Exactly. There's no win here. Everybody knows it. No way to achieve regime change and no way to destroy their nuclear capabilities without boots on the ground for years, thousands of dead troops, trillions of dollars down the drain. Best anyone's gonna get here is that he backs out before that happens. A humiliating loss is the best case scenario because every other scenario completely tanks the economy and keeps us there for God knows how long. But once a single boot steps down, and that includes Kharg Island, I don't see how it doesn't snowball into a full invasion.

Iwo Jima took a month, 110k personnel (giving us a 5.5:1 attacker:defender ratio), and 30k casualties to take an 12 sq. mi island. Don't even get me started on Okinawa. Iraq is the size of California and the surge put 160k total troops on the ground. Iran is larger, has exponentially more complex topography, and is twice as populous as Iraq.
