MilliporeSigma is a subsidiary of German company Merck

Eh it's fine.  Busy in the winter time but no big deal.  Just can't believe the stuff people page the emergency line for sometimes. "Her eye has been crusty for 2 weeks! What should I do?" **** it's 9 PM WTF do you want me to do about it now? Grow up and call when the office is open.

Where'd the flu go?

I’m sure there’s some videos on youtube you could watch to do your own research on vaccines.

My wife and I are vaccinated, moron. Not going to vaccinate my two school age children who have already had Covid and recovered in less than a week.

Yah, the flu just magically disappeared once Covid hit the scene.  And you think people need to blindly trust you because you're a doctor.

I've diagnosed 3 cases this week already. The flu didn't "disappear". And there's absolutely no evidence that flu cases are causing false positives for COVID tests. That's not how PCR tests work. They amplify virus specific DNA sequences. Like a lock and key but much MUCH more specific. No COVID DNA, no annealing of the primer sequence, no amplification. Simple as that.

Not to mention that a lot of places offer multiplex assays for COVID, Flu A/B, and even some with RSV now. Hard to argue for cross contamination when there's tests that specifically test for both viruses on the same swab.

lololol no that's not what happened.  The original PRC test for COVID could ONLY test for COVID.  So if a physician wanted to test a patient for COVID AND Influenza, they'd have to do separate swabs which would result in 2 lab runs.

There are now multiplex assays that can test for COVID and Influenza A&B on the same swab.  The CDC is recommending the use of the multiplex assays as this obviously saves time and money as compared to having to do multiple swabs and multiple lab analysis.

The flu didn't disappear.  There were certainly less cases as a result of people not being around each other as much during flu season and wearing masks, etc...

Yeah, by reality. Lab and trial science is the base but policy needs to account for how people will actually behave. Sustainable real behavior must be a key consideration along with risk of side effects when weighing final policy.

So... In the UK we report how many people in the country are in hospital with covid. And the numbers are starting to rise so of course that generates concern. But they are now saying roughly 3 in 10 of those are not being admitted with covid, they just test positive when being admitted for something else.

Mark Twain nailed it.  Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics...  COVID has been one huge example of this and it has happened everywhere and by all sides.

Yeah couldn't agree more. Both sides of the argument invent and twist stats to further their point.

Yeah  made a post( see below) a few hours ago about fauci on tv last night saying the same thing. And this is the thing we were told we were wrong about a few days ago.

Fauci on TV just now saying what I said before, people with covid in the hospital but not there because of covid are still part of the official case counts.  He goes on to say even things like a broken leg and then testing positive that gets reported as a covid posiitve case in the numbers reported every day even though covid had nothing to do with the reason for being hospitilized. This is one of the reasons we are seeing headlines saying hospitalizations of children with covid on the rise.

And also in the UK, not sure what it is like in the US, we have reduced staffing numbers over the festive period. It is therefore harder to get discharged over Christmas and New Year so the numbers could come down pretty quickly once we get in to the new year.

First year in my considerable number of years on earth the I remember the flu taking a year off, but hey, that's just me.

I saw a headline yesterday to the effect:  "84 year old woman WITH Covid dies" - no mention in the article of the actual cause of death though.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.  The original COVID test could ONLY test for COVID.  If a physician wanted to test for COVID AND the flu, they’d have to do multiple swabs and send multiple samples to the lab to be run separately.   The multiplex assays can test for BOTH COVID AND FLU on 1 swab.    So instead of having to do multiple swabs and multiple lab analysis, it can be done on 1 swab.

What part is confusing you?

They're saying doctors should use multiplex assays that test for both flu and COVID since flu numbers are spiking again.  Absolutely no part of that suggests that the original tests have cross reactivity. PCRs are like highschool level genetics at this point. It's laughable that you and @Procus are still struggling here.

Sit the F down.  Adults are talking.

Almost as if everyone quarantining, wearing masks and distancing impacts a respiratory virus. Shocking stuff.
