Gannon is losing me fast.  Not because the D didn't look good for most of the game.  That is somewhat understandable with all of the new additions. 

But because of the use of personnel.  That part is inexcusable. 

I do think the D will get a lot better over the next few weeks as the players begin to gel. But it's looking like he is handicapping it like Hurts is with the offense. 

2 potentially great units with 1 fatal flaw.

DeVonta Smith- 74 snaps, 4 targets, 0 catches

Kenny Gainwell- 23 snaps, 4 targets, 2 catches

The Eagles got it wrong with JJAW and Reagor and both of them are gone.

They finally get it right with DeVonta Smith and they are going to F it up, piss him off and he's either a 1 contract and gone guy or he will ask for a trade.

Expectations need to be lowered significantly.  This defense is a total mess.  Cox and Graham are cooked.  Hargrave hasn’t been good since the first half of last season.  No pressure, no aggressiveness.  35 points to Goff?  Wait until they play decent QBs.  Same garbage as last year.  Gannon needs to go.

I remain thoroughly unimpressed with the pass rush.  Sweat has never done it for me, but other than him we appear to just have some JAGs at this point.  Reddick didn't make much of an impact

Sanders looked better than he did all last year. Maybe he needs to play with a little ding so he doesnt try to bounce everything outside and just focuses on the basics

I felt like the Lions threw the kitchen sink at the Eagles.  They tried to get a fast start but the Eagles held them off.

They tried stealing the momentum back but the Eagles got that onside kick

Not sure we win that one if they added 3 more minutes to the clock but its week 1 and Ill take it

I'm not sure that Sweat is much higher than a JAG.  I think the bigger concern is how they used him though... and the entire front.   I expected far more 5 man fronts than we saw.   Very disappointing.

With Hurts, it seems like he had no ability to read the defense pre-snap. He would take the play clock all the way down, and then had no idea what the defense was doing anyway. That's a huge problem. 

I noticed the troll mention the offense had no called runs to RBs, but how many times did Hurts check out of that? Maybe they need to limit his pre-snap adjustments, because it's like a blind man at an art gallery.

Need to see the all 22 to be sure, but I wonder if Okudah was matched up on Smith, which meant that Brown had a much more favorable matchup with Oruwayire.

It doesn't seem to make any sense to attack a top 3 pick just to get a guy targets when you have a fifth rounder on the other side covering a guy you just handed $100 million.

It seems like the Lions decided to see if Hurts could beat them with his arm by blitzing a lot, and it left their corners on an island. In that situation, you aren't throwing to a receiver, but instead you are throwing against a corner.

It's kind of like wondering why a team would throw to a guy being covered by McPhearson instead of Slay.

Part of it, and I posted about this before the game was there were only 3 DE dressed for the game and that an injury could really change things.  Low and behold, Barnett gets hurt and you have 2 DE now forcing them to play guys out of position.  Also, the SAM position needs to have an impact on the game whether it's Reddick or the Johnsons. Gannon needs to get creative and make the SAM a force.

Reddick could have easily been used as a standup DE rather than as a SAM once Barnett was lost.  In fact... I would prefer that for his role most of the time.

Nah.  Doesn't matter where Okudah was drafted.  He certainly hasn't played like a top pick.  Even so, DeVonta Smith was a top pick so he should win his matchups no matter the CB.  He's an elite route runner.  4 targets for him is  bad.

So they shouldn't throw to a guy who is dominating his matchup just to spread the ball around?

Jackson would have been the guy.  JAG or not, he's a DE and wouldn't have forced Gannon to move guys around.   I've been vocal on DE being a huge need too.  The Eagles haven't had a dog at DE in sometime.  For as loved as BG is, he's never been dominant.  Barnett is a joke.  Sweat is JAG+1 and so on.  They have DE they can rotate and keep fresh but they don't have and haven't had a DE that scare an offense and you say OK make sure you know where he is on every play.  It's a huge huge need.

It's not about Week 1 though.  It's about any given week in the NFL.   One game doesn't make or break a season for any team.  It is easy to use Week 1 as some sort of anomalous piece of the year, but the truth is, any given week there are things that make you scratch your head across the league.  Terrible teams find a way to beat a good team all the time.  Sometimes a team goes away from their identity for some reason, usually because they think they have a favorable matchup somewhere else.  That's the nature of the NFL.

That's not what I said at all.  But when your 1st round WR has as many targets as your 2nd/3rd string RB, that's a problem.  When you have more called running plays for your QB than targets for your 1st round WR, that's bad.  

We still don't know what the field looked like on Hurts scrambles either.  I'm guessing Smith was more open than he wasn't on those plays too.  Only basing this off of what Hurts did last year which is 1st read then run.

I hate the fact that Sweat isn't all that great.  He's a guy I've been pulling for since day 1.  The hope for a diamond in the rough and getting the #1 recruit in the nation player to live up to that billing now that his knee is healthy. The fact of the matter is that Sweat just isn't as good as we're told.  He's not even ND Kalu or Juquar Parker.

Miles Sanders - being able to stay fairly healthy? Doubtful

Siri- still an unknown, but he is being hamstrung with QB. 

 

There is a lot to work on after week 1.

Please remember that the Lions' OTs are both first round picks.

I think it's a good roster.  I don't think it's a Super Bowl contender.    DE still being a weakness, is concerning.  Pass rush in the NFL is generated by the DEs.  We have bucked the trend for so long now about using the DTs as the big investment pieces and are paying the consequences when our pass rush can't get home.
