The Bruins werent just number 1 in the league, they had the most points in NHL regular season history.

Also, last years champs (the avs) are losing with 10 mins to go in game 7, and the cup runner ups last season (Tampa) are already out.

NHL playoffs are crazy.

I wonder if the Lions drafted Gibbs because Howie called them to let them know he would be taking Swift, for free,  whenever Howie felt good and ready and there was nothing they could do about it.

If both Davis and Carter live up to their pre-draft billing and become bookends at DT for the Eagles for the next 8-10 years, I wonder from a roster construction and salary cap standpoint if that would lead to the Eagles cycling through edge rushers every 4 years.

Edge rushers seem to be in more ample supply than elite DT.  For that matter, so are WRs.  It’s an interesting thought exercise to ponder where the Eagles cap money will be spent during the rest of the Hurts era.

What "starter”?  No offense, Matt, but Desai will have his own designs for the Defense and with Wilson moving on, McDonald the only back seven coach remaining and the two starters from last year gone, there isn’t an incumbent at "starter”, unless we count Blankenship, who was a back up (and a rookie himself last year).  The way I look at it, "starter” is an open contest between all the Ss, and frankly, for continuity purposes, the Eagles, unless Edmunds, Evans or Wallace blow things up, may favor Ss signed past this year.  Three Ss are signed for 2024, Brown, Blakenship and McCollum, unless they convert Jobe, Garner or Ringo to S.  I don’t think any player is more than a possible S at S at this point and would not be surprised by a rotation at the start of camp that includes Brown getting reps with the 1s.

I was referring to whatever (two) player(s) start the first game of the regular season at Safety.  With that said I agree with what you have said about the competition that will take place in TC.

On paper, I think this team is about equal with more variance to the downside.

Practically, I think it’s a worse team. We are relying on more question marks, be they rookies, unproven young vets or injury prone players, and some of those question marks will have an answer we don’t like.

The two biggest questions I see are at RB and QB. If Penny and Swift can stay healthy, we’ve massively upgraded the RB position. If not, it’s a massive downgrade. At QB, was this a flash in the pan season by Hurts or something he will build upon? Because if he continues to improve, we might be a better team even though other positions got worse.

Does relying on more question marks (especially rookies) make them a worse team?

QB - last year at this time there were significantly more question marks.

RB - definitely more question marks now, but also a higher ceiling than existed last year at this time

WR - fewer question marks this year than at this time last year. Or more correctly the question marks last year were about WRs 1 and 2 while this year the questions are about WRs 3 and 4

TE is a push

O-Line - definitely more questions this year

Edge/DE - more questions last year.

DT/NT - more questions this year

Stack LBs - more questions this year

CB - many more questions last year

Safety - different questions, but probably a push

Serious answer…

I think the NFL valued Gibbs a lot more than fans.

”Normal” RBs aren’t valued. They don’t go in the first round. But special ones do, and Gibbs is special. His combination of speed, hands and elusiveness is something we haven’t seen in a generation. Kamara and CMC just aren’t as fast or elusive. The last guy who had his tools was Marshall Faulk.

He probably won’t be as good as Faulk, obviously, because Faulk was one of the greatest RBs in the history of the sport. But when you’re projecting his upside and impact, that’s the potential.

I said multiple times I would take him at 30 if he was there but didn’t expect him to be. He went a little earlier than even I thought he would, but in retrospect it makes sense. This draft class didn’t have many playmakers. Gibbs might not be the work horse that Bijan will be, but I think he has the potential to be even more impactful.

I think realistically it does. I loved our draft like the rest of the world, but rookies almost always have growing pains.

I know you are a Wharton guy, so think of rookies as a high vol asset class. You’re going to have some that outperform and some that underperform. The problem is the benchmark is pretty darn high. Hargrave was a 10 sack DT. It’s not very likely Carter can replace that kind of interior pressure as a rookie. CJGJ was an all-pro level player. I think Brown has tremendous potential, but again that is an incredibly high benchmark to clear. Jurgens replacing Isaac might be an upgrade in raw talent but a downgrade in on field play (at least for this season). Etc etc.

If the rookies were replacing mediocre starters I’d say we improved, but they’re not. Most of the guys we lost were pro bowl level and had career years.

Hurts is the X factor along with the RBs. If Hurts makes another step up and Penny/Swift stay healthy, we might have a better offense. Those are the only spots I see a realistic chance to improve.

Albert Breer in a column weeks ago in a blurb about Jalen Carter said one NFL executive told him he wouldn’t be surprised if Howie wound up with Carter because he’s been in a Georgia kick lately and Howie gets obsessed with going back to the same well with schools once he falls in love with them.

I don’t think that executive even knew what Howie was in for this weekend.

Eagles rule the NFC

Just gotta beat Mahomes

Someone sober than me say how

Took a shot at the depth chart as of now. Only Real challenge is the 4th RB position, and its insane that that's the biggest challenge. I would say the Eagles are pretty thin at WR and DE right now. If either Smith or Brown go down for extended time, that would be rough. DE I'm not too worried about since Williams, Street, and Ojomo could also play there.

I think that weird draft of them helped us a lot. Not only because we got Swift cheap but I believe they played a role in Smith falling to 30.

I like your optimism.

I think we need to find a real starting safety most (Budda Baker?) next to Brown then we need a starting LB next to Dean and finally on offense we need a slot receiver.

That said its early may and we got some money. This will get done.

I wouldn’t bank on it. He turned 7 into his brand with his logo and social media as well as whatever sports drink company he owns. Same reason I doubted Gainwell, he built his brand around 14. I’d bet Swift or Nolan Smith is 0 before anyone else.

Didn't realize the brand thing.  Nolan Smith in 0 makes the most sense and was my initial suggestion before the Swift trade.

I think but Robinson and Gibbs going as early as they did helped shape the rest of the draft.  Robison was going to go early but no one was sure.  Gibbs going at 12 put the rest of things in motion.  It helped kick Nolan Smith down.

The WR run in the 20s helped a lot too.

For the first time I can remember, the draft continued to fall exactly how I wanted it to for the Eagles.  What makes this draft even better is the Cowboys didn't draft anyone I really liked outside of Deuce Vaughn but compared to years past that's just fine with me.

The only things I wish the Eagles had addressed were TE with the amount of talent that was available, and drafting Ivan Pace.  Pace was just a draft crush of mine and the fact that he went undrafted surprised me.

The Eagles added blue chip talent in every round.  Even McKee was once touted as a potential 1st rounder.

Cuz I think Swift is here for longer than 1 year a lot of players who don't make any sense wearing 0 are wearing 0.  Calvin Ridley for example is 0.  Braxton Berrios switched to 0.

I think Reddick would look at 0 as a badge of honor.

For Reddick, wearing any single digit is already a badge of honor... check out what Temple does with their jerseys.  And 7 was his college jersey number, meaning he'd already earned the honor and got that number, why should he switch for Swift?   If he wants to offer it, that's his choice, but frankly your logic on this one makes no sense.

I know what Temple does with their uniform numbers, but I'm not saying he should switch it for Swift.  The way I'm looking at it is players wearing 0 SHOULD be the baddest dude on the team.  Reddick fits that bill on this team.  Whoever wears 0 for the Eagles this year, we know is THAT guy.    Being the first player in team history to wear 0 in the NFL, IMO, is like a player wearing 1 in college.  A certain responsibility with being the best to wear it.  Now, that's just how I look at it and in no way does it make it true.  For instance, Zach Pascal is wearing 0 for the Cardinals and he's a JAG.

Hell, I could see any one of Slay, AJ Brown or even DeVonta wanting to wear 0. The problem is, and it's the same for Reddick, is that the NFL has uniform rules where a player can't switch numbers without a years notice unless they buy out the remaining stock of replica jerseys on the market.  That's a hefty bill. Tee Higgins announced he was going to wear 5 this year...but he announced it before last season.

Also, I know that I'm totally going way to in depth with this but it's something I always enjoy trying to figure out.

Reality is 0 will either be Nolan Smith, Sydney Brown or D'Andre Swift.

That's a lot of fuss about who wears what number.
