I think they’ll give him a half to break it and then sit all the starters.

The most interesting part of this is the Hurts situation.   If he's cleared, do they want to get him back into a game for a little work before the playoffs?  Or do they roll him straight to the starting line of the playoffs coming off a concussion and not playing for 2 and a half games?

And if Hurts plays for a portion of the game, you can be sure that the starting OL and Barkley will play at least that portion of the game.

Then the question becomes, do you make Pickett the #3 QB to let his ribs heal more, and use McKee as the backup to come in and get the rest of the reps?

We didn't know until after the game that McKee took most of the practice reps. We'll see what happens.

I think they said he only took the majority of the reps on Friday.   Maybe I misread that though.

We are 23rd in first quarter points allowed (5.8/game).

We are 1st for the remainder of the game (13.3).

Eagles -3.5 he ain’t playing 😂😂😂

Typing this makes me ill, but...Nick Wright just made a good point. Going for the record, playing the starters, could backfire in 2 ways. First, someone gets hurt. That we all know, and you'd need the full complement of starters out there, so you're not just risking Barkley. But another potential outcome is -- they go for it and don't get it. And lose to the Giants with the starters. How much does that dent the team's confidence and aura going into the playoffs?

I was already 100% on board with resting everyone, but this conversation has been people assuming he'll get the 101 yards. The Giants might put 10 in the box; hell, given the potential embarrassment to that organization, Joe Schoen will demand it. Going for it, not getting it and losing to a terrible Giants team could derail the whole locker room.

Just sit everyone down.

   Yeah... the Giants aren't winning this game if this team is going for the rushing record.  Let's remember, they ran all over that team in Game 1.  Barkley could have the record already if he hadn't allowed himself to be sat down in that game.  He had 177 yards in less than 3 quarters.  Another 100 yards in that game, or at least another 60 or so was a very real possibility, and then he could have looked to tack on the rest needed last week, since they also sat him in that game.

But, there's no way that this team let's the Giants beat them if they are going for it.  The Giants might only get 3 possessions per half, at most before the starters sit down.

Or...small minds rarely differ.

J/k. That's just a line someone dropped on me early in my career when I said "great minds think alike," and it really was hysterical (and truthful).

So ironic given your current alignment with Nick Wright.

You’re actually really, really wrong there.

If they rest Barkley - anything less than a Super Bowl Championship - all eyes will be on Sirianni.

Making it to the Super Bowl - he would likely be "ok”.

Anything less than a Super Bowl appearance and fans will be second guessing and criticizing his decision for YEARS.

Barkley has a chance to make history for this team by breaking that record.   That record is immortal until it is beaten.    Do you not understand that?

Other than a Lombardi Trophy, few achievements at the NFL level are better than the single season ALL TIME rushing record.

Arguably the hardest single season record to beat. (Because of the skill level needed, the offense needed, the offensive line needed, the punishment RB’s take and likelihood of injury for RB’s,etc)

Thank you for mentioning the likelihood of injury. I therefore rest my case and hopefully Saquon next week.

Would add, churlishly, that there are so many asterisks on the rushing record that it has minimal value, at least for me. For example, in two more games, Saquon has outrushed OJ by two whole yards.

I'm on the sit Barkley side the more I think about it.

Hate to say it, but I wouldn't put it past the Giants to intentionally try to hurt him.

man after thant crazy recovery it was a shame the eagles couldn't win the SB

With little as the Eagles pass I have a hard time blaming Dodson for his lack of production. Smith is the 2 and he’s lucky to get his.

With all the angst about rest for the offense, I think it might be more crucial to give a majority of the defense rest for the playoff run.
A rejuvenated d-line and some of the back seven could really help against the gauntlet they are about to face.
Give some key players on O some rest (Lane, Dickerson etc.) and let most play a half. You surely don’t want major injuries, but you can’t let "what-ifs” rule your decision either.

Folks who wanna go for the rushing record should zoom out a little bit.

Eagles are remarkably healthy right now. Saquon has 378 touches and still looks spry. We have all 5 OL available and playing at a high level - do we not remember the 8,000 OL combinations year? Hell, every core player on the roster is available and playing at a high level.

Count your blessings and start the backups next week.

No

Didinger pointed out the very same thing with regard to how the Giants organization would react.  They may even go so far as to go over the line with a cheap shot or two as it would surely feel as if Barkley and the Eagles were rubbing their noses in it.

Rest everyone and go on to win the SB.

Barkley was an extremely popular player in the Giants locker room, just like he is in Philly.  Players aren’t going to try to injure one of their friends because their crappy owner or GM wishes it.

Far more likely their players would line up to shake his hand if he set the record.

I can’t wrap my head around this. The chances of him running over 100 yards in the 1st half are slim to nil. What’s the point of taking that small chance when you could give these players a well needed bye and recharge before real games begin?

True, but as a human being, Saquon has more than lapped OJ.  So, there's that.

My issue with letting Barkley play is that the starting OL would also have as well as Brown/Smith. Sending him out with just backups would just be a recipe for disaster.

That wasn't an illegal tackle at the time.  And I really don't think there was anything sinister in that tackle other than it was the only way he was going to bring him down.

Last few weeks that has turned around, though. They put up 21 vs DC alone. It's nice to see.

Our run game wouldn't be the same with Ertz over Goedert.

With all due respect, Goedert has only played in nine games this season.  Considering Barkley has >2000 yards in sixteen games, I'd say his contribution to our run game is mediocre at best.  You can't run block if you don't see the field.  Ertz has only missed one game by comparison.

you're right but a player can intentionally try to hurt a player with a legal hit as well correct?

Yes.  But, like I said, I've never thought there was anything sinister in that tackle other than it was his only chance to bring him down alone.

The concrete suggestion has already been made though. Win division = guaranteed playoffs. Total record = playoff seeding.

I think your aim is to create the maximum amount of fairness in the seeding.  The weakness is the level of difference in schedules between teams that aren't in the same division.  It is very very high, over 50%.  I think it makes more sense to reward the 10-7 divisional winner with a home game vs. the 11-6 wild card team given that the schedule variances are so big.  Take care of the things you have control over, win your division, and get the home game.

When it comes to seeding between wild card teams or between division winners then the current tie breaker system is as good as it gets and is certainly imperfect for all the same reasons unless there was a head-to-head matchup.

If we can’t beat the Giants with the starters then we don’t need to worry about the playoffs.
