Speaking of Robert Mitchum, I really liked Heaven Knows Mr. Allison.

My favorite, by far, is Out of the Past. I like the original Cape Fear too. And Heaven Knows Mr. Allison is up there too.

Least shocking thing ever

I didn't know the Arena league was still around.

I commented earlier that I didn't think Bogey was Marlowe. He was, however, a perfect Sam Spade.

That movie gets quoted a lot.   In fact as an Eagles fan it's impossible to have not heard people referencing the movie with a quote from it.

As much as I don't really love this movie, I do hate the band The Eagles. So I can get behind this.

Double Indemnity has a bunch of Chandler's flavor, albeit, it is based on James M Cain's book.  And the movie blows the book away.  Billy Wilder co-wrote and directed, so not surprising.

NO ONE can touch Chandler, IMO.  Like not even close to close. There is a description of a desk and all the brass on it which is one of my favorites, but I don't know which book and have not found the quote.  But it went something like, "...there was a brass inkwell and brass pens on his desk, with a brass blotter and a brass lamp. All in all there was a lot of brass..."

I used to have this as my sig here on the EMB.

"I decided I could lose nothing by the soft approach. If that didn't produce for me—and I didn't think it would—nature could take its course and we could bust up the furniture.”
Raymond Chandler, The Lady in the Lake

FWIW, Chandler despised Wilder.

John Houseman, one of Chandler's few Hollywood friends, remembers one clash in particular, where the author stipulated in a complaint that "Mr Wilder was at no time to swish under Mr Chandler's nose or to point in his direction the thin, leather-handled malacca cane which Mr Wilder was in the habit of waving around while they worked."[3]

Chandler used this experience in Chapter 18 of the novel (The Little Sister), where Marlowe visits the office of Mavis Weld's agent (Chapter 18):

He walked away from me to a tall cylindrical jar in the corner. From this he took one of a number of short thin malacca canes. He began to walk up and down the carpet, swinging the cane deftly past his shoe.

I sat down again and killed my cigarette and took a deep breath. "It could only happen in Hollywood," I grunted.

He made a neat turn and glanced at me. "I beg your pardon."

"That an apparently sane man could walk up and down inside the house with a Picadilly stroll and a monkey stick in his hand."

Adam Schein put out a list of 9 dark horse MVP candidates for 2023 on NFL.com:

1.  Dak Prescott

2.  Derek Carr

3.  Tua

4.  Deshaun Watson

5.  Justin Jefferson

6.  Matthew Stafford

7.  Geno Smith

8.  Sam Darnold

9.  Jared Goff

That's a really bad list.  Some of those names are more than dark; they're in a black hole somewhere.

I think Tua is a good bet.  Actually put money on him last week.  If he can stay healthy he will have some huge numbers.  Dak is a possibility as well because if the Cowboys have the #1 seed and he has a big year you know national media will be tripping over themselves to give him a vote.

Imagine what Jefferson could do with an actual QB

Tua and Dak I could see.  The rest of that list is laughably bad.

DeVonta & AJ no doubt for me. The only duo in the league to make you think about it is Hill and Waddle.

Hill and Waddle have the speed but Brown and Smith are more versatile IMO

That's a huge if. He seems like 1 concussion away from forced retirement

Perhaps. Wilder's private life was notoriously heterosexual though. He may not have been Errol Flynn, or Glenn Ford, or Warren Beatty but he was quite a roue'.

I could see Watson with a statistical chance but there's no way he would win a vote.  Geno Smith might be in the running if Seattle runs away with the division.  He's probably got the best receivers out of the rest of those candidates.

Tua seems like a terrible bet. I predict this will be his final year playing

It is but it's some worthwhile odds to throw some cash at.

From a betting perspective both have value, IMO. The latter for the exact reason you said.

But way more fun in NOT betting on Dak and hoping they trip all over themselves.

Ironically, Chandler might have been gay?  Definitely he was pretty effete.  And did have a much older wife.  And was a world class drinker.  Wouldn't surprise me if he was a self loathing closeted gay man.*  Obviously I have no insight and frankly could care less, but it would not surprise me.

* and tongue in cheek for my next comment, where I am absolutely using a stereotype, but he sure did care A LOT about clothes and fashion.  I could find 10 excerpts where he describes clothing with a "queer eye for a straight guy."  But seriously, his descriptive ability was terrific.

Sounds like those are the jerseys since Dave didn't deny that they were and he absolutely was aware of them regardless of his claim.

So my guess in the reveal is they will get a bunch of living former Eagles that played in Kelly Green to Don them again in full jersey pads and helmet in some big announcement video.

I’m guessing the actual reveal happens on july 8th as that was the date the nfl granted Philadelphia the franchise in 1933

But I have the unpopular opinion that The Big Lebowski is incredibly overrated. To me it has about 4 moments of comic genius spread out through a storyline and character arc I just don't care about. In fact, I find it kind of boring.

Ah well, it was funny for a bunch of stoned twenty year olds back when it came out. Speaking from experience. Granted a lot of its charme nowadays is just nostalgia..
