Baseball is the hardest of the 4 major sports to understand what you do or do not have in players.  It takes the longest...additionally, the most subtle and reversible flaws can derail production in potential studs, while transient torrid hot streaks in players that the opposition has not yet scouted/dissected can make scrubs look like building blocks.

It's hard and every year even the best armchair GM's give in to brief sample sizes and make statements about what a player ultimately can be.

With all of that said, it's becoming very, very hard not to label Kingery a utility infielder and Hoskins pinch hit power on good teams...or placeholder starters on weak ones.  Hoskins is settling in as a career sub .240 hitter at 1st base.  He doesn't walk THAT much or hit THAT many home runs to justify that egregious level of contact for a first basemen.  I think it's pretty much time to close the book there.

Kingery looks even worse at the plate right now, but he does have the COVID excuse and is earlier in his development.  But at 26, he's not a baby anymore.  Just another in a long line of recently hyped Phillies bats that dissipated after fantastic production in the minors.  Makes you wonder if it's a systemic problem at this point.

With hoskins this is been going on for about a year and a half now. I went back to August 2018 a couple weeks back showing how he’s regressed since that point in time til now. Furthermore Franco if he got the same amount of at bats over the same period of time as hoskins, he would have a higher average, more RBIs and like 7 less homers. At some point in time when it’s been a year and a half and he’s the same player over that stretch you have to say he is what he is. They need to find themselves a first baseman. Whether you move bohm to first or go to the market to get a first baseman.

And it’s not even just his production it’s the fact when you watch him at the plate he doesn’t have any confidence. He doesn’t look like the same player when he came up to the Phillies. He looks lost and like he’s never going to get it back.

I had high hopes for Kingery. I watched him at Arizona and he definitely had some Pop to his bat but man besides the 2 month start  last year where he was good he’s really been bad to below average at the major-league level. Add on his defense has not been very good. There’s been way more balls that reach the outfield because he’s not in the right position or he doesn’t have the range to make the play. I think his career is likely destined to be a utility guy. He hasn’t had as much time as hoskins but the time he has had he has been more below average then I’d say even average or above average.

I think it’s a multi thing problem. First I think they’re drafting guys that Their scouts overrate in terms of talent. I think this is been a problem in the organization since around 2010. Like even trades they made during that run how many of those prospects went on to do anything anywhere else. Carlos Carrasco might be the best prospect they traded. I remember the pitcher Knapp was supposed to be great turned out to never do anything. Drabek‘s kid was supposed to be great turned out to never do anything granted had some injuries. I think they hype up these guys and they wind up being not close to what their scouts are telling them.

Which brings me to my second point of I don’t think their player development has been very good under Matt klentak and previously under amaro. I think klentak has gone way overboard on the analytical approach to the point where he’s ruining some of his players. Hoskins is a perfect example of changed his swing and approach and he’s lost. I feel like kingery is like that. Well Nick Williams pissed away his talent I think part of the problem is the Phillies made him change a lot of what he was taught in the Texas Rangers organization that made him a top prospect. They need better coaches to get the most out of these players and they’re not getting it.

Lastly I don’t think they do a very good job international scouting. I look at the big market teams having success, there’s at least 2-4 good or great players from the international scouting on almost everyone of those teams. The Phillies don’t have any. They had one in sixto Sanchez and that was it. I can’t remember the last international player the phillies sign and turned out to be a good or great at the Mlb level. It legitimately might be Carlos Ruiz  I can’t remember anyone else. And that’s a hell of a long time ago

Frankly they need a fire Klentak and then they need a whole new philosophical approach with what they’re doing in their draft and development. It clearly isn’t working so clean house and get better scouts/coaches. invest more money in your international scouting so you can get those type of players that Atlanta or the Yankees or the Dodgers are pulling out of there frequently

Travis lee was an above average defensive 1st Baseman, Hoskins is not

What covid excuse? he was back well before the start of the season, Juan soto just came back and hit the longest homer he has ever hit

I was talking more in terms of the fact people thought he was going to be a great prospect and they both fizzled out

Probably means kingery to the bench segura to second

Can we sell most of our team to the cardinals?

Scott kingery experiment we hardly knew thee... bohm in the lineup batting sixth today  and why the F is haseley still not playing

Yup. I wouldn't blame him if he didn't re-sign here out of spite

If there's another game that's on national TV that gets postponed or delayed because of rain, I'm gonna smash my TV with a brick and kick the dog.  So the game is on ESPN at 4, gets delayed because of rain (not sure exactly how long), but they never put it back on.  So now I have the pleasure of watching a 'ukn WNBA game!!!

Bohm at 3rd with Segura at 2nd and Kingery as the utility guy actually makes sense.

It may not be what we wanted to happen, but it makes sense with what they have.

It actually comes down to Kingery vs. Hoskins.  Hoskins is better in the lineup now, due to walks.  I think Kingery has a better shot of being a long term piece, but I wouldn't hold my breath on either.

That impacts whether you go Bohm at 3rd and Segura at 2nd or Segura at 3rd and Bohm at 1st.

And why isn't Haseley playing every day?  He's young, he's a high first round pick, and he's hitting right now.  You may or may not love him as a prospect, but how does that equate to a locked in starter, especially in this lineup with the other OF options?

Swept by the ORIOLES.

Is velasquez the worst pitcher ever?

I mean currently the Phillies bullpen is the third worst in major league history. After tonight they might be moving in a second. Like I don’t know how you could be the owner of the Phillies and not look at this bullpen and say how the hell does my general manager still have a job with a bullpen that is this atrocious and not being able to sign JT Realmuto. If this season really goes south I wouldn’t be surprised if Jt realmuto wants to leave the Phillies because they suck

Ask the same question earlier today. Apparently he hurt his wrist yesterday. However he hasn’t been playing regularly all season. And for who Roman Quinn and Andrew McCutchen who are not going to be any part of this team future down the road

Nice roster, Klentak

Like it drives me up the wall that the Phillies manage to keep him around. Their farm system sucks. Their player development sucks.  Nearly all of his moves he made for the bullpen over the years have sucked. His greatest accomplishment was getting Bryce harper because John Middleton stepped in and got him because he want a Manny Machado. Like he’s made two good moves in his tenure harper and didi. Realmuto is still a jury is out because if Realmuto leaves at the end of this year then it’s an awful trade for one year and a shortened season year. And didi could also leave.

Is Neil Walker our best bullpen guy?

To his credit Alvarez is actually legit.

I blame Middleton. He kept Amaro around way too long and is doing the same with Klentak. Between those two decisions, he’s set Phillies baseball back a decade and god knows how much longer. This current state of the Phillies is mid-late 90s Phillies bad. Completely unwatchable. The team and farm system is so devoid of talent, I have little hope moving forward.
