Fauci spent his entire life studying infectious medicine as a public servant. He was well paid in his role but if he really wanted to cash in he had options in the private sector. 

It's not his fault people were too stupid to understand the messaging he was putting out. He's not a guy who's supposed to be in front of a microphone. Scientists are not typically great communicators. They're qualified and precise in their language, and people wanted clear answers for a disease that we knew very little about.
