Analytically the Phillies like to use guys in specific innings based off matchup. Like if it’s the heart of the lineup in the 8th they’d use Hoffman there and they did that with Alvarado in the past. frankly just leave him as the closer. Exactly. They did that before because they didn't really have a 'closer'. Now they do, AND they can use Hoffman and/or Alvarado as needed with the lefty/righty matchups. The bullpen got a massive upgrade, IMO. Estevez pushes everyone down one spot in the order and locks it in. Like I said, they have 2 righties and 2 lefties to count on BEFORE the 9th. Then they can turn it over to Estevez.

I hated the value we gave up in O’hoppe. I’d trade O’hoppe but i didn’t want to use his value on a former top prospect that was regressing at the mlb level and you had to fix to be an everyday player. Imo could’ve used the value of a top 75 catching prospect that can hit to get a more proven commodity then having to hope you could fix him into an everyday CF. Desperation move to get a CF that they just didn't have at all. Similar in how they have pushed Rojas to the MLB level before he was really ready for it. That's why I put forward the package I did for Robert Jr. It's expensive but this team is built to win now and the next 3 years. Schwarbomb!
July 27, 20242 yr Keep an eye on Phillips this next inning. He hasn't thrown in a while. That was a LONG inning.

The issue is they had to overpay at the deadline because of the new extra wildcard. The extra wildcard keeps more teams in it so there’s less sellers more buyers and increase asking price. It’s why I was upset during the off-season when they didn’t really do all that much to add to the team. You’re better off throwing money at the problem in the offseason and hoping it solves it then getting to the deadline and having to overpay in prospects to fix a problem as it’s harder to do. That’s realistically what the extra WC has done to the deadline. dont get me wrong it was always kind of a sellers market, but you could probably get some teams that are out of it to give you a guy at a decent price. Now you’re always gonna overpay.

Don’t just sit and wait to the deadline if you think there’s an issue. Like their outfield was questionable at the end of last year and knew they needed another bat since they didn’t have and then lost hoskins. That said I’d be really surprised if they aren’t in on Juan Soto. Don’t know or think they get him but I’d be surprised just based off all the smoke last summer

Let strahm, Hoffman, Alvarado and kerkering figure out the 6-8 (potentially 6th i should say). Not sure Phillies will. I can see them saying if the 3-4-5 is up in the 8th that’s who we want him facing.

But the Phillies do a good job identifying guys with good stuff but poor control. And work on fixing their control. So I’m guessing we have a couple guys in the system similar. To me keeping painter, Crawford, miller, Caba and tait is a win. Unless we are getting a star I’m not willing to just give those guys up.

The issue with giving up top prospects every year is can’t replenish as fast you are giving up. eventually you’re wanna have some bullets in the gun in case a big name becomes available to make a splash and they want your top prospects. I’m fine giving up top end prospects if you’re getting a star level player back. If you’re just getting solid players, then you shouldn’t have to give up your best prospect. Like if Juan Soto was available heck trade whoever you want to get him (assuming you can re-sign them and he was gonna be here long-term). However, I’d be irritated if they dealt miller or painter to get someone like estavez even with how good estavez is he’s a rental and he’s not someone like mason miller
July 28, 20242 yr This trade, obviously, would have rendered Seranthony useless. They clearly lost confidence in him. You can sort of think of this as the two pitching prospects for Hays plus Estevez. You can argue they should have gone bigger game hunting, but it’s pretty likely they will get a lot more mlb production from the guys they just acquired than the guys they gave up will ever give you.

Yup. Upgraded the right handed bat OF with Hays vs. Pache. Upgraded the RHP RP with Estevez for Dominguez. And with Estevez, you eliminate the question mark about the closer. Tyler Phillips trying for something special.
