He’s been the host of the morning show on WIP since so they are making it out to be a big deal but it feels like no one actually cares.

Ray Diddy retiring was a big deal.  Angelo, not so much.

Thank you.  I would ask who he is, but as I remember he was a radio shock jock back in 1989 when I moved away from Philadelphia.

I started listening to WIP when it was Angelo, Tony Bruno, and I think Al Morganti and Joe Conklin were on with them. And mybae a girl Max?  Some of it runs together I stopped listening to WIp when the Dirty 30 booed #5 at the draft.

How do we feel about covey? I thought his returns got better by end of year, and he was extremely sure handed. I don’t think he has the big play potential (like Toney). We could probably upgrade him, but he’s cheap and reliable

He's Reno Mahe 2.0.  Only reason Mahe was our returner was the disastrous 2007 season opener for us against Green Bay.  Catch the ball and fall forward.

Derius Davis of TCU is a UDFA possibility as a PR/WR.

interestingly enough Covey’s 9.3 yard average return as a PR would rank him 16th in the NCAA for the 2022 season.  It appears that the improvements in Punter efficiency and effectiveness has severely impacted Punt Return stats.

Tank Dell of Houston might be a slot WR/PR prospect who would fit both roles needed, although I would welcome the input of @BigEFly being a Houston guy

The real question is what round should the Eagles draft a punter?

far too many variables that far out

In the NCAA Davis ranked third with a 14.9 yard average return.

What does his NFL average have anything to do with the NCAA returners?

@ToastJenkinsThat’s a good description of the problem the team faces, and the final sentence is a good Vision statement.  Next step is to construct a plan and execute that plan.

He showed more flashes as the season went on and had a very good return in the Super Bowl.  I think he can be upgraded but I would have no problem bringing him back.

Okay, let’s make it simple for you.  How do you compare Punt Returners from the AFC to Punt Returners from the NFC?  Typically you compare their stats.

Well, yeah.  But NFL vs College you really can't do that.  Everyone, down to the 52nd man is bigger\stronger\faster than everyone but the elite college players.

Do you have any players you want to add?

Off the top of my head I would add:

Myles Murphy at DE -- not an elite sack guy but a solid all-around DE

Zach Evans at RB -- has good burst and runs through tackles; he could help minimize the hard running Hurts needs to do

Hendon Hooker at QB -- not sure who the Eagles have in mind for a #2 QB; Hooker's age and recent injury could push him down, but love his film if he's there at pick #95

Joey Porter Jr at CB -- #10 might be too high, so a small trade back into the 15-18 range could make him a target

Absolutely correct.  Which makes Covey’s NFL average of 9.3 even better than a 9.3 average in the NCAA.  That means his rank would be even better than 16th.

The moral of the story is that Punt Returners are getting lower and lower average stats and fewer and fewer returns.  However, our expectations for punt returners are still measured against Brian Westbrook and Brian Mitchell.

Brandon Graham on WIP right now.

I'd like to see a #3 receiver who is better and more reliable than Watkins AND who can return punts. Or a RB who can return punts. I don't love having a guy taking a roster spot  who ONLY returns punts.

That sounds like a vision for where you want to be and a plan for getting there.  Thank you for sharing.

Says he believes this was the best team he's ever been on, better than 2017.

Anecdotally, talking with a few groups of friends about the game, all stated that they hated the sneaks and found they affected their enjoyment of the game.

I think most non-Eagles fans will feel similarly

...and yet polls taken show people don't want to outlaw it.  At least the ones I have seen so far.

btw - What exactly didn't they like?  Sneaks have been part of the game for like forever.

Yep. I really don't care about the return stats at all. Fact is Covey does literally nothing else besides return punts. And is average at best at that. I'd take a slightly less PR if they can give Pascal level production on offense.

I added them to the list.  Where would you slot Evans?

Round 1 - first half of the Round

DE/Edge - Miles Murphy - Clemson

DE/Edge - Tyree Wilson - Texas Tech

OT - Broderick Jones - Georgia

Round 1 - second half of the Round

CB - Joey Porter - Penn State

DE/Edge - Lukas Van Ness - Iowa

DE/Edge - Andre Carter - Army

RB - Zach Charbonnet - UCLA

CB - Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson - TCU

RB - Devon Achane - Texas A&M

RB - Zach Evans - Mississippi

Round 3

QB - Henson Hooker -Tennessee

OG - Steve Avila - TCU

LB - Jack Campbell - Iowa

TE - Luke Musgrave - Oregon State

LB - Demarion Overshown - Texas

Round 4

RB - Kenny McIntosh - Georgia

RB - Kendra Miller - TCU

WR/PR - Derius Davis -TCU

Sean Tucker from Syracuse looks very interesting as a RB prospect as well.  Quick feet and very natural pass catcher out of the backfield.

I like Robinson and Gibbs more, but they'll be 1st round picks.  I might slot Evans just above Charbonnet.  You'd likely need to hope Evans is still on the board at #62 overall.
