I find the lack of any rumors around Becton to be very odd. No reports of him talking to teams?

Big Dom is holding him in his basement so other teams can't talk to him, then Howie can sign him to a cheaper deal.

Also depends on what feedback he gets IF he does indeed have permission to seek a trade.

It's hard to gauge exactly what happened with Sweat last year. Did teams not want to pay him or were the trade offers not good enough for Howie? Seems like it was more of the former with how quickly he took the pay cut. If there are teams like Broncos or Colts out there willing to give him a good extension Eagles lose leverage with the pay cut option.

I'm highly skeptical that teams are looking to pay him $15.5mm in cash for 2025. He's a 30 year old, injury prone TE. Maybe someone gives him a 3 year deal that is really 2 years, $24mm or something. But I can't believe his market value is over $15mm.

Just using him as an example because he was the most recent. You also have the Bengals giving Gesicki $12M in his first year and other bad TE's contracts out there. I'd feel pretty insulted to cut my $14M salary if I were him while Gesicki is making slightly less.

I tend to think he wants an extension. My feeling is due to him being injury prone and 30 it’s far less likely a team gives him what he wants. I kind of think they are stuck at an impasse. Frankly i could see the eagles cutting him later like vikas said if they take a TE in the first couple rounds. (Might keep him around see if someone gets hurt in TC or becomes desperate for a TE before doing so)

Not sure if this was just a slip of the tongue but it's interesting Schefter said "and they will get more once they lose Mekhi Becton".

Eh, Gesicki is getting $14mm this year in cash, but $5.5mm and $8mm in 2026 and 2027 that isn't gteed. He handed the Bengals 2 cheap options for 2026 and 2027 to get the cash now.

I don't care because they had as close to a perfect product on defense as a team can get in the cap era. It was going to be diluted with Williams and Sweat. They feel the need to not give Slay one more, OK, but it keeps going and going. After a certain point it's going to be too diluted and rookies and scrub FA aren't going to fix it the way some people think they will. Again, people like you keep ignoring Johnson will be gone in 1-2 years and Brown and Barkley are going to age. There is middle ground in letting Williams, Slay, and Sweat go and then there is Rodgers, Burks, CJ, and then letting DG go on the other side. They are going past middle ground into half a rebuild when they don't have to, and they won't be as competitive. Even if they can plug the holes the depth is what helped them win and they won't have much. Going extreme the way you suggest isn't the only way.

The roster isn't done yet.  The defense has legitimate star players at all the levels. Losing Williams, Sweat, Slay and Rodgers doesn't change that about the defense. They will not go into the draft with major holes.  I expect them to add veterans at DE and Safety. Slay, Williams and Sweat were good players but I think their main replacements have shown promise.  Ojomo and Davis will take most of those snaps.  They will likely invest in DT early in the draft.  The Slay we saw in 2024 may not be the player we see in 2025.  They have Ringo and Ricks.  Ringo played well enough to get a chance to start.  I imagine at Safety we will see the addition of a veteran like Simmons.

Goedert will be a loss but he's not a key piece to the offense.  He played in 10 games and had under 500 yards receiving.  He's just not worth the $10+ million he could get on the open market.

I think he will be cut ultimately.

I'd assume if someone did trade for him they would rip up that bonus and in return extend him and give him some guaranteed money for a few years

You’re an offensive line guru so i bring this up to you. My view of Green is that he is at a worse starting point than where Becton was when the Eagles and stoutland got a hold of him. Not talking about athleticism and physically just where they were at their performance. I get Becton wasn’t playing great either and was a bust too coming here. Imo green was one of the worst OL on a bad OL and has really been for lack of better words awful in the two years he’s played. So stoutland had work to do with Becton but i feel like there’s a lot more work to do with green.

My expectations are if stoutland can get green to be serviceable and competent it would be a big win for us. we need competent backups and maybe someone that can push steen if becton leaves. If he gets him to where Becton was that would be incredible but that’s not my expectation.

I agree with your assessment of Green and I see Stoutland having to rebuild him from the ground up … and I expect that to take a whole season.  So green is much more likely to have a year similar to Mailata’s  years one and two rather than like Becton’s 2024 year.

Probably assumes so given the trade for Green. Hope he doesn’t know something though - I want Becton back.

The fact that Gainwell is signing with the Steelers on a one-year deal tells me the Eagles see Shipley as capable enough to step right into his spot; I doubt the Steelers are paying him more than $2M or so for the season, but we'll see.  It will be very interesting to see what the Eagles decide to do at RB2 and RB3, given that Shipley was a rookie last season and got very few quality reps at RB this past season.  It's a deep RB draft, but do the Eagles roll with Barkley and two other RBs with very minimal NFL experience?  I get the feeling there will be an experienced RB brought in at a low cost.

A.J. Dillon would be an interesting signing.  He's been medically cleared recently after missing 2024 with neck stingers, so he'd be low-cost for sure.

Any Goedert deal may be after the draft, when teams may not have acquired the TE they were hoping to.

I think he said it with the assumption it’s going to happen. I am fascinated that there hasn’t been anything close to being rumored with Becton. So maybe the market wasn’t as hot as we anticipated it was gonna be (maybe teams are skeptical of how he looks away from the eagles and stoutland) or he’s having an internal struggle about whether or not he wants to come back to Philadelphia for less.

Being realistic though, the last 4 drafts have been so good after years of bad defensive drafting. You do have to expect some misses, and that's not pessimism it's just reality of any team drafting. The 1st and 2nd round picks in the last 4 drafts have all become starters and very good ones, and some 3rd rounders and later have also worked out very well. They've found a good process and formula with the scouts, coaches, and personnel folks building their draft board.

In the past we said every team has misses, but Howie had too many on defense. Now he's doing really well, and I expect that to continue especially with Fangio's influence. But no matter how good a team is at drafting, some players just don't work out sometimes. So that may be inevitable.

What gives me hope and encouragement there is if they are able to draft well like this again and one of the guys just doesn't work out, the other picks should be solid so it's not as hurtful as it was in the past.

I hear you, and if the situation is a random one, then having misses to offset the run of hits makes sense.  But the Draft isn’t random.  It is all about preparation and doing homework, so that when opportunity knocks Howie can maximize each opportunity.

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity, and I firmly believe the Eagles are better prepared, which has produced better outcomes

Curious if the Eagles letting all these guys go is more

1) They crunched the numbers and it's a physical impossibility cap-wise to pay Carter, Blankenship, Jurgens, Nolan... and eventually Quinyon and DeJean and keep any of the guys they let go.

or

2) They could, but it would leave them with zero maneuverability and they don't like locking themselves into having many years in a row of no maneuverability to add players in trade or free agency.

Not in the blog but I'm tired of seeing his name in general

Have you seen any good movies recently on CINEmax?   Perhaps you prefer to watch the CINEma at the CINEplex. Perhaps you aren't a CINEaste like Jeffery Lurie is!

Have you ever used any essential oils like CINEole or CINErin?

I really think they are converts to let young guys play.  For years guys like Nakobe sat and they kept putting guys in front of them (I know injuries there too) but just an example.

Pre-June 1 - Yes.

Post-June 1 - No.

Good point.  They all accelerate, but the timing of when varies based on the June 1 designation.

It amazes me how many can't see the big picture. We can dislike certain moves and be disappointed players we like are gone, but you have to see the big picture beyond this offseason. Building this SB champion team was several years in the making. Most of the offense is signed through several years so the defense is where they focused recent drafts and got younger. They have finally drafted star All-Pro players on defense and they will need to get PAID.

Fangio is also influencing the decisions. Burks and Rodgers were cheap, so perhaps Fangio just didn't want them. They also see things from guys ready to step into larger roles, free agents they think they can add after the initial wave, and guys they are targeting in the draft.

By the time the draft is done, they should have a strong DE prospect and starting safety competition (draft pick or free agent), plus whatever other depth they acquire.

If this team is going to win more championships, you're going to look back over the years and see the plan executed over several offseasons, with decisions in 2025 impacting future years. This assumes it all works of course, but the plans seems pretty obvious.

The offense is stacked and they just paid Barkley. Shipley plus a draft pick or cheap free agent.
