I know you’re going to be spiking the football all day today, and that’s cute.

Not spiking any footballs. I know one game doesn't mean much and that Hurts could be terrible next week. But it also doesn't make sense to misrepresent the WFT defense. Their offense was clearly bad, but their defense has a lot of talent and we blew their doors off. At least for one week we can all feel good about the offense, right?

From my understanding. "balls to the wall" originated in WWII aircraft: exceeding normal engine limits by moving the throttle into WEP (War Emergency Power).

Further research was required. Seems Mortimer is correct...and @mattwill as well.

The expression comes from the world of military aviation. In many planes, control sticks are topped with a ball-shaped grip. One such control is the throttle—to get maximum power you push it all the way forward, to the front of the cockpit, or firewall (so-called because it prevents an engine fire from reaching the rest of the plane). Another control is the joystick—pushing it forward sends a plane into a dive. So, literally pushing the balls to the (fire)wall would put a plane into a maximum-speed dive, and figuratively going balls to the wall is doing something all-out, with maximum effort. The phrase is essentially the aeronautical equivalent of the automotive "pedal to the metal.”

This makes sense, see WW2 era throttle control below.

Which makes 100% sense... especially for Naval dive bombers... who by going 'balls to the wall' limited the time they'd be a target as they completed their bombing runs... BUT, would also make pulling out after unloading their payload more difficult.

Late take on this:

The throw to Ward in the EZ for the TD was the best throw I have ever witnessed FROM HURTS.  STill doesn't make him a starting NFL QB. I watched Foles make that same play in one of his first six starts throwing to Maclin

There seems to be a lot of sexual innuendo in this post, but I fear I'm not smart enough to tease it out

And when you watch it, the play was made by Ward.  That was an unreal catch.

Not intentionally.  Don't hurt yourself.

Too late

Minshew was 20-25 and a lot of people shrugged their shoulders.

Hurts was 20-26 and he's amazing.

I'm no Hurts fan, but if he can build on yesterday and finish the season strong I'm willing to give him another year.  Obviously the fumble was bad yesterday and the throws into double coverage but he had a lot of positives as well.

And the Jets are better then Washington practice squad.

Ok. So Thursday night football means something for us. Go Titans!

I think the eagles will be significantly interested in Beavers from Cincinnati. They showed an affinity for drafting hybrid players last year. One was the LB/S, but two others were DE/LB hybrids. Beavers is one such guy, however hes not a project at both positions. He is actually a good LB. On the TDN scouting report, he is compared to Zaven Collins from last years draft who a ton of people were high on. He plays LB with that kind of size and moves adequately for the position.

Im not sure if he will test as well. But if he does, hes going to be a big riser. Right now, the projection seems to be 3rd round.

Is there anything you need to tell us (and maybe the authorities) with those scales in your front room? 😉

Are Maddox and Goedert dating?

The thought did cross my mind (not that there is an issue with it though)

As for the game, it was funny reading some of the comments on here. We saw Hurts ceiling yesterday; can run, can pass to limited targets but leaves a lot on the field. But I am pleased for the coaches that the penny has dropped for them and they look like a pro outfit now.  Less coaching brain farts

Not to defend Hurts, but Washington defense> Jets defense. Even with the injuries.

One of my biggest gripes continues to be the lack of catches for DeVonta Smith.  He has 53 catches on the year as our clear #1 WR.  That's good for 48th in the NFL.  3 RB have more catches than him.  We've seen that he clearly knows how to get open and can make circus catches.  I said early in the week that I wanted them to do whatever they could to force the ball to him.  Last night there was a screen pass to Greg Ward...DeVonta Smith was the lead blocker.  Ward ended up with positive yards which is great but that's the kind of play call I'd like to see called for Smith.  A play where it's one step and boom, give it to him.

FWIW:

Smith, 53 catches 741 yards 4 TD

Goedert 48 catches 731 yards 4 TD

On the subject of draft prospects, there are a few WRs that represent amazing value hard to pass on. Due to injury. Which you know Howie loves.

Metchie

Pickens

Roberson Jr

Justyn Ross

Dontay Demus Jr

and then, not in the injury category but unexplicably low in rankings- Charleston Rambo.

Id expect one of those guys to be an eagle.  Most of them have WR1 talent. Demus is like a prototype but he had one of the ugliest knee injuries I have seen. It made me squirm, and I was saying Oh NO! OH NO! out loud, and it just kept getting worse.

well nm. I just went to look if I could find anything on Demus's rehab and apparently a few days ago he announced he is returning to Maryland for his senior season.

Nah... give credit where credit is due.   Hurts put the ball in a tight window where only his guy could make a play on it.  And Ward made a play on it.   Great play by both.  Defender did everything he could, but couldn't stop it.  Nice to see a situation like that work in the Eagles' favor.

Charleston Rambo will be this years Van Jefferson.

Hurts played slightly better than I expected, but Washington was damn near incompetent and we handed them almost all their points.  Against a legit defense that game might not have turned around

Minshews start was much, much cleaner than Hurts last night.   IMO we're walking into damn near worst case scenario with the team carrying Hurts to the playoffs.

I'm pretty sure he's on track for another year anyway.   Then again, yesterday also works in the Eagles' favor of trying to flip him to recoup losses in a trade for a vet QB... or to include in a trade for a vet QB.

I am not sold on Hurts being the guy he was last night consistently... mainly because Washingteam didn't practice before hand, guys were coming back from Covid and may or may not have been dealing with post-Covid fatigue.  Lots of variables there.   All that said, he did what he was supposed to do... go out and dictate to their defense.  The better test will be when the meet again on Jan 2.  Washingteam should be recovered by then, and we'll see if Hurts can do that again.   We'll also see how he handles the Giants' defense that completely stymied him last time.
