September 30Sep 30 Disagree with Gelb that this was a soul crushing loss. Can't crush a sole that was lost earlier this year.

Cause in theory, if you got six consecutive outs, you wouldn’t have to face the toughest part of the Braves lineup in the 9th. The issue to me was always what were you gonna do even if you got through the seventh and eighth with Duran. Cause you’re not going back out there in the ninth with him. Especially after he started to implode in the eighth, it either had to be they were gonna go to Nola, bowman or painter. In my opinion, painter makes most sense. He has stuff that you could say would be really good for a closer. I don’t know mentally he has that toughness. Issue with Nola is gotta remove JT if he’s throwing cause he sucks with JT. Bowlan hasn’t pitched since September 17. That’s two weeks since he has. He likely is rusty but rested. But even before that injury, he hadn’t looked the same in about a month.

September 30Sep 30 I remember back in the day (late 90s/early 2000s) I'd kill for the Phillies just to make the playoffs. Now I wish they'd stop.

One was Jason Smith and the other was John Paul Morosi. Their stance was "they lost with their best pitcher, that's okay". I honestly don't even feel bad anymore for people that stupid. A bullpen isn't just a collection of arms. Guys have roles. A closer succeeds the vast majority of the time in their 9th inning role. The 7th? Not so much.Granted, I'm a dinosaur, but -- in the playoffs, your starting pitcher is your best pitcher, period. If you're leading or tied, you absolutely cannot take your starter out of the game after 5 innings and 77 pitches. In the playoffs, every subsequent pitcher you bring into the game you run the risk of that pitcher not having their best stuff. Your starter needs to go 7 innings, minimum -- period. Your starter going 5 innings and your closer being brought in for the 7th inning is a formula for losing baseball games in the playoffs. I don't need to study anal-ytics to know that's true. Everyone now thinks they're the Royals and can win with the bullpen pitching half the game. This series is being played on consecutive days -- Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. The Phillies will not have Duran available for Game 2 because of Mattingly's idiocy so, even if they're leading today after the 7th inning -- guess what? -- they won't have their closer available -- on the road -- in an elimination game -- with their season on the line. Who will they use? Alvarado? Nola? Whatever the answer is -- THAT's the guy who should have pitched the 7th inning yesterday in Game 1.

He was never gonna go to the normal 100 pitches because of the injury he happened to have and he had really not pitched more than four pitches in a game in an entire month. They were never letting him go his normal pitch count. So I got why they removed them in the fifth. His velocity had dropped by an avg of 2 mph in the 5th. So it tells you he was starting to get fatigued as he hadn’t thrown that much since Labor Day.In terms of the bullpen, that is a Dave problem. Because literally they have a rookie in McFarlane and Duran. McFarlane they’re trying to do what they did with Kerkering back in 2023. Fast track him cause he has good stuff. He had a little more time. But they were relying on a kid who probably shouldn’t need to be relied on as a high leverage reliever in a playoff game right now. They do because they have to.Also listening to Matt Gelb, and a couple of other reporters, the Phillies talked about what their strategy was gonna be all day Monday if it got to that point. So this isn’t just a Mattingly decision, this was organizationally. They met with each other and they made this plan. And I kinda understand it from the perspective in the seventh and eighth inning you were gonna face the heart of the Atlanta Braves order. So if Duran was able to do the job, then you would’ve had the guy in the ninth facing the bottom of the Braves order in theory it kind of makes sense. But the real bigger issue in all this is what were you gonna do in the ninth and I’m guessing it probably was gonna be either Bowlan or painter. But really the bigger issue is your bullpen doesn’t have enough arms. Alvarado had his velocity drop by 2 to 3 mph and his last two appearances. He also was just not very good. Banks is not a high leverage pitcher. He’s a lefty but he’s not been good this year and he’s really not the guy you want to be in a high leverage situation because he doesn’t have electric stuff. Raley and killian arent even on the playoff roster. Bowlan is coming off an injury and he hasn’t pitched in two weeks. So he’s probably gonna be rusty and we don’t even know if he’s good anymore. Because before he got hurt, he was getting lit up. Mattingly deserves blame, but I think the bigger blame here is Dave Dombrowski for not building a better bullpen. And if you go look at the beginning of the year they had question marks all over that bullpen outside of like two guys.

The Phillies are not going anywhere unless Sanchez, Wheeler, and Luzardo are used like horses. Their bullpen won't stand up and their batting lineup is too streaky.

No offense they likely pull painter way earlier than Luzardo if he got into trouble in a playoff game. Wheeler would’ve been on 1 days rest, Nola on weird rest cause he threw saturday), Sanchez on short rest. really didn’t have an option due to not clinching before Sunday. So it was either painter (worse option than see how far Luzardo could take you) or luzardo for as long as he could go. Just saying it was a much better option of luzardo over weird rested nola and painter.Frankly they were always screwed. Essentially what we’ve been saying for months now. Their bullpen sucks and their lineup sucks even with Arraez who wasn’t the solution to their issues. As they’ve needed a RH cleanup hitter/middle of the lineup hitter since Rhys hoskins got hurt.
September 30Sep 30 See they don’t even have wheeler starting game 3. They Fed themselves by not clinching way earlier. It’s why they did what they did with Luzardo.

September 30Sep 30 If the Phillies are going to lose this series (or not win the pennant), I'd rather they lose today, so "Red October" is over before the end of September. Maybe that will humble someone in the organization somewhere.

September 30Sep 30 Had an offensive explosion yesterday of 3 so shouldn’t have expected them to score more than 1
