Split End.  X.  Generally bigger.   Brown.

Flanker Back.  Z. Generally the best receiver, the best route runner.  Smith.

Slot Back.  Slot.  Often not on the field.  It's the slot that isn't on the field when there is a Fullback, or when there are 2 TEs.   Watkins.

Both Brown and Smith match the positions they play well.

Of course they can.

However, generally one of the players is a true deep threat, and generally they’re both bigger.

I’m not saying to get rid of anyone or anything like that. Just pointing out that from a roster construction perspective, we have some limitations in our top two receivers that, in a perfect world, requires a very special blend of of physical attributes from the slot receiver to get us back to having average to a over average size and speed.

Vikings drafting one of the Elite QBs in 2024, to pair with Jefferson. A tank job.

and we're talking about the slot position where Watkins plays.  There could be 2 new players, one who is faster/quicker, the other who is bigger.   who you use depends on the situation.

One option is 4.32 40 / 1.51 10 split running back Achane for Texas A&M.  Smaller and faster than Watkins.  Downside is that there isn't any evidence he can play WR.  Covey has better quickness than Watkins.    When you have 4 great stars, you generally want them to play every down or close to that.   And then you have 2 other spots to fill, and you can put any number of different types of players in there.    What used to be normal for 60 or 70 years of the NFL was at least 1 running back and 1 fullback and no slot.

Would say that the Eagles might want to get a superfast guy, even faster than Quez, whether Quez stays or goes.

I’ve suggested Gibbs myself many times over the past few weeks. I think of all the players in this draft, he has the potential to have the greatest impact on our offense because of his unique abilities at the RB position. Achane and Mitchell can bring some of the same dynamics later in the draft.

I like Derius Davis, who @mattwill has mentioned, from TCU. He would give us the speed and quickness I’d like, but is small and doesn’t have prototypical hands. There is also Andrei Iosivas from Princeton and Matt Landers from Arkansas who would give us size and speed, but at the expense of quickness and hands you generally want from the slot. All 3 should be available later in the draft.

Well, the defense didn’t show up. So I’m really confused how they make any difference in this argument. The defense in that super bowl might as well have been bottom 3 in the league.

So you’re talking about offense, then.

The offense is gonna be fine. We can afford that level of offense, as long as we keep drafting OL well.

Give me a QB that can out score Mahomes even when his defense doesn’t show up

Mahomes was not 100% and didn’t have AJ and Smith

That theoretical trade someone mentioned earlier with the Bears, Hurts for Fields and like 3 1st’s and 3 2’s I think Howie would just say " deal " but there will never be that outlandish offer. 3  1’s ? Not sure but I am sure Jalen would take that as a compliment. Good QB’s on rookie contracts, could you consistently pull that off every 5 years ? When everybody is zigging you know somebody is going to zag.

I could see the NFLPA and the owners coming up with some sort of cap for QB’s because it’s starting to get out of hand and a majority of the players are paying for it. I guess QB’s would start their own union

Actually, I’d really like you to explain this perfect team building strategy you seem to have figured out. Basically, we field the team we did last year, and just draft QBs every four years and hope for the best? Have a strong team that can win you all the games to get to the super bowl, and then, since the final boss will inevitably always be Mahomes, and you can’t win with a good QB anyway, just get to the dance and hope your young rotation of inexpensive QBs can play the game of their life and put up 40+. Does that about sum it up?

There is no perfect team building strategy. This is an exercise of probabilities. What gives you a better chance of winning a Super Bowl - Hurts on $45M with low talent, or trading Hurts for a slew of high draft picks and keeping the $45M in cap space?

If you actually look at the winners from the Super Bowl over recent years, there are two reliable ways to win it:

1) Have the best QB in the NFL by far (Brady, now Mahomes)

2) Have a cheaper QB with a ton of talent around him

We don’t have #1. That’s the Chiefs. So does #2 give us a better chance of actually winning the Super Bowl than signing Hurts to a mega contract? History says it does.

Obviously I don’t see this as a likely event, but let’s just say for example that the Lions offered us #6, #18, #48 in 2023, their 1st, 2nd and their own 3rd in 2024, and their 1st in 2025 for Hurts. That’s a LOT of draft capital — it would leave us with 7 firsts, 6 seconds and 4 thirds over the next 3 years in addition to $45M in cap space.

Instead of getting ravaged in free agency, suddenly you’re a player and can bring in the guys you want and retain key pieces like CJGJ, Bradberry, Isaac and Hargrave. You can make the blockbuster deal for the rookie QB you want this year or next. And you’ll be adding lots of premium rookie talent in addition to a stacked veteran roster.

Does that give the Eagles a better chance at winning a Super Bowl over the next 5 years? It might.

I think the NFLPA and NFL could look to the NBA’s model of max contracts. Because the way things are going having one guy take up 20+% of a teams cap with a roster of 53 players is not a situation the players union likes.

The other thing to consider is that overall, QBs are getting better with higher floors as the rules favor passing, the players become more athletic, and teams adopt more college schemes.

Is the XFL blacked out already?  Game is supposed to be on FX and it's a TV show instead.

I'm with you but we'd be in the minority. If the Lions or anyone offered something close to that I'd take it in a second.

Unfortunately, they will sign him to a huge deal and it will be an anchor unless they keep jacking the cap up huge amounts each year.

The problem is that the players union slants much more towards the highly paid players. They dont represent the little guys very well on issues such as that. Max contracts will never happen.

And this is exactly why I can’t do this. That’s your example? Give me a break, Matt.

So you’re banking on every QB we draft having a historical come-up? Don’t even pretend that’s realistic.

anyone can pick out an example of something that supports any argument.

"I could bang Scarlett Johansson tomorrow”

”umm.. no you can’t.”

”well, wasn’t there a day before her current husband had hanged her where they hadn’t banged yet? Maybe today is that day for me”

The last 2 QBs we drafted had historic 3rd years.

Is banging Scarlett Johansson next week that big of a leap if you banged Natalie Portman last week and Selma Hayek a month ago?

Yes, let's trade a 24 year old All-Pro QB who just went toe to toe with Patrick f'in Mahomes so we can have cap space.

TATERs gotta TATE...

This is true, but QB contracts are starting to eat into the other 21 starters.

Which players took up 20+% of cap space last year? The only 2 players that are 20+% right now are Mahomes and Watson, both will be restructured and won’t be playing with that high of a cap hit. Dak used to be one of those and already restructured, bringing him from 20+% to under 12%.

Yeah, I’ll stick with the QB who out scored Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl, and should have had a chance to win the game, with zero help from his defense. Especially the way this team drafts, you’ve got a lot of birds in the bush, but I’ll take the proven commodity.

I dont really have anything.

I went down there mainly for other reasons. Maxey (among many others) was there signing autographs. I wanted to get an auto for my kids because my younger son loves him. (that didnt work out for us).

My friend who came down with us recently found some old cards he had from when he was a kid. He has a bunch of michael jordan cards that are worth some good money. So we went down for some information finding from the grading companies that were there like PSA, and Beckett...

Those were our main reasons for going.

While we were there, I just picked up some random stuff. Those cards were all super cheap. And the prints, I loved. My friend got a Schwarber one, and a really awesome Harper one. check out Foster Phlly Art on facebook and Etsy. I plan to buy more from him in the future.

My older son is also really in to pokemon, which there was plenty of there as well. So he got a mystery package for 10 bucks which happened to have a Beckett grade 10 card in it. He is thrilled.

We just built a garage, and I do plan to pick up some nice eagles stuff over time to hand in there. This Hurts print is my first piece.

Why would Howie accept that?  Fields is nowhere close to the QB that Hurts is.  He's already heading into his 3rd year so you're going to be right in the same situation very soon where you have to sign him to a new contract.  Also Jalen isn't just a good QB on a rookie contract, he's one of the best QBs in the league.  At worst the 3rd best QB in the league but already by far the best QB in the NFC.

Good move by Howie.

Slay will see theres no one willing to extend him for the money he wants. And he will end up gladly staying once he knows his value. Once someone like Patrick Peterson signs pretty cheap for 1 year, Slay will probably find that he is probably making well above what 32-33y/o CBs typically get.

IF someone is willing to pay Slay, we will gladly take the trade compensation for him.

Yeah the Hurts print was nice. I’ve got some random things over the years. I don’t really collect cards but I do have a Donovan Mcnabb/ Duce Staley double sided jersey patch card and a Reggie White kelly green jersey patch card number 229/250.

I’ve got an autographed Brian Dawkins helmet in a case. I was gifted a Michael Vick autographed helmet from someone who didn’t know much about the eagles and just knew I was a fan and it was his 2010 season. I still liked it.  I have more but those are probably the best pieces. Just looking to add to it. I was able to get one of the Philly special Christmas albums on the vinyl, I thought that was unique.

I still liked it.  I have more but those are probably the best pieces. Just looking to add to it. I was able to get one of the Philly special Christmas albums on the vinyl, I thought that was unique.

Your autographed helmets reminded my that I won a Jordan Matthews autographed mini helmet at an eagles game once. I have that. Its not displayed. I think people will laugh at it.
