The WHO announced a worldwide initiative to eradicate smallpox in 1959. It was announced as eradicated in 1980. Fun fact since you seem to love anecdotal evidence: the mother of the last recorded person to die of smallpox, Janet Parker, caught smallpox despite being vaccinated. COVID-19 originated *checks notes* under 2 years ago.

The definitions evolved to fit the current environment. the CDC has been cautioning people that getting the vaccine at this stage does not mean 100% protection. this is not new when it comes to vaccines, because as many have stated and @DEagle7 just reaffirmed NO VACCINE IN THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE HAS BEEN 100% EFFECTIVE. and neither Polio nor any other virus has been eradicated on a timeline less than decades. the Covid jabs are VERY effective at reducing severe illness and death. and the best study to date I've seen on how effective the vaccines are at preventing transmission (and reducing DOES mean preventing, as you don't need to prevent 100% to be preventative) is the one posted earlier: the reason this one is more encouraging to me than others is specifically the household transmission data. there are so many variables to try and correct for when trying to compare transmission rates across populations and nations that it becomes very difficult to have confidence, but a collection of data that shows how transmissable within households COVID is in situations where none, some, or all household members are vaccinated is a MUCH more reliable approach because the situation is much more controlled. COVID vaccines work. They prevent COVID deaths. They prevent the length and severity of COVID infection. And they appear to reduce transmission of COVID among households.
