Caleb Williams was offered a one million dollar NIL deal from EMU alum and long time Pittsburgh Steelers QB Charlie Batch.

Him going anywhere but back with Riley at USC seems unlikely, if not a foregone conclusion.

How many games could Rodgers win with this team? 1, 2?  The defense is mediocre, he has two inexperienced receivers, may not have any RBs, the OL is still learning how to pass block.

I don't care who you put in at QB, this is not a SB caliber team, especially on defense.

Rodgers wouldn't have Adams to throw to. Smith is gong to be very good, but he's still a rookie without someone on the other side to take the pressure off him.

I don’t get where you’re coming from with this. The pass blocking has been really good this year.

Lane and Kelce aren’t learning to pass block. Mailata already has it figured out and is playing at a pro bowl level.

The guards had their hiccups with Dickerson initially struggling as a pass blocker. Driscoll played well enough, and Herbig is passable as a backup.

You seem to be expecting perfection from the OL.

Didn't TB use a #1 pick on a QB?

How many QBs were still elite at 40? And in the case of Wilson, how good will he be when he starts to lose his mobility, which may already be happening?

When TB went with Brady, it only cost money and didn't impact the team. Same with Denver and Peyton. Stafford is the only trade where serious assets were traded, and part of that was dumping Goff's contract. And even then, Rams are trading picks in the 20s - and are a team in its peak years that already had a SB trip a couple years ago.

so did the Eagles.  gave up more assets then anything tampa did and guess what? they won a Super Bowl. So what’s your point?

Let me tell you that 2016 roster was nowhere close to a Super Bowl contender at that time. Everyone on the blog and on the message board thought it was gonna take them at least two full seasons to get back to being a contender. we hoped in 2017 they could jump to being a playoff team of wentz was a stud. Jeffrey lurie said after we drafted wentz if you don’t have a franchise quarterback then what are you doing because you’re not winning anything. I know cause I’ve posted the quote over 30 times in here. That was your owner who also convinced howie Roseman of that.

there’s a hell of a lot more quarterbacks they playing into their late 30s and early 40s then there ever has been with the rule changes. So I will take my chances on six years with Russell Wilson as Matt Stafford is the best QB that’s become available in the last 5 years via trade outside of rodgers, Wilson and watson. So this theory you seem to have that in one or two years one of these quarterbacks is going to magically become available but it is unlikely they are better than any of those 3 available this offseason or have the assets at that time to give up to make that deal or you are overpaying for a Matt Stafford type

so spending cap space and money doesn’t effect the team…. Let me tell you something about the 2021 off-season and the Philadelphia eagles.

just to let you know if the Colts make the playoffs and the Eagles are the 6 seed in the playoffs those picks are basically in the 20s. Let give you some more info, since howie got power in 2013 his selecting when drafting 14-30 has been less than stellar. It’s been dillard, Marcus smith, reagor and Barnett. And talking about wasting assets since 2017 , we’ve had 13 picks in the first three rounds: we’ve hit on 5 that lived up to their expectations (goedert, smith, Dickerson (if he stays healthy), hurts (was drafted to be a backup exceeded that) and sanders). So of the other 8 there’s two unknowns in Taylor (who can’t stay healthy) and Williams. The rest are Barnett, jones, Douglas (not here), JJAW, dillard and reagor.

This is like the discussion he and i had about the Texans offensive line last offseason. He tried to convince us they were close to being a top 10 unit. Meanwhile PFF and everyone who grades oline has had them bottom third in the league as a unit every single year since Deshaun Watson was drafted.

When the Eagles traded for Wentz, they envisioned him as a 10 year answer, not a one year flash in the pan. Things sometimes work out in strange ways. And they were able to trade up using players/contracts they wanted to shed in any case. A certain amount of luck involved.

You're assuming that if we trade for a QB, someone will take our picks in the 20s and not insist on the Miami pick.

Plus, it's one thing to trade future 1st rd picks like the Rams AFTER you've build your team, rather than doing it while you're building your team. If you do the latter, you may have to "buy" veteran patches to fill holes, and as we've recently seen, that can be a downward spiral. If you build a young core, sign them to early extensions, you have more flexibility. One problem with the 2017 team was a good part of the roster were players in their late 20s, and they decayed over the next few years.

Jeffrey (27), Ertz (27), Peters (35), Wisniewski (28), Brooks (28), Lane (28), Curry (29), Cox (27), Graham (29), Kendricks (27), Bradham (28), Mcleod (27), Jenkins (30).

Injuries, free agents (Hicks, Agholor, T Smith, Darby), didn't help, but only Kelce and Graham maintained, Lane had injury issues, the others faded away.

Howie just didn't have the heart to blow it up after 2019, but the handwriting was on the wall.

QBs 35 and over this season:

Brady (44), Rodgers (38)

Ryan (36), Big Ben (39) - both over the hill

31-34:

Stafford (33), Cousins (33), Tannehill (33), Wilson (33)

The pass blocking improved when they went to the run, but it was still inconsistent.

A lot of passes the second half were off play action, freezing the linemen, that helped. And made them look better than they were.

Mailata improved, but Dickerson was an adventure, and Herbig more so. Kelce is a better run blocker than pass blocker, one of the best all time blocking on the second level but he can struggle against the bull rush. And the RBs aren't the best at blitz pickup.

I think they'll be better next year, especially Mailata/Dickerson picking up stunts. Still a work in progress.

I never said they wouldn’t insist on that Miami pick. That’s a assumption on your part.  My point was if you’re gonna talk about the Rams giving a picks in the 20s to justify giving them the best shot at a super bowl well the eagles could very well give up picks in the 20s as well. Furthermore Matt Stafford has had a history of back problems. He missed 8 games 2 years ago and dealt with the back at the end of 2020. so Matt Stafford could very well get hurt and the Rams could be giving a pick in the teens next year  (https://www.si.com/.amp/nfl/2021/11/28/matthew-stafford-rams-injuries-status)

let me just bring up another topic in this that helps the Eagles do it now as compared to later. Jalen hurts value might never be as high as it is today. There was even an article written today about this from an NFL scout saying such. So you might be able to use Jalen hurts today and some of your assets to get the quarterback you ultimately want whereas a year from now he might be depreciating and you can’t use him or have to pay more due to decrease value

as for the last point, no crap because I said they should blow it up at the of 2019. It was obvious unless you were in denial or dumb enough to tell people because of Covid we decided we were going to postpone a rebuild. Let me just telling you something  you and almost everyone on this blog told me that’s chicken little sky falling, they still have 2-3 year window. When it was obvious they were fortunate to win a horrible division and had 4 opponents the last month of the season picking in the top 5.

Just now, downundermike said:

I'd be surprised, though his advantage is if the ankle is healed is the run game - because defenses have focused on stopping the pass, a lot of teams are vulnerable against a power run game, and his running ability makes it even harder to defense the Eagles running game.

However, the defense is going to have to show they can slow down a good QB.

You’re not factoring in how bad Hurts’ pocket presence was too. He ran into pressure of his own doing and bailed on clean pockets creating an illusion of failed pass blocking.

Rams were 11-5, 13-3 (lost SB), 9-7 and 10-6 before they traded for Stafford.

Their top players are now Kupp (28), Woods (29), Van Jefferson (25), Higbee (28), Whitworth (40), Donald (30), Gaines (25), Robinson (26), Young (27), Floyd (29), Ramsey (27), Fuller (23), Rapp (24).  So this was a win now move after a long run.

This is what the Eagles would do in 2023 or 2024 if Hurts doesn't work out.

And you’re just assuming there’s going to be a Matthew Stafford there for them to do that. And frankly the three quarterbacks that are available for trade this off-season are better than Matthew Stafford (at 34 with his back history) or any QB besides brady and manning that have come along the last 10 years in FA or trade

Again you just assume there’s gonna be a quarterback. The best quarterback that might be available in 2023 might just be baker Mayfield or Jared Goff. assuming they were ready to move on from hurts to make that move in 2023,  what are they gonna do now? just go back to hurts for a year? Congrats now you’re stuck in purgatory until you can somehow acquire a QB which you are hoping 2024 is the year which the same crap might happen again

Additionally they might not have the assets to beat another team that’s going to be in the QB market. Another thing puts a dent in your plan is if there’s another team doing that and they have better assets than you and they acquire that QB and you’re stuck searching Still

I’m sorry I don’t think there’s gonna be a Quarterback better than those 3 in the next two years to come along via FA or trade. I also have doubts the Eagles in 2023 and 2024 are going to have better assets then another team trying to pull off the same maneuver for a QB. I didn’t even mention the possibility that quarterback has a no trade clause and doesn’t want to come here then just like with watson now.

Would be a no for me, but I think some here would be happy to replace him with Hurts.

Lol baker should be happy cleveland wants to pay him $19 mil. Play to his strengths? They should be giving the ball even more to Chubb and hunt.

want no parts of baker. He’s the QB good enough to get you stuck in purgatory. He will beat most bad teams and lose to the better teams when he needs to make a throw.

2nd best pass O-line, and #1 run O-line. Amazing job by Stoutland and the players.

I actually think it’s a huge selling point for the eagles if they dive into the QB market and offensive free agents.

Everything on offense goes through the OL not the QB...the only opportunity to compete in a playoff game is to win the TO and 3rd down/red zone efficiency battle. The running game and short passing game will be needed to keep 3rd downs in run/pass options. 3rd and longs will not work. That is also where the defense will be exposed. The Eagles can not afford to start out slow and fall behind nor can they trade FG's with TD's. The offensive efficiency is not there yet to consistently move down the field or overcome falling behind. I do not see a win but the experience which includes big game scouting and preparation is good for the team in the long run. Questions will be answered and positions will be exposed, which is all good for self-assessment heading into the offseason.

Of course, that also requires believing we had the 3rd best pass rush!

To add on to your post and I’m glad you brought it up, i thought the last 3 weeks the eagles have really done a less than stellar job coming out of the gate ready to go. In the first Washington matchup, they found themselves down 10-0 after the first quarter. Against the Giants they were tied at 3 at the half. Last week found themselves down 16-7 at the half. In the playoffs against better teams like the Rams, the Packers, bucs i think that snowball that turns into an avalanche very fast if that’s how they come out of the gate.

I would like to say they can hope for a big offensive play or two but that would mean opening up the offense. I think the biggest mistake will be that Sirianni starts out conservatively with ball possession and time of possession as the focus. They would be hoping to minimize the number of opponent's drives. That is the current strategy we are seeing, but it will not work against better teams. The defense will not hold up to opponents converting on a regular basis and will fall behind.

The alternative is to open it up from the start of the game, but I just don't see the Eagles having that capability yet. Is there a possible third option? maybe run more up tempo and push the defense.
