It will be interesting to see if the third team can bounce back next week. I think the Patriots will mirror our playing time, as they played their starters about the same amount as we played ours, although their second team played longer.

Think this will be the dress rehearsal game before the season… Think both teams will play the starters for most the 1st half

Josh Sweat just seems like he is having a hell of a camp apparently beat Mailata for a sack

Since it was the first preseason game, I'd say overall, not bad. There's always a lot of room for improvement but again, a fair showing for the first outing. Looking forward to the next one.

JP signed with the bears

Free agent linebacker Mychal Kendricks has visited the 49ers.

Kendricks was sentenced to one day in jail, three years of probation, and 300 hours of community service last month after pleading guilty to insider trading in 2018.

Finally watched the game.

Standouts: Jackson - TE; Kenny G - RB; Watkins - WR

Flacco outplayed Hurts, but I don't think it matters.  Those of you that really like Hurts….for all of our sakes, I hope you are right. I don't see it at all, but I hope you are right and I am wrong….or somehow, we find THE GUY.

The D? Really? Many of you are excited about what they did with Mason Rudolph and Steelers starters for ONE series? WAY too early to form a positive opinion on the D. Backups got RAN OVER. Didn't need to pass.

Ertz, Goedert, Jackson on the field at the same time? Hmmm.  Kerryon Johnson did little, but had few opportunities. Howard had a PANCAKE blitz pickup - LOVED IT!
Tough to gauge the O line when the Steelers didn't play their starters/stars. Watts didn’t play. Heyward? If so, it was VERY brief.

DL? I will say it again. Cox is the best player on this team and it is not even close. They need Hargraves to step up and keep triple teams off Cox for this D Line to have success. Barnett is average to below average. Graham is a stud, but age will limit his plays. Sweat? Looks improved, but what does that mean for Sundays?

I liked the overall pass D progress. Have to agree though on the run D. I wasn't impressed. To be fair it was hotter than hell with a dew point of like 70º range and I didn't feel there was enough subbing. I know you want a long look at the fringe roster players, but you can't gas them either.

Also liked what I saw from these guys.

No, I don't think he did.

Yeah add Barnett to my list of "guys I was never a fan of" ( see Dillard, Jjaw). I also am a little surprised Killins didn't really work his way onto the roster. He's FAST and still wondering why he can't be used on return duty and at 5'6" he's really hard to find behind all the 6' linemen (lol). I was hoping he would become a Sproles type. So, I will admit defeat on that front (or was it Peds lack of coaching again?)  I will be watching my new 'home boy" this year, the QB for North Carolina as a possible QB target for us. I also hope to snag a top RB in the next draft with another 1 pick. Gainwell could work out, but with him Sanders and Scott, there is no reason not to add a top talent to that room. Sorry, but I am still miffed due to past Howie effups because I can imagine this team with Smith and JJ going forward. Reagor better show me something this year. Most of our FA pick-ups were cheap(because the loot bag had a hole in it) and that's fine. Like I said just solidify a few spots and get me through the season

Re-Ertz. This will be interesting to watch. I doubt we sign him again(duh). So this is his audition year. Now what did Howie tell Siri? To play Ertz to get him the stats to move on? OR(if I know Howie) it's use him in a limited way, which would piss him off as we prevent him from a big contract next year. We always had a knack for developing TE's(not much else the last decade) and I am fine with Goedert/Jackson in 2022. I can't bash Mullens play(yet) Elbow injuries are bad for pass control, so let's see what he does the next few games. He is expendable

I don’t think it was all that bad for Hurts unless your only looking at the box score stats… 3/7 for Hurts but had two drops and one of the drops was really bad on Ertz was right on him to covert a drive on 3rd.

After that Hurts played 2 series believe Flacco played the test of the half after that.

I mean we control the whole first half of the game when the players most likely to make the team from both sides were in the game. Have to take the positives.

Hargrave was the best DL vs the Steelers. Sweat is having a monster camp doesn’t mean it will translate on game days but he has been killing both our LT throughout camp. Milton actually was generating pressure vs the Steelers good sign for a 3rd round rookie for us… TY McGill has also been consistent vs the Steelers and throughout camp getting pressure up the middle.

Cox is the stud in the middle but the other guys played well. Cox commanding attention let’s the rest feast what we want. And so far early signs the DL will.

Wow lol the Eagles going to regret drafting Fields is already starting after a preseason game. Figured we would hear it if he ha some good games but not after 1 preseason game

I don't think it started after just one preseason game buddy. I think it started as soon as they decided to take Smith not Fields.

Terrance Marshall already looking good for the cats. I had him for us(lol)

FIelds starting-who else does Chicago have anyway?? I think they knew he was starting on draft day

Mmmm I mean I hadn’t seen any articles or reports on it like I have after Fields game… Of course the possibility was there for it.

Some thoughts after watching way too much preseason football.

1. I can't say if Hurts will be any good, but he certainly doesn't look appreciably worse than any other young qb. He missed one deep shot to Watkins, but was on target with every other pass. He also got rid of the ball when he needed to and generally looked decent while on the field. As a comparison, Lance took four sacks. Sure, the guy has a cannon for an arm, but that many sacks in a preseason game is scary. If you made me watch Lawrence, Wilson, Lance, Fields, Jones, Tua and Hurts, and asked me which one wasn't the first round pick, I wouldn't be able to tell you it was Hurts unless I had that info beforehand. It was actually comical listening to the 49ers announcers whine that the Chiefs were playing their starters against the 49ers backups, when 1. Garoppolo played behind the same line and didn't get sacked and 2. The 49ers had some of their starters playing, so there were at most two backups in.

2. The division might be real bad again, which is good news for us. The Giants have serious oline problems. The Cowboys have holes all over the defense. The WFT is going to be bad on offense. We have our own set of problems, but ours seem less problematic after the first preseason game. Our defense played well. We might all demand the team get better linebackers, but Singleton and Wilson seem at least competent. Our WRs are an issue but Quez Watkins has been a pleasant surprise. Hurts, as I noted, looks good. Meanwhile the Cowboys are in deep trouble at CB and DT, and there's no help on the horizon. They also seem unsure who will play center. The Giants aren't suddenly going to find five competent oline starters. The WFT isn't going to suddenly have a great offense (although I do think they are the best team in the division, but one that is really lacking in depth.)

3. We could be sneaking up on people. I can't remember a preseason where we didn't call a single blitz on defense or when we ran on offense with absolutely no creativity. All of our receiver routes were vanilla, a go route from Watkins, out routes from Reagor and Goedert, a curl route from Ertz. (Come to think of it, it resembled our offense and defense from last year.) But we know the regular season is going to be different. Gannon is going to bring pressure from all over the field. Sirianni is going to run more creative routes. It's one reason why I am not putting much stock in what I am seeing from a scheme standpoint on either side of the ball. On offense, I am simply watching for things like blitz pickup from the running backs, good decisions from the QB and good routes from the wrs. On the defense, I am looking for pressure from defensive line, solid tackling and decent coverage. We got all of those things in the first half last week, and hopefully we will see it continue from the players who matter next week.

I don’t mean to dismiss your view, but after watching ONE LOUSY PRESEASON game you dissect the Division opponents’ weaknesses? I say it is WAY too early to tell anything. I even think it takes into October to REALLY know what is good. Bad reveals itself a little faster.

I hope you are right on each of your points; I really do.

I'm content for the moment what I saw from the team in the 1st PS game. Need to see them vs other competition. Hopefully not so stinking hot during the next game.

It was said at the time of the draft by some fans and members of the media. They needed a QB or at least it was felt by some they did and they passed on Fields.

I mean, obviously if Charles Leno, whom the Bears decided was appreciably worse than Jason Peters, turns into an all pro, all bets are off. But do we need to see a lot of football played to realize that scenario isn't very likely? Or the fact that the Cowboys second round pick at corner has struggled so badly they are having to play their third round pick, who hasn't been that much better?

The Giants offensive line was really bad last year, and they have looked terrible in the preseason. Is there any realistic scenario in which they get better?

Meanwhile, Quez Watkins has shown something. Hurts has played well at times, and certainly wasn't outplayed by any of the younger qbs. Imagine if he had thrown a pick as bad as the one Tua threw or been sacked four times like Lance? People in here would be losing their minds.

Yes, it's early. But the whole point I was trying to make was that even though it's early, we seem to be solving our problems. Meanwhile the other teams in the division aren't. Their issues are still readily apparent.

I agree that you can't tell much in preseason football. But you can se some things. Milton Williams bulldozing a starting  guard for the Steelers is a good sign. Watkins getting wide open on a go route against a starting corner is a good sign. Hurts being accurate on 5 of 6 pass attempts (disregarding the throwaway) is a good sign.

I mean, this could be an ugly season. We may as well see the positive signs as, you know, positives, while we can.

Think with Hurts we just need to stop jumping the gun he was fine game 1 wasn’t good or bad really. The box score stats don’t show that he was playing well had two drops and a throw away.

But at the same time it was only two series and the Steelers weren’t playing most of the D starters no Fitz, Haden, TJ etc.

This week vs NE during practice and the game should be the best test to really judge our team on.
