But all things being equal, if the hang time faced by other returners is tenth of a second shorter but the punter is punting from an average 10 yards further upfield. the coverage unit has less ground to make up to get to the returner, no?

No.  Because the returner sets up the same distance from the line of scrimmage if that line is at the 10 or the 20 or the 30 or even the 40.  As the line approaches, or even gets inside the 50 the returner’s distance from the line shrinks.

If the distance to the line stays constant then each additional Tenth of a second for a gunner puts him a yard closer to the returner.

Man, F Ben Simmons. 😠

Nothing new. Just thinking about the whole Jimmy Butler saga.

Please delete this.  Ugh, what they should have done kills me.  I stand by my opinion that Jimmy Butler had a chance to be an all-time Philly great.  He owned this city in his short time here.

He clearly improved his returns as the season progressed. In the first 9 games, he had 18 returns for 117 yards (6.5 yards per return). In the final 8 regular season games, he had 15 returns for 191 yards (12.7 yards per return). In the postseason, he had 2 returns (both in the Super Bowl) for 35 yards (17.5 average).

I was right there with you through game 9. Then it seemed at some point after that, things clicked for Covey and he was more decisive, moving forward and simply taking what was there. That's all Brian Mitchell ever did and he was one of the best. If being a return specialist is going to be a player's niche in the NFL, he should learn to do it effectively. As a punt returner, that's what I'm seeing from Covey. Some of you are saying, "well he only does punt returns ..." Actually, he returned a few kickoffs as well last season and wasn't the worst. He had 10 kick returns for a 20.6 yard average). All his kick returns came in the 1st 9 weeks. So if that was the point where things clicked for him, it's possible his kick return average would show significant improvement. Now, I'm pretty comfortable with Scott being the primary KR because it gives him a couple more touches per game and he has also shown nice improvement, but Covey, at the very least, could take over if needed.

Covey is no sacred cow. It's just a bit ignorant to only judge him on the 1st half of last season and completely ignore the 2nd half. What you want to see from rookies or young players is improvement. Did he show improvement? I believe that is undeniable. The numbers back it up. What about the "eye test?" Let's give it a try:

I don't care if we bring in competition. We should. We always should. But after seeing Reagor not work out as the PR, Watkins not work out, after seeing Greg Ward stagnate with a 5.7 yard average for his career, I just don't understand what gripes people have with Covey at this point. I wish he was bigger. I wish he was faster. I wish he was stronger --- but I'll happily take the player that is averaging around 12 yards per return, not turning the ball over, and showing genuine improvement. A successful career on special teams can lead to more opportunities on offense (for an offensive player) down the road. 2022 was step 1.

Covey’s return game is the least objectionable part of our STs

I heard the Eagles were considering signing Carson Strong just to send to the Rookie Premier.

They only pick select guys to do these events; not sure if it’s based on their agencies or refusing RSVP’s or what. But last year the Eagles player who did all this stuff was Carson Strong, our UDFA.

Look at the Oompa Loompa in the middle in the front, that’s Dallas’ 6th rounder. I believe the guy behind him with the grey in his hair is their second rounder. The raiders look like they have 4 guys there, but I don’t see a 9er, don’t see a commander. Seems somewhat random.

I've always wondered the process at which players are selected to go.

-Carter looks huge.

-That front left corner is quite the collection of TE talent.  Michael Mayer certainly looks the part from day 1.

-#4 on the Chiefs is WR Rashee Rice.  He's 6-2 203...a decent size for a WR.  He's the exact same depth from the camera as Bryce Young.  The top of Youngs forehead is at the top of Rice's shoulder pads.

-DTR is just happy to be there.

-Stetson Bennett looks checked out...not sure why he just gets under my skin.

-Aidan McConnell, #4 for the Raiders, looks like the guy you'd cast to play Derek Carr in a made for TV movie.

-Cardinals uniforms are better than their previous ones, but not saying much.

Unfortunately, I think that Oompa Loompa has the potential to be a thorn in the Eagles side for some time.

Who is Ben Simmons?

No really, does he even exist?

The dunk contest winning G League guy is more relevant to the NBA than that ... I already forgot him again.

This is the moment that did it for me, at the Georgia championship celebration:

When pressed about his behavior, he said it was because the parade wasn’t for the fans

Michael Mayer is a F'in Tank.

It might be an optical illusion because the guy in the middle is 5'6" but Mayer looks like a beast in that photo.

Kincaid and Schoonmaker look like thin WRs compared to him.

My biggest draft fear was Mayer going to the Cowboys. Now maybe the tight end they picked is gonna be a better pro player, but I just couldn't have stomached watching Mayer, who I loved in college playing for team I like the most, playing in the NFL for the team I hate the most.

Yea, I felt the same but with Darnell Washington.  Luke Schoonmaker is going to be a very solid pro.  He wasn't the flashiest of TE in the draft but there shouldn't be any celebrating that the Cowboys got him.  He's going to be good.

@FranklinFldEBUpper The Cowboys are welcome to draft mediocre Michigan guys all day long.

I’m thrilled they drafted a 25 year old TE in round 2.

if he does end up panning out, they can give him a nice long 3 year extension after his rookie deal to ensure he retires as a cowboy

It’s all about the card business

I mean of all of the tight ends in the draft, he's the one I'm least worried about being on the Cowboys. Doesn't mean he won't be a good player.  I think he along, with Jake Ferguson will be a good duo. Even if he is older than Ferguson.

Nah, Jim Brown was the Greatest of His Time.

I respectfully disagree.  I can’t think of any RB who was better or more consistently consistent.  It is hard to imagine how he would have thrived in the current training methods.
