I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Maybe then you should be asking why history isn't being taught.

 History that is being taught to kids from AP history on down is using text books approved by state boards of education each with their own bias. That’s not even history lite.  It is prejudiced and slanted.  History always has been slanted. You have to delve into documents from the time, understanding their biases to get a feel for the truth. The stuff in public school is probably 25% slanted, 25% superficial without background, 25% propagandized and 20% factually deficient and 5% true. Afan, JR and I may be the best read in history on the Blog although I suspect Desertbirds might give us a run.  We would all tell you that we have our own filters as we study and learn. I suspect we would all tell you what I feel everyday, my opinion and understanding changes every moment I ponder and learn new information. History isn’t taught, it’s learned.

I just read my fellow York County’s poster missive on the Confederate Flag.  First, the Stars and Bars was a battle flag and not the flag of the rebellious nation. Second, my wife’s family fought on both sides but she has more ancestor’s fighting for the South.  None of her close relatives could tell you what I know about their participation. My great great grandfather (I cherish every memory I have with my great grandfather) fought for the North. I can tell you where, every battle, his unit. My wife’s relatives can’t do that. Southern pride, bunk. The Confederate flag means segregation, oppression and racism to them as much as it does to me, just some of them think that’s alright.

That is exactly what it is.  Small back yard.

It has a charcoal side box for the heating and placing of the hardwood chips... and you put the meat you are smoking into the 'middle' chamber.

Do you own a fire pit or even a table top barbecue pit?  Go to Home Depot. Right now they still have bags of Applewood, Mesquite, Hickory.  Also get yourself a load of oak. I sometimes use maple to as it gives a good smoke flavor. Burn that wood down to coals instead of charcoal and use that to feed that smoker, maybe with some hardwood charcoal and some soaked large chips to extend the wood. See how that works on a slow cook smoke. Excited for you.

In other news... the wife has just green lighted this:

char-griller-gas-charcoal-grills-3070-64

Someone tell me why I should get it... and someone else tell me why I shouldn't.     Price point is $400.

Congrats on the green light from the wife!  That’s 90% of the battle!

I was going to buy a similar grill and debated it for months.   But I realized that I would need to move it out of my covered patio area every time I used it to prevent the ceiling of the patio from getting smoke damage.  Those grills are pretty heavy and it’s just not something that should be moved around every time you grill.

So I decided to go with the classic....

22 inch Classic Weber Kettle grill and I’m really enjoying it.   I never owned one but my dad did when we were growing up.  I never realized how hot they get, especially when using lump hardwood charcoal.  I’ve never owned either a charcoal or gas grill that gets as hot as this.   Seers 1 inch thick steaks a perfect medium in about 7-8 minutes, 4 minutes per side.

I’ve owned gas grills 3x as expensive and this one beats them all....for taste, seering ability, and overall grilling experience.  Not to mention the fact that if I remember correctly, my Dad’s must have lasted a good 10 years without rusting...and that’s a rarity nowadays.  They still make these Webers in the US and back them with a 10 year warranty, which is unheard of nowadays for grills.   If you change your mind and decide to go the simple route, I highly recommend one, you pretty much can’t go wrong.   I do miss the side tables that gas grills have so I ordered myself a nice 6 foot black folding table to set the food up.  I got the table and the grill for less than $200.  Can’t beat it.

You can get 34 lbs bags of good quality lump hardwood charcoal from BJ’s wholesale club for $16.99 on sale or $19.99 regular price.  It’s Frontier brand and it’s the best charcoal I’ve ever used.   Considering the fact that you would probably pay close to $40 for a similar sized bag for this type of hardwood charcoal, you can get your membership cost back after buying a bag.  (If you search online, Groupon, etc you can typically get a 1 year membership to BJ’s for around $25 instead of $50 or $60)

I never thought it was worth it either until a few years ago when they sent me a $25 offer.  So decided to try it out.   The cost savings on paper products (paper towels, toilet paper) alone are worth it.  And their house brands, Berkeley Jensen and Wesley Farms are the absolute best house brands I’ve ever tried, some of their products are better than name brands.  They also have a deli, which Costco doesn’t have.   Their average deli meat costs around $5.99 - $6.99 per pound for Dietz & Watson.  Normally those same deli meats cost upwards of $8-$10 per pound at the super market.  (Down here in Florida, anyway)

You also get crazy gas savings pretty much every time you shop.  Their gas is already 10 cents less than anywhere else and when you shop they end up giving you an additional 10-30 cents off per gallon.  So always get gas after you shop, not before.

I’ve personally saved close to $500 this year alone just by shopping there.

Ah, well the gas savings stays on your membership card until you use it so if you eventually drive by one with gas you can still use it and get the additional discounts.  I normally don’t hype any brands, stores or things like that but BJ’s is the real deal, imo.

With an e but in many cases, like science, it’s a process of learning. I despise the cavalier dismissal of history as a fiction. You proselytize at great length about what you here are dismissing as fiction. I suggest you delete all your "history” based posts if you actually believe Voltaire’s little quip. From what perspective, do you suppose, he was making that comment? Do you think he was dismissing the study of history?

Didnt state i believed or didnt believe it.

In many cases history is fiction agreed upon.

History often is written by the winners.

Im sure the native americans history of of white colonization is much different than told by the conquering colonies no?

I think thats the point Voltaire is trying to make, not dismissing all history.

Do they?  Not any of the Confederate monuments I saw growing up in the South studying the War of Northern Aggression.

I see this discussion is back from like 4 years ago. Ill say the same thing I said back then cause its still right and anyone who disagrees is still wrong.

Do you think concentration camps such as Auschwitz should be demolished?

Do you think the remains of the Berlin wall should be demolished?

Should the fix the facades of their bullet riddled buildings in Germany?

Should they remove the plaques from the doorsteps of houses that bare the names of the victims who were torn from those homes?

Oh man the list of things there that serve as a reminder of their past would be impossibly long to go on.

But they are a progressive country in Germany. They wear their past with pride. Not because they are proud of it, but because they are proud of how much theyve grown.

Knocking down monuments is stupid.

I recently saw a friend of my sister post on facebook- If they dont want to take down the Lee statue, then they should set up a memorial right next to his memorial dedicated to the number of slaves who died before the Civil War, to remind everyone that this is what he fought to preserve and the cost of his fight was the blood of innocents.

I love that idea.

Its crazy. Many of the same people who likened Trump to Hitler around the 2016 election were the same ones rooting for statues to be torn down then too. I think I remember street names changed. On one hand they are warning that we are doomed to repeat history and trying to point out all the similarities of the road we are headed down. On the other hand they are also trying to delete all reminders. So how then can we be expected to remember? Whats next. Shall these important people in our history have their names redacted from history books? Should we just get rid of the ones that are already printed with those names in them?  How ironic. The notZs burnt books.

This idea is stupid. And also hypocrytical. And stupid.

Complete red herring. Nobody is talking about knocking down Appomattox courthouse or the structures at Gettysburg. You’re ignoring the difference between preserving historical places and erecting statues to honor them. This argument is tired and unsound. Show me the statues to hitler in Germany or military installations named for donitz and goebbels and we’ll talk. But you can’t because they don’t exist. Stop pretending it’s the same thing. Still wrong.

They are talking about taking down statues that were placed well after the fact, not removing historical buildings or battlegrounds. There's no need to have statues of Confederate generals around. They could have historical markers with information or generalized memorials to lost lives, but plain and simple most Confederate monuments were made to glorify the people they represent. There's documentaries about it when they talk about the placement of the statues and such, well after the fact, and the re-branding of the Civil War to states rights, etc. Put them in museums on battleground sites in the South. But hey, I'm just some guy from Hawaii who has no real skin in the fight.
