I thought it was the finger wag swag that did it.

Agree 100% with the bold, but still stand by my earlier assertion.  Smith was a beast... very briefly.

Mills sealed the win against Atlanta with that wag.  Him being one on one with Julio shocked Matt Ryan into throwing it way over his head.

I'm sorry I brough such a depressing topic into the blog.  A little back story without too much detail. I met my friend 12 years ago during an AF commissioning program. He was on top of the world

And put 505 yards next to their names.

I think you're not properly remembering the greatness of Jalen Mills.

It was terrible his career was cut short.  I just think Allen was a HOF caliber player.

Allen should be in the HOF, all these old guys saying Ben Smith was better are sniffing glue.

Ben Smith had a lot of promise, he hadn't put it all together yet but showed a lot of promise, sad he got hurt but it's revisionist history to say Ben Smith was better than a multiple pro bowl all pro player who was a finalist for dpoy in 93 and should be in the HOF.

You know they are going to force the ball to him that game. He'll pickup a first down after a gain of 3 while down two scores in the fourth and do the griddy.

Fixed for accuracy.

I think you meant 1993

I would have to agree, no one was better at biting of the fake and getting burned deep then Mills. He was just a master at it.

Sure Ben Smith was on upward trajectory but ultimately didnt because of the injury.

Taylor and Vincent both made pro bowls as eagles Smith never did.

Also ronyell young and herm Edwards were a pretty good pair as well.

Darby and Mills shouldnt even be in the top 10, Darby barely even played as an eagle as he was always hurt  Mills was trash out side of the red zone for one season.

I'd go

1 Taylor ,Vincent.

2. Allen ,Smith

3 .Asante, Brown

4. Lito, Brown.

5 Young, Edwards.

.

I don't see any reasonable ranking where you're putting any tandem ahead of Allen/Smith.

Why did Mills autograph a picture of Izell Jenkins?

The original.   Only one "l" though.  ;)

I mean it's one thing if Ben Smith didn't have a career after the injury but he did.  Certainly he could have been great but for the injury.  I just think it's speculative given how well Allen's career went.

I'll have to defer to the guys that are local to the Philly market, because in those days I only ever saw what was on TV -- but to my eyes Ben Smith was never as good as Eric Allen.  Tons of potential, but Eric Allen is the best DB the Eagles have ever had -- IMO

Of course, it's speculative.  That's kind of the point.   I agree with you that Smith did have a career after the injury, but he was never the same.

Was having a discussion with a colleague...

Excluding QB, the Eagles have a top-ten roster.  Yes or no?

Stipulation....of course the QB matters most.

No. Top 15.

Skill players and o-line only put them 7/8ish. Defense and depth push then outside top 10.

are we excluding the defense too?

If the Eagles are able to add Bradberry, excluding the QB I don't think their roster is that far off from the SB year roster. OL is about the same. RBs have higher upside. WRs have higher upside. Front 7 has just as much upside if not more with Davis, Reddick, Dean, and White. CBs would certainly be better. TEs probably worse. Safeties certainly worse.

The difference is Wentz was MVP caliber in 2017 and Hurts has been nowhere close to that level.

The Eagles roster right now is better than Denver's IMO(sans QB) and people gushed about Denver just needing a QB to be elite.

Does Tarron Jackson have a spot on the roster?  I think he'd be a productive role player and pass rusher.

Anyone see Reub's latest article, top 10 players under 25.   Jack Stoll made the list.  Not so sure about that one.  My guess is he isn't even on the roster.

They haven’t played a game yet.

I don’t think we should crown them just yet.

Not seeing that at all.  Also can't overlook how important LeGarrette Blount was to that team on and off the field.

You know how I know it wasn’t revisionist history to say that Smith was better than Allen? Because I was saying it at the time! That was the year that one of my older sisters decided she wanted to learn more about football because her oldest son was starting to show an interest in the Eagles, and she wanted to be conversant with the sport. And I remember very specifically discussing with her how good Ben Smith was at that very moment and compared him to Eric Allen in a superior manner.

No revisionist history with me on this one.
