No one is saying "it’s a given” that Wallace becomes Q or Epps.  Just saying the timelines are not dissimilar as to where he is now (beginning his fourth year).  That’s all.  He was better when called upon last year, so that gives some room for optimism, even if it is for decent play as a backup or third S.

Barnett as a starter, if healthy because either Graham or Sweat is not available is okay with me.  He is a serviceable starter.  I don’t think and never did that Barnett has the athleticism to compare with either Graham and especially not Sweat.  Not every player is going to be a star.

Hope isnt a plan

Which is why I said it's not a guarantee he's good in the NFL. But I have no reason to assume right now he won't be until proven otherwise. Until he shows he can't play I'm going to assume he can based on how good he was in college.

He did play some last season and looked competent.  It's not like he looked lost on the field during games which is exactly how Taylor looked immediately.

The data does exist. They aren't saying he's a bust or will be bad. They are saying he isn't noticeable in practice. I doubt every single beat writer got together to hatch this plan to generate clicks, especially when they couldn't shut up about TJ Edwards last year or Christian Ellis during OTA's. If they wanted to drive clicks about an overly popular college player on a team with SB aspirations, they would be talking him up as much as they can.

Its lemming behavior. Easy clicks everytime you manufacture drama or urgency. The beats are nothing special anymore sadly, mostly due to technology and the evolution of the offseason

I think it's time to move Driscoll down the depth chart all the way to Free Agent.  I can't believe he remains the 2nd team RT after last season and now reading how often he gets beat by our 3rd team DEs.  He can't play tackle and he is not needed at guard.

I think his best position would probably be center, he's not quick long enough at tackle not big physical enough to be guard.

He played some Center in college and if I remember he's taken some snaps at center in practice a couple years ago but seems the coaches like him better at OT/OG where I don't think he's really that good at either.

Plus he's always hurt.

But they aren't doing either. BLG is the whiniest and even him it's just for maybe a minute of an hour long podcast. Majority have said he hasn't shown much but no one has suggested replacing him or benching him. It's usually "yea he's having a quiet camp, like last year. But we'll see how he is when the games are played." The biggest call for urgency is someone saying he should play a series or two in the preseason games.

Curveball!

I think there is still a fine chance that Nakobe Dean turns out to be a pretty good player. But I also think it would be silly to think that he lasted until the third round last year SOLELY because of his shoulder injury. I'm sure that contributed to his fall in the draft, but I suspect that most teams didn't consider him to be as stellar of a prospect that most of the draft guys hyped him up to be. After all, he's small framed and was not viewed as being especially fast, particularly for someone who is undersized. And maybe, just maybe, he was making play after play out there because he was surrounded by studs every way you looked.

And even last year, I wasn't all that impressed, albeit in VERY limited exposure. I thought he looked kinda slow and not especially athletic.

Fast forward to this year and everyone seems to be back where they were a year ago on him, thinking he's going to be a stud. As for me, I'm not quite as confident of that. I think he should be decent, and he might actually be good (wouldn't be surprised at all) but I also think there's a chance that he ends up being kinda JAGGY.

6 tackles against TEN, with a few of them on probably the hardest RB in the league to bring down. Of course, super small sample size but I thought he looked pretty good in that game, which was where he got most of his snaps on D.

I'm really not liking the preseason rules but I guess that's the way it goes. Trent Richardson signed a 2-year deal with the Raiders but was cut before the season. I get it, He didn't play a regular season snap with them but damnit, he was a Raider for a little bit!

For comparison, what was Epps’ path to being the starting Safety?  Or Q’s path to starting Safety?

Qs path was the coaches finally giving up on a  drafted human speed bump considine.

Q should have been in earlier.

Still not sold on Kvon, had high hopes for him when drafted but we'll see

Put it this way I don't feel more comfortable with Dean than I did at the start of camp. And if we're being totally honest then I'd admit I feel less confident if only a very small amount.

Tbh not sure if anyone feels more confident in the linebacker unit or safety unit since the start of camp.

Because it generates clicks, which is all that matters for them

when no data exists its easy to fling poo at the wall

Yeah, I don’t think saying Dean hasn’t stood out generates clicks or engagement in any meaningful way. People way too often default to that narrative.

Mikell and Marcus Epps built up to becoming starters as udfa. They were projects for the eagles annd expected to take time and groom. Wallace had a chance to overtake an aging mcleod and a bad Anthony Harris and couldn’t. They tried. He was just not good. That doesn’t bode well. On top of that last year Epps passed him and they didn’t think he was good enough so they traded for CJGJ. And then on top of all that Blankenship passed him on depth chart as the main backup at S as a udfa rookie and started over him when CJGJ missed time and Epps missed snaps. So they really didn’t think highly of him last year. Add-on he really hasn’t shown any flashes at the safety position in 3 years to warrant just throwing him at starting safety and assuming cause Epps and mikell did means he clearly is like them. I’d argue both flashed more than wallace and trending toward becoming that. He has remotely been on that same path. He’s gone the opposite way of trying to get him to be a starter and regressing further on the depth chart. Just cause mikell and epps did it doesn’t mean he can’t unfortunately be Ed Reynolds or jarrett who were not good enough

Wallace was better prospect and frankly more advanced than mikell and Epps coming out.  They wanted him to overtake an aging mcleod and a bad Anthony Harris. And he couldn’t. They’ve now had Epps, Blankenship pass him, traded for CJGJ, signed edmunds and drafted brown high in the draft. Doesn’t particularly bode well to how they’ve view wallace. His place on the depth chart has gone the opposite way previous 3 years. Those two were moving in the opposite direction.

You and I are on the outside looking in.  The coaches are on the inside.  Somehow I tend to believe they are better informed and closer to what is really happening than we are.

Our only recourse is to speculate and project, both of which you did very admirably in your comment.

I was always a Nate Herbig fan and thought he'd be a player. On ITTB, Caplan said that reports out of Steelers camp is that he's dropped even more weight and looks unreal. I wanted the Eagles to bring him in at RG this year.

Yup me too. I thought the eagles should have brought him back.

I’m hoping you guys are right. I liked wallace. I’m hoping he does it cause safety has been a concern for me since CJGJ left. And i also loved brown coming out. hopefully he’ll likely be ready to start at some point down the road this season.

He should have stopped being a fat slug when he was playing for the best OL coach in the league.

I was once the president of wallace fan club. So does this go down as you either die the hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain?

The way flyers fans built up morgan frost was like he was definitively going to be a superstar. I like the kid but cult flyers fans view of their prospects was always out of whack.

Well I mean he did lose weight while here, Lane had taken him under his wing trying to get him in shape.

Sounds like that has carried over to the point where Herbig is in pretty good shape now.

Actions speak louder than words.  Words out of camp are useless.

Action: Jurgens takes every snap with the 1s at RG.  Safe to say they like what they see.

Action: sign 2 veteran LBs.  Safe to say they aren’t comfortable with what they see.

Dean was so Fing good in college. Not  solid good. It's not hyperbole to say he was a superstar in college. A legitimate game wrecker. He could cover, good vs the run, he was instinctive, he even had like 7 or 8 sacks in his final season so he was good at rushing the passer. Doesn't mean he's guaranteed to be good in the NFL, but with that much talent and production I'd still be surprised if he didn't turn into a good player.

Tough for a MLB to stand out when there's no hitting.

When the pads go on if Dean is still invisible then may be cause for concern.

Cult flyers fans have notoriously been the worst with prospects. Almost all were untouchable or superstars at some point. I think Phillies fans cause of years of letdowns by some prospects and deals where prospects never panned out are usually more realistic with expectations of their own. Heck even this year Phillies fans were really down on bohm for a while.

I was never a fan of Dean, I thought he was too small and if I'm getting a smaller LB he better make up for that lack of height/length by being fast and he's not that fast

I think getting him in the 3rd was good value and I like his character and work ethic and football IQ but not sure he has NFL ability.

We'll see, maybe his work ethic and character and IQ will make up for some of his physical limitations, much like hurts.🤷‍♂️
