Barkley was an extremely popular player in the Giants locker room, just like he is in Philly.  Players aren’t going to try to injure one of their friends because their crappy owner or GM wishes it.

Far more likely their players would line up to shake his hand if he set the record.

Probably already mentioned, but remember Favre taking a dive to help Strahan get the sack record?  Now that’s one play vs a whole half of gameplay (or whole), but the point is that organization benefited from an opposing player taking ‘a dive’.

Do I see a division rival doing that?  Hell l, maybe they roll out the red carpet and let Saquon get it in 3-4 carries as a statement to the higher ups.  Wouldn’t that be something?

But in all seriousness, I don’t see them intentionally trying to injure such a respected player

Funny part is... the QB salary is not sustainable.  So, going back to the running game offers a much cheaper alternative to allow a less talented passer to be much more of a game manager, build up the defense and put your assets into a position that's actually much more easily replaced than the QB.

I think the pendulum is going to start to really swing back to more running in the next couple years.  The Ravens with Henry, and the Eagles with Barkley might be changing the roster building process.  Its far easier to get the RB that you can lean on vs the QB that you can put the game on.  It comes down to having a good OL, obviously, but its easier to run block than pass block as well.   It shortens games, rests your defense, and limits the possessions of your opponent.

QB talent doesn’t match the QB salary either.

Pretty much where I'm at. I can't stand Washington. They are almost at Dallas level to me.

The era of the QB is over now too and the NFL as a whole is having a pretty big dip in quality of play.  7 QB’s will break 4k this year…7!  Maybe 8 or 9 if there’s a miracle.  One of those is 17/15 currently TD/INT and another is named Sam Darnold.  A RB is a legit MVP candidate (mainly because the CInci D can’t get out of their own way).

Rushing stats certainly aren’t overinflated this year overall either minus Saquon and Henry.

I wouldn’t say the era of the QB is over. The top echelon guys like Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, and Lamar are as good as just about any other era’s top crop. And then you have guys like Herbert, Love, Hurts, Tua, Purdy, and Goff. And two good rookie years from Maye and Daniels. I think what you’re seeing with the revitalization in running backs is 5-7 years worth of teams getting smaller and faster to stop passing attacks. The league is cyclical and now you’re starting to see more of an emphasis on the run. It will eventually cycle back to more of a passing emphasis.

It’s pretty incredible that the other NYC* team is the Giants and comparatively they’re the joke.

You’d think most teams would hire a full time General Manager before proceeding to head coach interviews

Nah, let’s test him to see if he can make the guy they fired a decade ago a winner.

Yep, the horse collar rule was voted in as a penalty in 2005, however of the 6 injuries caused by the tackle in 2004 Williams was responsible for 4 of them.

I agree with you regarding the intent to injure though. In general I don't think the majority of players are out to injure anyone on purpose. Are there a couple of heated/hated match-ups between players that it might happen? Maybe. Football is a lot different than it was 30 plus years ago. These guys are all in the players union and are all looking to take care of each other on the field and off while still playing a competitve game. A lot of die hard older football fans dislike when their team loses but the players are all on the field laughing and cutting up giving hugs, trading jerseys, etc., at the end of the day they are all co-workers really. Gone are the days of Conrad Dobler and Dick Butkus, those were some mean nasty dirty players, and there are several more from that era...

Yup, your opponent this year might be your team mate next year.

I would argue that it matters far more than you think and is far more relevant than you may think.  Sports, at its essence, exists for the purposes of entertainment.  If the only thing that is entertaining is the Super Bowl... then what's the point of the entire process leading up to it.   Nah, the thing that separates the NFL from the NBA, MLB and NHL is that each and every game has meaning and offers entertainment.  It's why the NFL Christmas games, even though they weren't great games, held a 5:1 advantage over the highest rated NBA Christmas games.

Barkley going for a record that has stood for 4 decades is an intriguing story, and for more than just Eagles and Giants fans.  Ultimately, sports exists to be entertaining.  I will be entertained by watching Barkley go for a historic record.  I will not be entertained watching a battle of backups as the Eagles play against the Giants as the Giants try to not scuttle their draft status any more than they did by winning this past week.

No need for an asterisk, as Dickerson's record has no asterisk despite his record being for 16 games versus 14.  And Simpson's record didn't have an asterisk for being 14 games rather than 12.

I enjoy garbage time.  This game can be like that for the backups.  While the calls are vanilla, not unlike PS, there is game planning and the focus isn’t on individual play like it is in the PS.  Real curious to see Ringo against Nabors.  Speed on speed.  Brown and McCollum getting reps.  Hoping they elevate Danny Gray based on all the love the starters give him for his scout team work.

As to the record? Unless Barkley wants it (and I liked the fact he wants a banner), I prefer they play it safe.

Would be a real **** if the lions end up losing this game and then winning next week, thus making that awful Commanders loss the difference between the 1 seed and the 2 seed.

If anyone of note gets hurt it will be Dan Campbell costing them big back to back playoff runs. Wonder how long starters play.

That bufoon Dan Campbell really lucked into a dominant OC, didn't he?

Wouldn't matter since Vikings won last night.

If the Lions lose tonight and win next week that means the Vikings lose next week, before the Commanders game last week the Eagles needed 1 loss from the Vikings and 1 loss from the Lions and then to win out to clich the 1 seed. If what I said above happens it means if the Eagles didn't lose to the Commanders last week they would have the 1 seed. But they lost to them so its moot point, just would be a frustrating moot point.

That being said, if the Lions lose to this terrible Niners team then they probably lose to the Vikings next week too.

Lions running game would give us fits. Their defense on the other hand, straight trash

Eagles would be looking at #1 seed right now…

Kinda, but if this game meant something they probably don’t lose.

The biggest upgrade we can get is Goedert taking Wilson/Dotson/Uzomah's snaps. He's just a much better blocker and someone the defense actually respects.

A lot of our stuffs this year are a TE whiffing or Becton missing an assignment. The latter likely isn't getting fixed, but the former can.
