Rather have Baker than Hurts especially if he's available for les than a 3rd

I’d really want no part of Baker Mayfield…even at a bargain

Meaningless TBH.  Neither one of them are the guy.  Would rather know that and go into 2023 with a clear path rather than a QB controversy and media circus.

This is my thinking as well

Some thought Fournette got too much , he really didn’t

Signing bonus and 2022 base salary total $6.5 million guaranteed.
*2022 per-game roster bonus totals up to $500,000.
*2023 base salary is $6.5 million — $2 million is fully guaranteed and another $2 million is fully guaranteed in 2023 (presumably a year from today after the 2023 league year begins.)
*2024 base salary: $6.5 million.
*Roster bonuses for 2023 and 2024 are $500,000 per year.

Performance incentives are not part of Fournette’s 2022 contract, only for 2023 and 2024. In all, the Bucs can dump Fournette after this season and they’d have coughed up/committed only $9 million.

Yeah, that’s too much.

The HBCU thing is so dumb. Scouts go to Podunk State if there is a talent there worth evaluating for their team. Put out better players and they’ll get more attention.

His point was that Baker is a better passer than Hurts. Which he is. It’s a marginal improvement, which is why I’d only be interested if it was truly an Osweiler situation. You’re really putting all your chips in on the 2023 class, but there are so many factors that could happen between now and then. There’s no guarantee you’ll be in, or able to get in, a pick that can get you that QB.

Fournette had 812 yards rushing

8 TDs

4.5 per att

500 yards rec

2 rec TDs

that is not a bad year

And he is very good pass pro

Fournette was productive and if the Eagles were in a position to contend I think he would have been a good addition.  The money they are paying for him is way more than his production has warranted.  I mean he has $11 million in guarantees on a 3 year $21 million. The average value puts him in the range of a top 10 back in the League.  That is not what he has been and it's not likely that he's going into his prime but is past it.

HOT TAKE!!!!!

If the rumors/speculation are true where the Browns are gonna have to give away Baker, I'm in on him.

His 2020 season when they had a good run game(which we have) and his shoulder wasnt hurt he was flirting with a top 10 QB.

He's extremely better than Hurts(as most are) and in my mind 2020 Baker can make us a legit NFC East contender.

The 2022 QB draft is weak, 2023 doesn't look amazing AND you still have to let someone grow. Baker for 22-23 and maybe 24 is better than Hurts over those 3 years ANDDDDD we can actually evaluate our WR's and our offensive minded coach with Baker, something we cant do with our current QB/

Baker and a Browns 3rd for out 5th and 7th.

OR, Browns cut Baker and we sign him also acceptable

I'm fine with Baker as well, especially if he comes cheap,he was better before he hurt his shoulder and would be an upgrade as a passer over hurts

Having said that not sure how much more he moves the needle over hurts?

Preach!

The reality is:

QB's who rely on their athleticism to make plays rarely develop into being able to win from the pocket consistently. The reason is, they never had to prior, and those habits die hard. First sign of trouble or confusion, they take off(like Hurts where he does circles or bails out of clean pockets)

This is because they never learned how to read defenses post snap and go htrough their progressions. They learned how to make one read and go in Read option/RPO offenses. And in the NFL, defenses are better equipped to take that stuff away, as well as take your escape lanes. You need to be able to win from the pocket by digesting quickly what the defense is doing post snap and go through your progressions. IN the college offenses, it really is one, maybe two reads based on one or two players at the most. In the NFL a QB must read the entire defense, pre and post snap.

It makes it very hard to transition in the NFL from a Read option/RPO style QB to a pro style offense. Their instincts take over under pressure, and everything they have been taught is "escape" when in trouble or confused. Sure you can blend the two styles, but you still need to be able to win from the pocket or you are doomed to mediocrity with winning.

Guys like Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray and still trying to learn how to win from the pocket. Their athleticism will only take them so far.

Compared to the others, Kyler didn’t really run that much, his problem was his coach at Oklahoma who wishes that he was the QB.  Riley did everything but take the snap, it’s basically what Hurts is doing now, but the passing concepts the Eagles use are from High School football.

So are guys like Wilson, Lawrence and Field. The only NFL ready QB in last year's draft was Jones.

Which is why you have to be wary of drafting QBs based on physical talent, the key is their ability to learn and operate a NFL scheme in 2-3 years.

Well when you have a coach who uses flower analogies and plays RPS and mini basketball at interviews, what do you expect?

True, but he did have to scale back the offense so Hurts could understand it and complete some passes.

Forget the sex thing, you have to question his arm in bad weather, and his character in terms of tearing a team apart, after Ben and Wentz, spare me the prima donna head cases.

And $230M for an "elite" QB who had one good PO game in three tries?

I don't need his point explained to me.  I know his point.  Cool, we'll see what we all assume.  Devonte Smith is better at WR than what he showed when Hurts is the QB.  Great.

But I'll address the 2023 comment, again.  Since I guess you didn't see the back and forth yesterday with the Pickett fan.

You roll the dice that 2023 is a better class than 2022.  Seeing the 2022 class and available QB's via trade (Mayfield)....I like my chances that 2023 is a better option.  It really is that simple.  There is never a guarantee.  There is no guarantee that Mayfield will be better than Hurts because of his injury.  There is no guarantee that any of the guys in this years draft are any better than Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold. It's not about guarantees.  It's about playing the odds.

Im in the same boat here. The general consensus is that the QB prospects are going to be significantly better in next year's draft class than this one. If we cant trade back in this year's draft for draft capital for 2023 then I would use all 3 picks in the first round, and wait it out a year with Hurts and if we have to break the bank and do whatever it takes to move up in next year's draft for a top QB prospect then im all for it. It just seems to be the best bet moving forward probability wise...for long term.

Mayfield and Winston have very very similar stats after 4 years. .

Plus, you can pretty much throw out 2021.

He thought playing hurt would help his cause. However, when you’re so injured that you’re the worst guy on the field (and not a media darling), then no one cares you played with one arm.

Mayfield’s contract is a problem, though. He’s a FA after the season.

And one final time.....Nothing matters....receivers....head coach...scheme...nothing. Until you get your QB of the future.  Whatever helps that I am for.  Whatever impedes that, I am against.

I get it. I do. You know my stance. I like 2-3 QBs this year and none of them are what I consider R1 talent. I can’t justify wasting a historic 3 pick R1 by wasting one of them on a QB who wouldn’t have cracked the first round last year or next year. Personally, I roll the dice on Ridder, Strong, or Howell in R2-3. There’s little to no chance we are going to have a chance at Young, Stroud or any other stud who emerges next year because we are going to be in the teens to 20’s range again. I say trade one of our 1st to Detroit for 32/34 and grab a QB Nick likes at the top of R2.

Sadly, yes. At the player level, should I complain that white guys aren’t represented in the NFL proportionally to the gen pop? Lol no of course not. I want the best players on my team, I don’t give a F about their color…and really nobody should. I like Deion and think he has a great future in coaching. He just got the top HS recruit to commit to JS over Bama, Georgia, etc. HUGE win for him. Keep doing that, and you’ll have scouts living in tents in the stadium parking lot.

We talking about Malik Willis?  That guy isn't even an especially good running QB.  He disappeared in bigger games.  If you can't run the ball against Ole Miss then you sure as hell are not gonna be able to run against legit NFL defenses.

Not sure what next year's QB class looks like or will look like by years end but I think I'd take my chances next year as well rather than roll the dice with this years QB class in the 1st round.or re tread.

If Howie used a 2nd rounder on a QB I wouldn't be mad, wouldn't t be thrilled but not mad

Not a fan of baby hands Pickett, even with bigger hands I don't think he's worth a top 15 pick.

Everything Howie is putting out and doing would suggest Howie is interested in drafting Pickett, or he's really going out of his way to create an elaborate smoke screen

That's just not accurate.  You trade one of our 1sts back to the right team.  You have at worst two mid firsts in 2023.  Plus a 2024 1st and another 2024 pick.  That is enough to be in the conversation.  No one is saying, two firsts in 2023 will get it done to move up from mid teens to the top 3.  But it's a big piece of a package.  You need to pull some chips back for later.  Play it smart.  Not hasty like some of these teams have done with the QB position.

The issue with getting a 2nd round QB this year.  Is we are in limbo again.  Because you know they'll give Hurts 2022 to "figure it out".  And then what?  Give that Qb we draft in the 2nd this year 2023 to figure it out?

If we draft a QB this year, Hurts gets moved, Minshew starts and the rookie holds the clipboard.

Id be fine with strong in the 2nd, he's got the requisite arm talent to work with.
