I thought the trade up with Chicago was pretty interesting given that they only had to swap and give up a 4th for next year. If Chicago really was set on taking Carter at 9, I feel like they could have had some more leverage with the trade. Or maybe there was another team trying to jump up?

I viewed it as Howie paying a cheap price to remove all risk. That trade went down pretty early in the clock. Guessing Howie wanted to cut off anyone else from calling up to Chicago for Carter. I think the Bears were going OL no matter what.

For tonight, if we make 2 picks:

1. Give me Dawand Jones or Bergeron at OT

2. Brown, Johnson or Battle at Safety

EXACTLY what I just mocked:

Question on Smith - can he do more than be a pass rusher?

He has unreal athleticism, the perfect size for a WLB, but he'd need the read and react instincts, COD and the hips for pass coverage.

But if you could run out Graham/Williams - Davis - Cox - Kearse - Reddick with Smith and Dean at LB, wow.

Right now - I think Nolan is best suited for the 5-1

                      Dean

Smith-Carter-Davis-Cox-Reddick

He holds the edge well; can defeat jet sweeps, bootlegs, RO with his COD/speed, fluid in his zone drops.  These are all areas where he can be an upgrade over Sweat and might allow Dean to me more involved blitzing.  Pass rushing is still TBD... he currently needs to go around defenders as he hasn't developed a speed-to-power bullrush (Reddick has, so very possible).

He's very good against the run from what I've read/heard leading up to the draft despite him being small.

Trap round, camp bodies only.

Who are your DE's then? Graham, Sweat, and ...

Right, different positions. Our pure DE depth isn't the greatest. You could flip Bennett for someone or a pick, but if he is healthy, you might be better off just holding on to him for depth purposes. Barnett as our 4th DE isn't the worst thing in the world.

I really believe Nolan Smith will not just be a pure edge rusher. This guy can play off the ball well and fly around the field. And, he hits hard and plays the run very well. I can see him off the ball quite a bit and utilized in many more ways than simply being a pass rush specialist. This could go down as us finally using a first rounder on a LB.

The board broke favorably too.  Hasn’t happened often for us in recent years.

Definitely - I do think he was keenly aware of what other teams were going to do.

I wonder to what extent they may try to use him as an off the ball LB.

Nolan Smith is a better run defender than edge-rusher at this point.

Any way to get an accurate count of how many beers Kelce drank last night?

Less than Detroit's GM?

Sydney Brown has some mixed reviews.  Great athleticism.  Great ballhawk ability and closing explosion, which is backed up by production.

But…seems to be a common thread that he’s vulnerable and just not that good in man coverage.  I don’t like that.

When we draft secondary, I want guys that will help prevent us getting relentlessly gashed in chunks by top qbs.  I’m sick of that helpless feeling of inevitability on crossing routes and all other deep coverage plays against top qbs.

I just want coverage.

Just heard that on the radio this morning... pretty classless by Reub.   I get the concerns about Carter; I have plenty myself.  But, to think that you can determine much at all to draw any type of conclusions about a person during a short Zoom call as part of a bunch of reporters.  Seems he's just looking for some quotes for the story he wants to write.

Roob always has an agenda when he reports. Usually if he likes the player then he will dig up a bunch of stats to support the player. And it’s the exact opposite if he doesn’t like the player. I’m guessing last night wasn’t different where he didn’t like jalen Carter due to the incident and seeing what was reported. So he was gonna try to write a negative slant about it so went into the zoom looking to bury the pick/kid. Frankly i think roob is one of the most overrated reporters on the beat. He throws out a bunch of stats with little actual analysis. His stats can be found if people knew how to use pro football reference better. I actually feel sorry for Dave zangaro cause he’s actually a good reporter but has to work along with roob on their podcast.

It's fair to ask tough questions. But if I'm a public figure caught up in anything potentially criminal, I'm not saying sheet about sheet.  I was actually thinking last night about how I'd answer questions on that issue. And the best you could do is like "Yeah it was a terrible situation."  and other vagueness. Anything that hints at "I'm sorry about ABC"  or "I regret XZY" is gonna end up in a file somewhere, used against you in civil court or potentially criminal.

True but we didnt even get the remorse angle, honestly.  It was like "thank god I have my family who helped me through it." Almost like he was the one being victimized.  I didnt love that answer.

Now that was immediately after being drafted so clearly a different circumstance.  I didn't hear the zoom call but if youre Jalen Carter youve GOT to know those questions are coming on a pool call with local beat guys, and it sounds like his answers were still a little lacking.

Im willing to give the kid a chance but Im concerned about it and I thought it was fair for Reuben to challenge the team on it.  They cant just sweep it under the rug and that seems to be their goal yesterday, which I get.

But eventually, they're going to have to address it head-on or the questions will continue and probably get worse. Id like to see a little contrition from him and not pretend like it never happened.  Yeah it sucks, but he put himself in that situation and still got drafted at 9, its a small price to pay to stand up there and be remorseful.

Roob really is biased to a point that is laughable, and now he's cocky because he has been proven right on Jalen Hurts. I always thought he dumped on McNabb because he personally didn't like him.

He's an athletic free safety who can cover a lot of ground. We have no idea what Desai is instituting here, but I'm far more comfortably with Brown playing single high than I would be with Edmunds, Blankenship, etc. We have box safeties, we need that center fielder. Brown can be that.

3 biggest issues for this team right now:

1. The entire outcome of a season relies on Lane Johnson staying healthy.  That is concerning.

2.  The offense needs a viable burning deep threat.  Watkins gets to try to earn that role again this year, but if he stumbles again, this jumps towards the top of 2024 draft needs

3.  Personnel utilization on defense, as stated above.

4.  (Lack of) youth in secondary.

5.  Elusive RB to better utilize in screen and passing game.

3?

Don't go to sleep on Devon Allen in the deep threat search.

@Aerolithe_Lion

Check your Master of Draft submission

You have Jack Campbell who was drafted by Detroit last night.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the eagles call about  acquiring budda baker. He’s a leader and he’s a damn good player. Rumors out in Arizona are he and Hopkins are likely to be moved today or tomorrow. I’m not sure what the value is the cardinals are looking for. Hopkins due to age, contract and recent injury history i don’t see them getting the return his name would get them. Baker is younger and in the start of his prime. But he also wants to be paid as top safety so it’s gonna decrease the compensation they get.

That said, I don’t think they ultimately get him as too much in terms of picks and paying him but if they did, I think that is a massive get by the Eagles. he’s better than Chauncey Gardner Johnson so the secondary at least start if the season with everyone healthy would actually be better

Tough questions, not dumb questions.

That was a dumb question that really wasnt even a question but a statement.  Reub just said I don't think he held himself accountable in a Zoom interview.  Well, who the hell is Reub to determine whether someone held themselves accountable In a zoom call? Obviously, the Eagles felt he did or they wouldn't have drafted him.

If he had asked them if they felt Carter had held himself accountable, that would been an actual question worthy of an answer.  Reubs just a blow hard idiot trying to drum up clicks for his ish articles.

EDIT:

And to boot there was an active investigation.  What did he want a public mea culpa??

I think he was trying to get the team to explain why they felt he was remorseful and accountable.  Maybe he could have phrased it differently.

I wouldn't expect the guy to share details pertaining to the investigation but something along the lines of "I need to make sure Im in the right situation and surround myself with the right people and make better decisions in the future" .... something like that.

Physically, he clearly didnt prepare for this process.  Doesnt sound like he did mentally either.

Hes a young kid but Im looking for some maturity very quickly here.

Get your Madden brain kicking, 1-5-5 prowl nickel defense with DE sub package.

Don't forget about a Brandon Graham option.

The BS part was when Roob injected himself into it by saying "he didn't sense contrition on the Zoom call." That's bush league. Kid's on a zoom call, after the best moment of his life, and Rueben is having a meltdown because he didn't show enough contrition to satisfy some writer on a Zoom call. But that's standard operating procedure for Roob -- he's terrible. He was all in on Bijan and is just mad he was wrong.

The right way to ask the question -- "Guys, what did you hear from him in private that convinced you that he is taking accountability and has learned from this, so it doesn't happen again?" Could even start with "he didn't really answer on the Zoom call, but obviously that's not the right forurm."

Thats fair, Im not as familiar with the local beat guys so if that is a persona thing you might be right.  He could have been more professional

It's the night of the draft. That fat disgusting slob Roob couldn't let the kid enjoy it for 15 minutes before he starts asking slanted questions. Roob wanted Bijan and had been pounding the table for him for weeks and he came off like a loser.
