderline NFL players play.  That doesn't belong towards the end of a playoff race without a team sustaining injuries.  It was necessity last year that we pulled WRs off the street, I don't want it to be that way all the time. I prefer to see the best players play all the time when it counts.  It should count starting game 1 of the regular season.

I like out RBs but they're all the same style of back. It'd be nice to have a bruiser available

The big picture is and was LA would have been in the playoffs. And two extra playoff games means nice extra revenue from tv contracts. Fourth preseason game was  only for nonNFL players mostly. Fans like this move because season ticket holders were forced to pay for the preseason and it gives them an extra chance for them to make the playoffs. If not make the playoffs more fanbases are in it longer. I don’t see them adding anymore teams to the postseason. I could see the league expanding again and adding more teams however.

The league doesn’t care about more minimum wage players but so much. They set their split between the owners and players. They have the players a little bigger piece of the pie. But they really upped the pie as a whole in doing it. Extra regular season week and two extra playoff games ...cha ching.

Lord, No Mas, already jumping right past 14 playoff teams to 16 playoff teams. You are going into sky is falling mode here a little too much. I don’t think this part is happening. Relax...the two seed actually has to play week one of the playoffs...not a bad thing....nothing but a more fair playing field. Big props to the one seed for earning the perks. We saw the flaw in the system that the Pats exposed. A weak division and a top team can get a massive advantage. They cut out that loop hole. Gotta earn the trip to the SB now.

I don't think any teams should get a bye.......that's bullsh--.  You make the playoffs or you don't.  You earn homefield advantage, that's it.  The NFL is a grind and at that point in the season, every team is banged up.....  In a league where injuries, bad calls, bad scheduling or a crazy bounce, one or two games could make a big difference.  But to give a team home field advantage AND a week off is simply stacking the deck for the favorites.

They should have gone to 8 playoffs teams per conference.  Division winners and then the next 4 best records.....then they get seeded by record.  The best record plays the worst and so on.

3 weeks of fair playoff football and then the super bowl.  To win a super bowl, you need to win 4 straight games.  Earning it.

Seems like you are minimizing the regular season there Birdman. I like the extra incentive to earn that top seed and get a bye.

Welcome to the board birdman. Vermont's a few hrs away from us on the cape - a whole other country! Nice state, brutal winters.

Always liked the idea of div winners then the next best and no, no extra week off. Part of the reason I'd like alle the byes over 2 weeks mid season or for 2 byes same deal at each 3rd of the season. Wk 4 byes make for a brutal rest of season, whereas teams getting w/ late byes can get ready for a playoff push.

Have to disagree Ham. Why should the leading team get an unfair advantage late in the season? Takes away from parity. They already get home field advantage, that's a good reward and enough of an edge.

No guarantee Clement makes it, going to be a fun position to keep an eye on;

1 - Miles Sanders

2 - Boston Scott

3 - Corey Clement

4 - Elijah Holyfield

5 - Michael Warren

6 - Adrian Killins

Plus the article on BGN says it sounds like we're looking to add a veteran RB

IDK at what point does one become a "veteran"?

It's scheduling, and besides by having the best record they EARNED some type of "prize".And that is the prize. If you are jealous about another team getting it,then you have to go out and get the best record.Sadly some divisions(cough cough) insure one team gets it annually. That team is located in the NE US.Lets hope they see some competition(finally) instead of a shoe in to the playoffs doing 1/2 of what other teams have to

The bye is to let the wildcards play to see who else gets in.If you have 9 teams,no way can you have 5 games

Home field advantage AND an extra week off is likewinning the lottery and them giving you extra money for winning. Home field advantage IS the prize, it's huge advantage
