EMB Blog: 2023 Camps and Preseason - NO POLITICS

The Lance deal is a good one for DAL, with the potential to be very good.  People assume because Lance got flushed out of SF that he can’t succeed anywhere else, likely figuring if Kyle Shanahan can’t work with him then there isn’t anything there.  In fact, Kyle Shanahan has had very little success developing QBs; he knows how to draw up plays and design an offensive scheme — but that is quite different from developing QB talent.

2007 - 2009 Texans — Matt Schaub.  Didn’t develop him; Schaub had better success previously

2010 - 2013 Washington — RG III.  Griffin had a very good rookie season and regressed afterward

2014 Cleveland — Brian Hoyer.  Meh.  Also worth noting this is where Johnny Manziel landed; Shanahan didn’t exactly do a great job mentoring Manziel to be a pro

2015, 2016 Atlanta — Matt Ryan.  Didn’t develop him; Ryan was already a successful pro QB

2017 - 2022 San Fran — Jimmy G.  Didn’t develop him; Garoppolo was already signed to a big deal upon landing in SF.  If Shanahan did develop Jimmy G, it’s with a mid-tier ceiling.

Shanahan is a bit like McVay in LA — both much better at scheming up offenses than developing the players within it.

I don't think this trade helps dallas at all immediately, but a 4th rd pick for a project QB is not much of a risk. What is Lance, like 22 years old right now? Being in a situation where he is clearly not competing for a starting job may actually help him get time to develop. The 49ers were stupid to give up what they did to draft him. There has been a trend of "stupid" plaguing the NFL ever since around 2015, I think it was based on a quote from Jeff Fisher, where supposedly if a team feels there's a future franchise QB in the draft, they should go all in to get him. Ever since then, you see every QB drafted higher than their grade or prospect ranking. Guys like Winston, Mariota, Goff, Wentz, Trubisky, Mayfield, Darnold, Rosen, Haskins, Z. Wilson, Lance, Fields, etc... were all taken much higher than they should have been.

I can't believe Pre-Season is over (for us). I haven't actually been able to watch even a single snap. Did Hurts play any at all?

Hurts, Brown, Smith, Goedert, and the entire starting offensive line played a combined total of zero snaps. Swift, Gainwell, and Scott might have played a combined thirty snaps. Penny might have played about thirty himself. Sermon played a ton though.

Basically anyone who is any good didn't play.

How many snaps did Jordan Davis play and did he show anything at all?

He did not.

That's what I figured, I hadn't seen any stats for him.

I don't mind that at all. Pre-season has become meaningless, just a risk for injury. Though I suppose there is some value there.

By the way, I'm just waiting on some backordered ink to be able to do the Blu Ray discs of 2017.

It didn’t make any sense to move up from #12 to 3 overall to get Lance; he might well have been on the board at #12 had they stayed put, but we’ll never know.  It’s doubly stupid of the Niners not to understand Lance was going to need at least 1-2 years of development before he was ready to start.  He started about 12 games at ND State.  They jerked around Jimmy G and jerked around Lance at the same time.

I think both Young and Richardson will also bust, but we’ll see.  CAR climbing #9 to 1 overall to draft a 5’10, 190 lb QB who isn’t fast and doesn’t have a plus-arm is quite a recipe for disaster

He played very few and made a play or two. Jordan Davis not being good is a myth supported by weirdos. Just enjoy his career.

He's also in tremendous shape this year. He worked really hard in the offseason to have more endurance and strength.

I can't tell if he will be a really good run stuffer with some occasional pass rush pop or a actual beast but people who think he is bad have no idea how to watch football.

PFF loves him BTW.

Here is a neutral observer's breakdown.

@Alphagrand Its possible that if the 49ers kept Jimmy G as the 2022 week 1 starter that Trey Lance would have played the whole game vs Philly in the NFCCG and only lost by 17 instead of 24. 🤣

A draft pick is never just a draft pick, Its also how you get that guy ready to play and surround him with what he needs.

Z- draft grade for Lynch and Shanahan on that pick and all that followed.

John McMullen of Birds 365 who attended every practice said that Garner had a better training camp then Ricks but neither fit on the 53, his opinion not mine

In the entire preseason? Maybe ten. He didn’t flash but he probably did what was asked of him in plugging the inside. Carter flashed more but might have only been on the field for about five plays total.

I don't think we should be rooting for Gardner-Johnson to fail. He's still a component in the comp pick formula for next year.

Agreed, but we have so many guys eligible that it likely won't matter.

Let's be honest, CJ is not getting cut so it's not worth worrying about his comp pick status for us.

It's just more media drama

I think it can be counted on one hand... and not really unless you are looking to study his impact.  But, I don't think Davis is going to flash, but later upon study we'll see his impact as he takes on extra blockers.  My hope is Vince Wilfork for him, and he wasn't flashy at all.

If they do... we should expect that they will be trading one of them before cut down day.

But they don't.  Because when your top guy is middle of the pack... then how good could the rest of the room be?

Name a few good balding QBs at 23, they don't exist. Glad we didn't trade for him

This is allowed?

Wild answer.  He doesn't think Mike Evans and Chris Godwin will be there that long.

He's also rather have Baker Mayfield as his QB instead of Jalen Hurts

Were you going for forest Gump here or am I the only that read it in his voice..

I read that as gump

Last week they were slobbing over an incomplete pass. This week, I give you a simple QB evade move for a 4 yard run. No one wants to see Bryce Young fail but it's so annoying when media outlets try to hard to make routine plays seem like some never before seen plays. Same was happening with Richardson against the Eagles. If they succeed, great. But don't try to make ordinary plays seem like they are special.

Or this. Who the heck is getting excited about 58% completion percentage?

I don't see how that can't be considered 'tampering'.  It undermines the draft process.

Teams have non-binding deals with guys before the draft ends but it doesn't prevent other teams from picking them.  The Eagles could have picked him still

I'm glad they got Ojomo instead in the 7th
