That's the multi million dollar question, the one thing this year is, if they do get dinged up again, the coaching staff can't play them into the ground like they did last year, they have to accept that a 100% healthy back up lineman is better than a gimpy starter who can't move to open running lanes or stop a linebacker blowing by them like they aren't there.

Vic really wants OLBs that can drop. Seeing that with Arnold E and AJ Epenesa and from the take aways last week about Greenard missing time (Vic mentioned things he hasn’t done before, which translates to drop in coverage). Edge and DE aren’t really the right term for the position. Now when they line up with two IDL and two OLB, frequently at least one of the OLBs is playing DE or Edge, whatever you want to call it, but visibly to the OL, the OLB could drop, Rush or seal the edge. That’s the disguise Vic is looking for. The fourth rusher on a pass play may be the OLB, may be an ILB or S or even a corner or nickel. The OLBs won’t drop a lot but enough that it keeps the opposing OC and players guessing. For me, that’s great football.

The greatest variable here I suspect is time. There is no way we can have a fully functional offense right out of the gate. Granting that, I expect the offense to evolve in stages. I’m not smart enough to time that out. However, our resident "realist” notwithstanding, I expect a mature offense by week 10. I further expect Hurts to do very well in it. I view Purdy as the least talented QB in the league, smart but with a rag arm. Hurts is way better than that. I think we start with a fairly conservative game plan, rely on the defense, run a lot of OZ and short stuff with a few deep shots, and build from there.

Yup...thank you! I am in agreement that there was always going to be a learning curve with regard to a brand new offensive scheme. I absolutely have no delusions that the offense should be highly effective from the very start. The mindless overreacting in the blog is just par for the course. Geez two balls get knocked down in practice and along comes another long-winded opinion stated as fact that the offense is a total failure. Just insanity but just part of a consistent pattern of behavior.

From my research I am excited to see multiple play calling opportunities from basic sets and personnel packages. Such a scheme allows for high level sequencing strategies in play calling. He may be new in the playcalling aspect , but I am excited to see what Mannion can do. By all reports, Mannion's photographic memory can suit him because he won't need to refer to his play sheet and check off plays to keep track...he should be able to maintain a running record in his mind. That should allow to very efficient in sequencing.

I also look forward to emphasis on the running game and short passing game. Those types of plays should help stabilize the offense while the intricacies and execution come in line over time. I expect they will initially be building the airplane as they fly it. And...as usual...the overall offensive effectiveness will be determine by the health of the OL...keeping fingers crossed.

UAR is a beast of a human being. We'll see if he can leverage that into being a football player. We hit the jackpot with the Jordan Mailata pick. Can lightning strike twice? We can hope, but we need to dramatically temper the expectations that accompany an individual of his athletic prowess. He's a freak athlete, but freak athletes have failed at football quite often. We'll see how it works for him. Hopefully it does, both for him and this franchise.

Best benders ever - Bruce Smith and Dwight Freeney. Freeney was the only guy Jonathan Ogden could not block. Simeon Rice similarly had Tra Thomas’s number.
