At the same time there are plenty of other scenarios whereby a person dies from another cause while they have COVID at the same time. Those are two pretty different situations.

I heard on Facebook that people have been dying in car crashes and then they test them for covid, and if it comes back positive, then they list it as a covid death. Yeah, that's fair and you'd expect quite a range of nuanced thought given the novelty of the disease and the range of varying statistics and measurement strategies. With one or two exceptions I'd think everyone in here recognizes the severity of the situation in any case though we will no doubt debate the details.

If you have a heart attack while driving, and die in a car accident, sure, the blunt force trauma is listed as your cause of death, but the heart attack is what killed you. Same with Covid in conjunction with other conditions.
July 21, 20215 yr Secondary bacterial infections in the setting of an bad viral illness are relatively common. Viruses can severely reduce your body's innate immune response and lead to lung, kidney, blood, skin, brain bacterial infections etc, so it's a pretty common complication in the ICU setting. Now sitting around the hospital surrounded by sick people it's also pretty common to catch a nosocomial virus. But given that this kid caught COVID at home that seems unlikely in this case.
