What's the savings on cutting Brooks? @downundermike @paco

There are only 3 players with higher salaries that would save you money, and none of them save you a lot

Brandon Brooks would "save" you 3.7 million with a 15.7 million dead cap hit.
Slay would "save" you 4.4 million after a 17.6 million dead cap hit.
Hargrave would "save" you 1 million after a 16.8 million dead cap hit.

That's it.  That's the list.

Brooks really shouldn't be going anywhere. He's been a walking bandaid lately, but cutting him to save $3.7m seems kinda stupid. His potential upside is worth way more than that, health be damned.

Imo, Slay and Hargrave are restructures/extensions. Kicking the can down the road

I'd rather see Driscoll start next year. He played well before getting injured. I'd take a 6th or 7th rd pick for Brooks.

It depends on how you look at it.  Do you think he can contribute at a high level still?  Are you betting that he can be healthy going forward?  If so, then yes, it doesnt make sense.  However, this is his contract:

Year Age Base Salary Prorated Bonus Roster Bonus Workout Bonus   Guaranteed Salary   Cap
Number
Cap %
Dead Money & Cap Savings
Cut (pre-June 1)Cut (post-June 1)Trade (pre-June 1)Trade (post-June 1)RestructureExtension
2019 30 $930,000 $4,760,632 $0 $0   $0   $9,849,455 5.0%
2020 📝 31 $1,250,000 $6,440,632 $0 $100,000   $1,000,000   $7,790,632 3.5%
2021 32 $1,075,000 $5,939,535 $0 $0   $1,075,000   $7,014,235 3.4%
2022 📝 33 $13,400,000 $5,939,235 $0 $100,000   $0   $19,439,235 8.7%
$15,736,472
$3,702,763
2023 📝 34 $11,600,000 $4,347,237 $2,000,000 $100,000   $0   $18,047,237 8.0%
$9,797,237
$8,250,000
2024 📝 35 $13,400,000 $3,565,000 $2,000,000 $100,000   $0   $19,065,000 7.4%
$5,450,000
$13,615,000
2025 36 Void $1,885,000 Void Void   Void   $1,885,000 --
$1,885,000
$0

As you can se, he is under contract through 2024.  That 15 million in dead cap you are going to be saddled with if you cut him will eventually be paid out over time if you keep him.  However, if the FO determines that its time to move on and they will replace him either through FA or a draft pick (we do have 3 firsts after all), then cutting him now makes sense.  Sure, you only save $3.7 million.  But then he is off the books completely and you "save" 11.6 million in 2023 and 13.4 million in 2024.

Soapbox:

This is yet another reason you want your roster to have cap flexibility.  There have been times in the past where players WANT to be cut and can't because it would be impossible to stay under the cap\sign draft picks, etc.  (Lavar Arrington in 2006 needing to give back 5 million to make it happen is my favorite example)

He's only played 2 games in 2 seasons and the previous season ended the year injured as well.  If they keep him, it has to be as a backup not a starter so Herbig or whoever will actually start next year gets the reps in practice with the 1's.

He's a free agent this offseason.  They need to let him walk, get whatever comp pick if applicable and come back with Graham and Sweat and draft a DE.

@paco this dead money chart for 2022, does this mean money in the 2022 cap tied up still paying these players?

That's what this thread is about.... big dead cap hits on players who are no longer here due to Howie's over use of void contract years.  :-)

Yes.

And more players like Barnett who's contract hasn't automatically voided which won't show up until the start on the 2022 NFL season.

Edit:

Here is the list

Barnett    $7,248,800
McLeod    $2,140,000
Anthony Harris    $2,408,000
Kerrigan    $1,140,000
Steven Nelson    $1,208,000

So $14,144,800 on top of that for a grand total of $36,154,161

My thinking was that his potential ceiling > saving $3.7 million... that if he could recapture a bit of his old self it would be more than worth the $3.7. I didn't realize how high his base salary was going forward though. Yikes. Might just be worth it to cut bait now and close another chapter of Howie's Dumb Cap Management.

BG played well before he was hurt but father time will catch up with him

I'm glad that Lane came back strong. I was worried he lost it because of age and too many injuries

Brooks isn't worth IMO. He may be a top guard but he's hurt too much. He could come back like Lane but I doubt it

Slay played like an all pro

Cox isn't the same anymore and they need to look for a replacement

Kelce is a legend and we always wonder when he'll retire. I honestly think he'll try to play a few more years to try and get another ring

I would think Steven Nelson will be back.  But yeah that's a lot of money to be paying to players not on the team anymore by the cap genius.

How does this compare to other teams?

I'm not going to go through each one and manually figuring out the voided contracts that are not reflected in the main table.

So if we just go by the main table, we have the second most in dead cap.  The Texans have $35,462,243 posted.  In 3rd place are the Jags with $17,809,664.  So yes, we are in ELITE company.

Also note, neither of those teams have contracts with automatic voided years kicking in this year, so their numbers will stay the same on day one while we shoot into first at $36 million.

2nd in dead money, 22nd in cap space.  "Cap genius."

Btw, the Giants have only $77,580 of cap space and they suck!

Also, lol saints.  64 million over the cap, only 40 players under contract.
