I believe the founders left the Constitution a little vague at times. Maybe it was on purpose, maybe not, but we use their letters and other writings to try and get an idea of what their intentions were. It is very clear that most wanted to keep the state and church separate and Jefferson’s letter makes that clear, as well as Madison’s argument against having teachers teach religion in school.
