Personally, I love that Hurts is throwing some contested balls. That ball to Goedert was placed where Goedert could go and get it, so was the one to Smith. He is getting to know his receivers and pulling the trigger, albeit sometimes a bit late. I think those are just the sort of throws we want to see from Hurts.  I am not suggesting recklessness, but calculated risk as the latter wins in the NFL.

Bullcrap. The ball was thrown up eli style and goedert wrestled it out of the defenders hands. Not taking away from Hurts good day but that play wasn't spectacular on his end

He also had Tyree Jackson wide open deep over the middle.

He played ok, I mean the eagles still had over 200 yards rushing with Opeta an Herbig as the starting guards.

Opeta had a bad play here and there but overall thought he played well enough

Thought Herbig played well

When Mailata Kelce or Johnson are on either side of you makes ones job a bit easier.

Those 3 guys are really really good.

1 hour ago, austinfan said:

Those three guys are unreal athletes.

Mailata is similar to Peters in that you don't see guys that big who can move that well.

Lane blew the combine away and is uber-athletic.

And Kelce is a freak of nature, linemen simply shouldn't able to run that fast.

When you have Dickerson in there, it's a unit that's almost impossible to stop. If Brooks ever gets healthy, DL will be going "no mas" by the fourth quarter.

Though give Herbig (and Stoutland) credit, he's much improved (and smaller) than last season. Opeta is athletic and powerful on a straight line but needs work on his lateral agility, and that gets exposed pass blocking.

Opeta is listed at 6'4" and 305 on the roster, but to my eyes he looked considerably bigger (and more powerful) than that last night.  His size and power was my biggest take away from his play last night.  I agree with @Utebird that there was the occasional bad play, but that overall he played well.  I also agree with the bolded part of @austinfan 's assessment, and given the gameplan that Sirianni chose last night, Opeta's strengths were accentuated and his (relative) weaknesses were minimized.

Leading up to the game I personally was more in favor of starting Toth rather than Opeta.  It really is a pleasure to think that our 12th and 13th O-linemen are as good as Opeta and Toth are.

I look forward to hearing what @justrelax has to say about the O-line play last night.

Would agree with that first statement. BLOG loves Sweat, to me he’s JAG. We have to do better there.

I think we just have to be realistic about what he is.  He is a good depth guy, and I'm happy we were able to lock him up for what might be considered cheap (cheap for a pass rusher at least), but we need some serious 1st round talent at EDGE yesterday.

Is Sanchez a regular color guy?  I thought this was a Tuesday night one-off… then again which commentators don’t detract these days. Maybe most discussion these days is about penalties and overlong analysis of instant replay… I guess I’ll watch the Madden special in a couple days.

I know it isn't popular to say anything even remotely positive about Hurts in this blog, but I feel the same way as BigEFly.  That doesn't mean I don't respect the pessimistic feelings that greend expresses, and so many in here agree with, but I'm just personally not there.

With that said, I do think that the Hurts era leading the Eagles is not going to rival the McNabb era in length.  I am hoping that the Draft capital the Eagles have this year is used to 1) address the non-QB positions that either need upgrades (DE most glaringly) or a transition plan (Safety for example), and 2) trade down withe the 1st Round picks at least once, hopefully more than once, to accumulate additional 1st Round picks in 2023.  Build a strong enough team in all the non-QB positions and solving the franchise QB question becomes much, much easier.

I put a positive comment in the post that you quoted. He did have a good day, that throw was not put in a good place nor should it have probably been thrown.

Bash me for this, but I enjoy it anyway:

I've seen Eagles teams far worse than this.  I've seen Eagles teams where the primary reason I tuned in was to root for change and a draft pick.  But I've never been so disinterested in even watching Eagles football before.  They aren't truly competitive, yet they have no real exciting foundation or future direction.  A running team in 2021 that can't pass and doesn't have anything resembling a fierce defense to back up that run oriented offense?  Yeah, OK...we sure are ahead of the curve on that one.

Maybe it's COVID, maybe it's other things going on in life...but watching this team has become more of a nuisance.  I find myself increasingly distracted and disinterested during the games too.

Matt I disagree. There's been plenty of positives said about Hurts in here, specifically today. You'll have the extremes on both sides, where he can do no wrong, and those who think he can do no right. And those voices from both sides are the loudest, certainly. But reading thru the Blog today, I think most people are happy with the game he had yesterday. Most of us want him to be that guy more consistently for us to buy in that he can be the guy. However, 1 good game doesn't erase a lot of the negativity that he's built up over the season.

Hurts has a chance here to actually earn the job going forward. If he can maintain yesterday's level of play over the next 3 games, all against division rivals for a chance to get in the playoffs, I think he'll win over a large portion of people. If he repeats his first performance against the Giants this week....I think that's his ticket out of town. Considering where we all thought this team would be at the start of the season, I think this is about as good a scenario as we could have hoped for.

I think we're all admitting that he had a good game

Its the inevitable trap that is coming, thats my problem.  Good will be the enemy of greatness as long as Hurts is our starter.

Fair enough.  My comment wasn't meant to single you out, but rather to illustrate the general pessimism about Hurts here in the Blog.

I'm not worried. Howie drafts by consensus, this year you have Sirianni and Gannon, who actually have hands on coaching experience, v Pederson and Schwartz.

I think you'll see a greater emphasis on "coachability" and intangibles than sheer athleticism.

Gannon as a former scout should have a better rapport with the personnel guys.

Except for when he doesn't...  like going against his scouts to pick for his coach, or against his scouts to pick for his owner... or goes his own way for whatever other reason.

Mailata was already the most dominant run blocking LT in the NFL, and now his pass pro has improved to a high level as well.

We got our Jason Peters for the next decade.

I think there's more positives on the team now than what we thought we had in week 1.

The o-line. Mailata/Dickerson look like a great tandem moving forward. Injury concerns of course, but talent wise, they'll be in the convo for best left side in the league. Kelce is a question with retirement, but I gotta say, one coach you should have full faith in is Stoutland. RG can be upgraded, and Lane seems to be healthy. We can look to upgrade Lane, but it's not as immediate a need as it appeared week 1. The depth of the o-line appears to be really good too.

Smith looks like a legit WR, finally. Watkins looks like a good #3. Goedert looks like a stud, passing and blocking wise.

The RBs are easy enough to upgrade, IMO, especially with the talent on our o-line.

So everywhere except QB, we seem to be in an actual good position. You can certainly upgrade a few spots, and add depth, but overall, it seems to be trending the right way.

Defensively, CB finally seems to be OK. Slay has one more year, but we have time to get a replacement. D-line needs an infusion of talent, as does the LB corps and safeties. But we have the draft capital to address these things. And the draft this year happens to be laden with defensive talent.

I kind of like that we bully teams to win. Running for 200 yards a game is a lot of fun, IMO. We aren't going anywhere this season, because our defense is so bad. And Gannon can't stop good QBs. After the Giants loss, I was ready to fold it in for better picks. But if the scenario becomes us facing Dallas in round 1 of the playoffs, and we somehow can knock them out....hell I think we'd all take that back in week 1 as a successful season, no?

Fascinating.  So our drafts are about to get better because our HC and DC (Sir and Gannon) have more hands on coaching experience than our prior, more experienced HC and DC's Doug and Schwartz.

So the problem with the drafts wasn't the GM...it was the coaches with a lack of coaching experience?

Yep, they didn't renew any contracts.  I reached out to 96.1 to see if there were any plans to get them back and never heard back.

He got walked back into Hurts' lap often by Allen and just wrapped his arms around him in a bear hug on multiple occasions.  Opeta wasn't good last night.  He was good enough.  There's a significant difference.  He's a backup and rightly so.  There's a notable drop off when he comes in the game.  He's not a starting caliber OG, which is fine.   As you say, he's a deep depth player.  But, let's not prop him up to more than he is.  He's not Jamon Brown, certainly, but he's not a guy you want to have as your #6 OL, or even #7.  He's a #9 or #10, at best.
