At this point he is already getting released. I’m not sure why it would matter to him. He has stated multiple times he loves Philly and there is no bad blood.

I mean he wouldn't agree to a restructure to begin with unless he got more years. Theoretically, I agree it shouldn't matter. But this doesn't sound exactly like a clean break.

Bradberry gave us a team friendly deal and Slay essentially wanted to scalp us to improve our cap situation. We definitely made the right choice. Hopefully CGJ doesn't get (more) dumb over it.

At 32 it was the right decision to not give him an extension where it guarantees him for another two years after this year when he’ll be 33 and 34. If he gets that from somebody hats off to him. I’m guessing he’s likely only going to get two years guaranteed on the next contract he has with a team option on the third year.

this comes down to the old saying it’s better to get out a year early then a year too late.

I think there’s some confusion with the Slay situation. I don’t think Slay wanted a new deal. I think the Eagles wanted to do a new deal to free up cap space and Slay’s side said we will only accept a restructure if you guarantee us 3 more years.

I don’t think Slay”s side just came out and said "we want a new contract”

Slay himself literally said "I want a new contract" on his podcast.

Sad to see Slay go, but the right call all in.  The signing of Bradberry makes more sense now and it means other players sign, the right call. One can argue if less cap funny business had gone on before, we'd be ok to keep him.

But, I hope this doesn't mean Cox comes back.  A sadly faded force from what he once was.

He was on his last year though.

So does this do anything right now in terms of creating space for CJGJ or other free agents? Do the Eagles even have cap space to spend on CJGJ?

If that is the case then @HazletonEagle’s side by side comparison of CJGJ and Julian Love may become prophetic.

Eagles can heavily manipulate CJGJ’s 2023 cap hit so it doesn’t really matter what our 2023 space is to bring him back. For instance, we could give him no signing bonus but a huge "fully guaranteed at signing” bonus that triggers on June 10th (though we won’t do that). Just shows Howie has a ton of options of what to do here

But if we roll over a lot of Slay’s June1st savings to next year, that is what can really make CJGJ’s contract work.

Howie being vicious in some of these decisions is such a sign of growth.

Just saying the Eagles could have kept Slay and then let him walk after next year and not brought back Bradberry. They had options. I don't think it was a "give me new deal or get rid of me" kind of a thing. Never got the sense Slay wanted to leave even if he didn't get a new deal.

But it doesn't clear cap space until June 1st. I suspect they use this money for rookies, Hurts extension and in-season signings.

They did Wentz's extension in June also. I suspect the Hurts deal has been mostly hammered out already, just a matter of making it official when the cap is worked out for 2023.

That was true of Cox in the first half of the season, but not the second half of the season.  His season was a mirror image of Slay’s.

I don’t get why people think this is so hard to figure out. He only wanted a new contract. He wasn’t interested in restructuring to help the eagles as he knows this yea it’s likely the last time he’d be able to get a somewhat big contract since he’s 32 and possibly on the decline. Once he said he wasn’t going to restructure then the eagles had 4 options: 1. Trade him to a team that was willing to give him an extension and give up draft picks to the eagles (unlikely) 2. Slay eventually caved and restructured (unlikely as he knew if he didn’t they couldn’t afford to keep him on those terms and bradberry and still completely the roster) 3. Eagles and slay just played the contract ( unlikely as previously mentioned) 4. Release him as post June 1st and save 17.5 mil on June 1st and use that money on hurts extension and trying to extend CJGJ where they use some of that money saved in his contract down the road

Yep. Enjoyed watching him and he was entertaining off the field too….but time marches on. Good luck wherever he goes (unless it’s an NFC east team, then he can get f’d)

If the Cowboys hadn't traded for Gilmore yesterday...

Months ago, I said look out for Slay being moved in some capacity.  There was just no way they were paying him what he was due this year.  I was hoping it would be a trade but 32 year old CB with a huge cap hit and declining play aren't that in demand.  It would have been nice if he had a Charles Woodson skillset and could have moved to safety to add some years to his career.

In a normal year, keeping his contract would be easier.  When you're on the cusp of signing your QB to a potential $50 million/year contract, every penny spent counts.  Sucks that so much of it is used in dead cap but that's where we are.

Next up, Davion Taylor Christian Elliss, starting LB.

Any chance we can keep her?

No ish, right? Total dime.

How odd would it be if Slay went to the Giants and mirrored the whole Bradberry situation from last year?

Why not make him play it out? eagles seemed to have moved away from that strategy

The longer this goes, the less he will eventually have to take and we'll get him back.

That is what makes his chances of getting a contract with another team better.  They would get the 2023 season performance rather than the Eagles getting it. But the money isn’t going to be even close to $16 million per year.

I’m in the F it, let’s load up on offense mindset now. Lane and Kelce near the end, who knows how long Hurts can sustain his play for, AJ Brown likely to break down in 3 years, Devonta gonna want to be paid….take Bijan at 10 and JSN at 30. Let’s f’n go

The difference between Gilmore and slay, Gilmore is on a one-year contract and the cap number was 9 million and slay’s was significantly more. The Cowboys basically are renting Gilmore for one year. Gilmore likely wants a new deal but wasn’t demanding a new contract. The Colts just wanted to trade him for anything because they’re in a rebuild

maybe Gilmore is asking for that, but I haven’t seen that reported anywhere.
